Those Americans seem to have far more space, usually whole basements the size of the house footprint and their helixes seem to be a minimum of 6ft diameter

That's clever :declare:

I know - so does Jock I'll bet! Hahaha

True. With that much length of running line hidden sidings are almost unnecessary. Trains could just follow each other at intervals.

Hi Neil,

Funny you should say that......John and I tried just that scenario but we ended up in a right pickle. Because the trains are all different lengths some fill a whole storage line and some lines have three trains on them. Well, we had 3 trains on each spiral 'Up' and 'Down' and it was marvellous .............. until someone forget's there is a 'big' train heading for the 'little' storage line or runs into an occupied line (bad signaller!) and that usually happened on the furthest away!

We gave that idea up after a few weeks.

32 yards of track per line in each helix! With your 20' scenic section and the same in the fiddle yard I make that about three and a third scale miles of track in each direction. No wonder it takes four minutes for a train to do a full loop! As Joseph said, you could have trains just following each other round on an automatic block in each direction and watch them go by. Though I'm not sure you'd want them stopping and starting too often on the ascent of a helix! Monumental engineering!

Hi Neil,

Thanks mate. Three and 1/3 miles is that what it is! I'm no mathematician but that looks like about 50mph to me! I'll have to slow them down. Some don't mind restarting and some do struggle to regain their footing, all I need is a Long Drag soundtrack and it would be bliss.

You're probably right there. Your 4 to 5 minutes that you mentioned before does equate to 40 to 50 mph. So you'd probably be better with 5 to 6 minutes giving you 33 to 40 mph as your averages. Though even 33 may be a bit fast for a heavy freight, maybe need to take those to 7 minutes or 28 mph :)

Hi Guys

A bit, well a lot off topic to be honest. I decided it was too cold to bother with the den tonight so I mentioned uploading a few old photos a while back when now I have the chance here are 10 for starters...

These have all somehow managed countless house moves, banged around in cupboards, boxes and an ex-wife yet still managed to survive a scan...of sorts!

Not the best quality I admit, but I was only about 12-16 years of age and piched my dad's Kodak (something or other) camera before getting an Ilford Instamatic for myself.

Please let me know if you like this interlude and I will either keep putting a few in or drop them as I know its off topic, problem is I never sit still.

I know - so does Jock I'll bet! Hahaha

Jock wishes that were so! Currently rattling round in a three bedroom house bought when we still had kids living with us but it has been decided (with my health as her excuse) by SWMBO that downsizing to a bungalow is to happen this summer so my plans remain on paper for now. Thought I might draw up the bothy to scale by counting bricks in a photograph, and maybe make a start on some old Airfix 16Ts for the coaling stage. She has her heart set on this move so that is that, but I'll just have to hope we can find a bungalow with a large man shed!

Kind regards,

Jock.

great set of pics Mike, do you have more/

really good mate.

Hi Andy,

Do I have more! Only about 10,000ish!

I was taking photos from about 1964 when I would sneak out with my Dad's Kodak which I don't even know the name of, I remember the top opened up and you looked down into it as the viewfinder. Trouble was he knew I had used it when the photos got developed, usually resulted in a clip round the ear and a plea for a camera.

I eventually bought one but some deterioration of the results has sadly affected much of especially my colour collection in those early days. The images I posted were just a random selection so will try maybe a 70's followed by an 80's and 90's selection next. I don't have much in this century other than preserved stuff as todays train just don't do it for me.

Morning Jock, Building wagon kits is good therapy according to Jason, and at least you'll see some progress that can be packed away during the move. Likewise small buildings like a Bothy or some general huts would be good to see as well.

Mike, I have no pics from Railways before about 1992 / 3 ish when I purchased a Digital Camera, so any would be good to see. (I guess that's why I like Modern Image). Although I started WATCHING TRAINS from about 1977 I never thought about photographing them until I met George T at Eastleigh one day in about 1991 ish.

Hi Andy

I was never the greatest 'David Bailey' and never had a really decent camera until the late 80's (when I dumped the ex!) I was also strapped for cash throughout that previous period so any savings to be made were taken such as 'Free film' when you took your's back such as 'Trueprint' etc. Problem is the deterioration is very sad to see, in some the negatives have gone yellow! Its odd because I have always cared for them keeping them in a dark place and without dampness etc.

Saying that I do have some absolute belters but they need scanning which is a lengthy business which is why I have started at the beginning like I did wih my Ultimate Allocations listing, they took me 6 years to compile and I expect these photos will the same or even longer!

I'll post some 70's 80's and 90's hopefully before I see you at Stafford.

Hi Mike,

Well, I for one absolutely LOVE those photos, even if they are slightly blurry because they capture the railway when it was still (for me!) interesting!!!

I especially love the Western region shot, pity about the interloper but lovely hydraulics.

Please, no pressure but I'd love to see more, maybe in a dedicated thread like some others have done?

Cheers,

John.

Mike, absolutely love the nostalgia brought to life by the old images - keep them coming as far as I'm concerned! If you do decide to start a new thread, can you make it clear for us - I'd hate to miss anything!

Hope you and all the guys and ladies from RMweb who are lucky enough to be going to Stafford, have a really great time.

Stay safe,

Kind regards,

Jock.

The saving grace for the colour photos might be that you _know_ what colour the engines are supposed to be, so that gives you something to base the colours on.  I have my dads collection of 2 1/4" negatives here, and they suffer the same problem but have no reference colours to go by, as they are of road steam rather than rail.
