RR have landed @ rails

Oh dear...

The blue band above the windows is too deep on both the TSO and BSO:

The FO looks ok though:

Let's hope - but I'm not holding my breath - that the main range ones will be correct.

Two steps forward, one step back. The passenger compartment windows are the right shape and the tumblehome looks to be there but what is going on with the "rectangular" Vestibule windows? The corners are too sharp (see the Airfix model.....).  Although they have modelled the shallower version of these windows, the top of the window should be in line with the tops of the other windows.  Looks like they have modelled it with the bottom of the vestibule window in line with the other windows.  Looks very odd.

Sadly they do look very disappointing and downright odd. The thickness of that blue band really does make a big difference to the appearance of these coaches in this livery. I spent some time trying to get my resprays right and even redid some of them because that band wasn't right.

I'm not even sure whether I did get them exactly right in the end, but I do know that they look a lot closer to the real thing than Hornby's effort. If I can make what I think is a reasonable fist at it, why can't Hornby? Unless the full spec version is much better, I will be saving my money for the Bachmann Mk 2fs or even just keeping my old lazerglaze-fitted Airfix/Dapol Mk 2ds.

Unfortunately, although the yellow cantrail stripe is much finer on the FO, the bottom of the grey panel is too high up the body and doesn't match the TSO or BSO. Also the TSO has white gangway doors (should be fawn) plus the inside of the gangway and half the face plate is white which is pure fiction unless someone knows different. The TSO & BSO gangways appear to be completely unpainted.

I still remain unconvinced about the window position and the wheel size.

I guess we have to remember that these are the RailRoad range models. I'm as frustrated as the next person, but i think we should wait until we get the full fat versions before we jump in at the deep end............if those are still awful and at an increased price, then fair enough....

cheers

Who is the Railroad Range aimed at?  If it's for kids that don't care whether their stuff is accurate, why bother tooling a new coach when they could have continued with the old Airfix range.  I'll be keeping on to my Lima mark 2f's for now as I don't think the upgrade is worth it.

Not that i kept up with the thread on the Hornby 'design clever' debate, but I would imagine that they have produced the Mk2E on the back of modellers repeated requests.

With that in mind, Hornby ( employing the design clever philosophy ) have produced the main Mk2E bodyshell, which differs from a 2D in the toilet window department etc etc. So that they can maximise their profits, they have released the RR first - which you correctly identify as being aimed at kids and for those that are not overly fussed by minute detail.

For the modeller who is concerned with detail and it being 'right', then the main range versions ( which are priced about seven quid dearer than the RR versions ) should have fittings on them that are aimed at the more discerning modeller. What these extra fittings etc will be is open to conjecture and as per my previous post, we should wait for these to arrive for a critical and fair appraisal.

cheers

Looking at the images on the Hornby website the main range version is identical to the Railroad one but with metal wheels and interior lighting. Given the small difference in price between the two versions I shouldn't expect any more than that.

I think it's also fair to mention those who have gone to great lengths to create masterpieces with the Hornby 2D or Lima 2Fs are probably never going to see their models overtaken by new RTR stock, railroad or otherwise, due to the time and effort gone in to get every detail right. Unless of course they start again with the new models as a base, and start correcting all the errors (minor or major) in the same way as they did to the older stock. I think what modellers have achieved with 80s tooled models is stunning, from Mick's yellow stuff to those who have modelled blue-grey or intercity era.

To my untrained eye the shape of the new ones look great, but then again I'd be looking at them from a respraying perspective.

In my modest opinion The blue band below the roof line doesn't look too far out, however the lower edge of the white/grey band is clearly too low. Looking at photos of the prototype the white/grey band stopped midway up the door handles, the Hornby representation is almost level with the bottom of the door handles. This gives the appearance of the windows being too high up the coach sides.

I suppose there was some variation in the positioning of the white/grey band between different coaches, depending upon who and when they were repainted. I recall from my youth a large variation in the depth of the yellow and blue bands below the roofline.

From a distance, I don't think the thickness of the blue band itself is all that important. IMO what makes or breaks the appearance of these coaches in this livery are the relative thicknesses of the grey band above and below the windows. That's what marks these coaches out as being so wrong.

I'm just hoping that the full spec versions will be correct, otherwise these coaches will be a non-event as far as I'm concerned. I don't see why the grey-blue banding should be any different on the full models, but I hope I'm wrong.

Looking at the Rails images there appears to be a very visable solebar - poor assembly or poor design? What with the livery, window and possibly solebar issues I will be passing on these and waiting to see how the Bachmann 2f pans out. Much modified Airfix/Mainline/Dapol 2d's will remain in service with me for quite a while yet.

Further to the items already noted (which I'm in general agreement on), is it my imagination or is there no tinted glazing on these 'railroad' versions.

Despite being advertised as such.

a-la the R4216C (re-release) Mk2d Blue Grey TSO.

Think Hornby will need to do a product re-call and send them back to the Chinese factory for retification works.

Very much looking forward to the 'Rail Express' review.

The windows look tinted in the pictures on the Kernow website.
