Just imported this beast as I've always loved the styling :   a 1972 Gaz -24 'Volga'

favoured wheels of the KGB , officials and apparatchik etc -  this ones an original black car so would have been for 'offical' use rather than being on sale to the genral public (i guess you should read that as 'proletariat')

Its presence, quirkiness , and er , 'build quality' has won me over  - its 90% original , including the paint so they must have some something right back in the day when they built these things. Its been converted to LPG but other than that is stock and drives like an old volvo on steroids.

Nice, reminds me more than a little of a Vauxhall PC Cresta.

Had to click the 'like' button Jon but not the 'agree' one! Your holy grail is spot on, but the last time I saw a Miura in the flesh (about two years ago at the NEC) I was actually rooted to the spot for several minutes, I was standing right in front of it with my shin brushing against the front bumper (not that it's much of a bumper in reality) and I couldn't stop myself from absorbing the sheer bloody glamour of the thing, the fact that it exists at all is something to be savoured, admired and celebrated. I would happily take any one of your chosen three though given half a chance - for me the Mangusta pips the Pantera to the post in the desirability stakes, I find it much more satisfying visually from all angles and the drama of the split rear engine lids is equal to the scissor doors of the Lambo Countach.

There's currently a lot of activity on Pistonheads in the various Italian car based threads, the enthusiasm is palpable when someone posts photos and news of a new purchase of an old Italian classic, no matter what it is, from a humble Fiat to an exotic Iso, and long may it continue.

at primary school my favourite toy car was a  Miura

How's this for a bit of period contrast - the Lancia Stratos prototype in the Bertone factory car park back in 1971, with the staff's Fiats in the background....

Is this the most outrageous rally car ever!

This was fun also........we had one with only the passenger cell (no clamshell front and rear) used for suspension development which always caused a stir tickling through the workshop......:diablo_mini:

I agree, there have been other ‘outrageous ‘ rally cars like the Metro 6R4 (think thar what it was called) but I think the Stratos doesn’t look like a rally car and was so different from what went before. I’ve a resin slot car of it to paint when I get round to it.

The correct answer to that question is a resounding yes.....!

A couple more pics of it taken the same day, plus a few of it on the Bertone stand at the '71 Geneva Motor Show (the LP500 Countach prototype was also on the same stand that weekend).... I love the simplicity of the prototype Stratos and the utter bonkersness of the rally versions.... I wouldn't say no to a factory built Lister Bell replica in road going 'Stradale' guise, not cheap even at around a tenth of the price of a real one ....!

I didn't realise that the stratos went back as far as 71.

Always thought ford missed a trick by not making a genuine road version of the RS200

Lovely looking car

No way could Ford afford to do that, they would have cost enough to price themselves way out of the market, we lost money (a lot) on every converted road going RS200 we sold Each one was hand (re) built by Tickford for the road.

Yep the banning of that rally class cost a fortune.

But we did have fun with the competitor vehicles we had in for evaluation for the program.....Stratos, Quattro, Intergrale etc........and without the impetuous the Sierra Cosworth May never have been born, heady days. :good_mini:

We had the Chequered Flag Lancia Stratos as a course car on the Arkell Rally one year. As Clerk of the Course I got to ride in the passenger seat. Scary didn't come into it . Nothing in front of you and trees going past at a ridiculous rate. The guy driving it managed to spin it on a very fast corner on a disused airfield. We didn't hit anything but the windows were open, there was a lot of cow sh*t on the runway and the car ended up full of it!

It was a very busy time for Bertone, Marcello Gandini's Stratos Zero concept car appeared the year before, as did his pre-production Lamborghini Urraco and of course he was fine tuning the Countach which (at the time) nobody expected to become a genuine production car. The Bertone factory was busy building bodies for the production Stratos, the first Urracos, the Series 2 Lamborghini Espada, the Fiat Dino Coupes and the 105 Series Alfa Giulia and Montreal Coupes amongst several other cars.

After the Geneva show in March '71 the white Stratos Prototype was repainted in orangey red which it still carries today....

Love the strotos but other thing is just weird

The craziest thing about that original Stratos concept, was that you entered it by stepping in through the windscreen.
