Well last night I received a call from the Roster Clerk asking if I could cover the early turn over at Pendeford sidings. So the next morning I climbed into my trusty BL Princess, favored by the likes of Dirk Gently,Terry Scot, James May and my Dad.

I parked my quality car alongside the other cars in the staff parking, the Jocko had been shut down for the night outside the yard masters office.

Not long after I arrived the crew bus from Bescot Depot dropped off two drivers. One for the yard pilot and the other for the Trip loco that had been left at Pendeford, as the driver had run out of hours the previous shift.

Our first task was to collect a Cargowaggon that had been unloaded the previous day in the wharf.

This was then shunted onto No2 road on to some other wagons ready to return to Bescot yard. The next move was 31259 dropped onto rake and it was then time for a quick brake test.

Departure time soon came and it was goodbye to the Tripper

Shortly after the Tripper had departed, 56049 thundered past with the Waterston to Albion tanks

After a mug of tea and a quick read of the paper, the TOPS office shouted that 37251 was en-route with 8 wagons for the yard.

The Power Box rang to let us know the the Tripper was on the approach, so dashing outside I pulled the points over for No1 road known to staff as the Burma Road on account of it's length

whilst chatting in the office we heard a rasping noise, realising what the sound was I dashed outside to grab a picture of a DPU spluttering past with a Salop to Wolves parcels working.

More to follow tomorrow.

Great updates and photos !!

Cheers Gents, it was a touch warm in the train room so my visit was too short. I do like the transition period with blue and triple grey etc rubbing shoulders

What a nice way to run through a set of photos.

The good old Austin Princess eh, a gentle step up from a land crab. I once had the Wolseley version with the 6 pot engine and the little badge on the front grille that lit up!!!

Jinty ;)

Shift down at Pendeford sidings Part 2

Well when I returned to the office after snapping the passing DPU, Kev the "gaffer", reminded me that I had a job to do so stop snapping trains and start shunting them  :nono:  . Another development was that 08759 had been failed with high radiator water temperature, so 08805 had had to be pressed into service.

So after chopping 37251 off the train he drew forward

27145681443_10171f1f2c_b.jpg37251 released by Simon Barnes, on Flickr

A quick flick of the hand points and 08805 complete with the shunters Gin palace pulled forward

27756578215_498a5ca438_b.jpg08805 at the ready by Simon Barnes, on Flickr

Signalling to the driver he eased up and I then squeezed my bulk (too many gutbusters, I blame Mr Hickman) between the brakevan and the OBA wagon

Popping into the office I got on the blower to the Power Box and asked for a long shunt

Pulling the hand points for No 5 road, the Jocko set back to detach two German registered Ferry tanks for the Tripper.

With the two tankers detached the driver drew the shunt back out of the yard, ready to set back onto the Down Goods. The next wagon to be knocked off was a PAA Grainflow wagon, destined for the wharf.

Repeating the whole story and we now have two VGA wagons on No5 road, keeping the Foreigners company .

27144383094_19de31d348_b.jpgtanks and VGAs by Simon Barnes, on Flickr

Whilst all of the above had been taking place, the Saltley driver on 37251 had slowly crept along the Burma road, stopping just short of the points. 08805 had also attached the,  two loaded OBA wagons loaded with Compressors on the rake of wagons for the wharf.

With the consist for the wharf complete it was time to propel along the Down Goods and into Pendeford wharf No1 road.

Back up in Pendeford sidings, the Trip engine has vacated the Burma Road and set back into No5 road ready to form Target 43.

Next time, Date with a Tripper (I said Tripper not Stripper)

Cheers Vulcan, the yard may look big but as with all model layouts, you wish you had more space to play with  :paint: . I'll create another update over the coming week.

Like those compressors, where did you get them?

They come from Holman Bros works on the Roskear Branch at Camborne and are often seen travelling 'up country' by train.

Sorry, I slipped into the reality of the thread! In model terms they also come from Camborne though, but from Kernow Model Rail Centre http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/p/51303/44-500Y-Bachmann-Scenecraft-Holmans-Compressor-Twin-Pack

Hi Simon.

Apologies. Yet another superb layout I've managed to miss. I have really enjoyed looking through your thread. This just oozes that Black Country 80's atmosphere. Sadly now, mostly gone apart from Bescot and Wolverhampton Steel.

A nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Great work. I shall now be following along with interest.

Cheers

Marcus

Welcome Marcus and thanks for taking a look through my thread. I've followed your enviable progress on Peakdale wood and echo your comments on the decline of freight in the Black Country, Bescot is like my second home having worked there twice.

Thanks

Simon

As promised, I said I'd share my trip out on Target 34. First Pendeford sidings has had a new addition to the road fleet.

Right i trudged across to No 5 road and climbed up into the warm, welcoming cab of 37251 (allocated to Tinsleys Speedlink FGWB pool). Once I was onboard the driver gave her some revs and moved off.

The Powerbox routed us along the Up and Down goods, as always the Tripper was bottom of the priority list, requiring a lengthy wait for traffic on the Main.

After watching the world go by and sharing a cuppa with the driver we got the road.

28159832196_c46f6c33e8_b.jpgcrossing over by Simon Barnes, on Flickr

Our first job was to detach the two Ferry tanks off at Ellis Chemical works. Once clear of the points we waited for the Shunt frame to set the road and give us the dummy

Once we got the dummy the driver set back

28115937811_849e63ccf0_b.jpgEllis chemical works by Simon Barnes, on Flickr

One at a stand, I dived in-between and chopped the two tankers off, once clear and hand brakes applied, I gave the driver the tip for him to draw forward

28193877885_49eb49870f_b.jpgdetach and draw by Simon Barnes, on Flickr

My next task was to detach and secure the two VGA vans whilst we ran round the train ready to push back through the single slip opposite Hickmans Glass works shunt frame

As before we had to wait for a slot

Once 47003 0Z98 had passed the points went over, the dummy came off and the driver opened the throttle

Routed back onto the Up and Down goods we changed ends and waited

When we got the road we approached the VGA vans and coupled up

then propelled them past the shunt frame ready to draw them back through the slip

Once through the slip, the shunt frame threw No 5 points over, pulled the dummy off and it was time to set back into the warehouse road.

After the vans were detached and secured, we were to run L/E back to Bescot as 0Z98

Thanks for looking and I hoped you enjoyed this photo heavy post. Over the coming weekend Mr Wiles is paying a visit and bringing along his sound fitted Rapido APT

Fantastic photo's Simon and love the story line.

Off to Bescot myself in the morning at the ungodly hour of 4am. Unfortunately, unlike the driver of 37251, I don't have the luxury of a secondman to make me a brew.

Cheers

Marcus

Give my regards to Bescot Marcus, if you see a short fellow dressed in NR gear then that will be my mate Rich "Stumpy" Hickman
