i think it was just a plain line relay on the reliefs, the train with 66850 on was being used as a barrier between the sleeper laying road-rail machines and the mainline, not sure of the reason as the worksite is separated from the mainline with barriers anyway

Good your back in the chair Jim!

The blue Vortoc fencing does a good job of forming a physical barrier from a live running line where protecting staff is concerned but they probably used the train as a barrier because of the 360 road rail machines swinging about.

We now have what's known as ALO rules to adhere to (Adjacent line open) and they are pretty strict on what you can and cant do near an open line now, especially so when it comes to on track plant in use.

Without the train there as a barrier, they wouldn't have been able to do the job, its that tight now where the rules are concerned!

Must delve out the Rule changes - sounds as if those for working with machines have been altered back to the situation of the 1972 Rule Book - and long overdue I reckon.

Yeah, its changed a fair bit Mike. There's been a few high profile incidents over the last couple of years that have brought it about. The passenger train at Saltney which struck a piece of rail being moved by a road rail machine being one of them. The ALO rules have only been out for less than 12 months though. Its proving to be a big challenge to keeps things workable IMO.

The odd thing is that the old Rules were tightened following various incidents - back in the 1950s but basically the same, things suspended from cranes hitting passenger trains.  When those Rules began to be loosened some of us predicted that we would, at some time, be back where we had been before but the words 'efficiency' and 'cost saving' were rated more important especially as there had been virtually no serious incidents for years (some people didn't consider why there hadn't been any).  things of course got potentiall far worse once road rail machines arrived.

Oddly it is probably far easier, with modern commcs kit, to put in effective and flexible methods today than it ever was in the past and thus eliminate most of the risk.  (and sorry Jim for nicking your thread).
