People do find it difficult to do even approximate price comparisons in their heads, especially when units are not equivalent...

Oh well....

Time for another CRACKER JOKE!!!

Q: Who is Rudolphs favourite pop star?

A: Beyon-sleigh!

Highlight, etc...

As I pointed out earlier wine was sold in pints and half pints. Just not in bottles. Most wine sold in pubs came in casks and later in plastic gallon containers. It was only when wine bars started to spring up everywhere that bottled wine became a thing.

Don't people remember wine on draft (usually Liebfraumilch)?

BTW the government don't do surveys. YouGov is nothing whatsoever to do with the government. It's a company that conducts surveys for advertisers and lobbying groups and should be treated with caution.

So for 98% of people reacting one way or another to a survey means that a lot of people have filled in that survey after being directed to it by a Facebook or Twitter campaign.

Dave Gorman did an episode on YouGov. Worth a watch as it shows how pointless they are.

Maybe not surveys, but they do do consultations

here’s the one I mentioned

and a screenshot from it showing the 98.7% happy to keep metric measure

nothing to do with yougov.

That feels like reading more in to it than is reasonable. The largest number is for the status quo, and there's a lot of imperial in that (propose chanigng all road signs to kilometres and see how far that gets you, even among those odd people who insist on measuring their height in metres). All it really says is that people don't like change, a sentiment I can usually get fully behind.

4 mm to the foot, there is a good compromise for the metric v imperial debate.

Apparently the Navy uses kiloyards, which seems to be a compromise designed to annoy everyone!

In Ireland 20th January 2005 all speed limit signs were changed to km/h overnight.

They still drive like the clappers.

And also the Nautical Mile which is 2.02537 kiloyards 😀

There is a story, possibly (probably?) apocryphal about the use of a early computer to calculate range (in miles) and height of trajectory (in feet) for US army heavy guns. Having done this, and seen how appreciative the Army was of the information, the group thought that the US Navy might find the information useful as well, so sent them a copy of their results.

This was returned with a note saying that, since the Navy calculated in nautical miles, the information as presented was useless and would remain so unless ranges could be calculated in nautical miles. The computing group did send a new set of information with ranges in nautical miles - and maximum heights of trajectory in negative fathoms!

An ancient Greek walks into his tailor's shop with a pair of torn pants.

"Euripedes?" says the tailor.

"Yes, Eumenides" replies the man.

I like Greek jokes!

Here is two more;

Why did a lot of people get parking tickets when Persephone was taken to the Underworld? Demeter wasn't functioning.

Did you hear about the war between Greece and Turkey? The Turks were lobbing hand grenades; the Greeks were pulling the pins and throwing them back.
