Dave F's photos - ongoing - more added each day

I was once told that the secret of good Steam Photography was to try and capture the Rod at the bottom, or at least the lower half. Looks like its a 3/5 and 2 cant be judged, so your a winner.👍.

The line to Hawes closed in 1959. I wondered, if this is a demolition train, as suggested, is that another loco at the other end of the train?

We could be looking at the back of the tender, the two white patches could be Overhead Line warning plates.

Possibly another loco, or it could be the 'departmental coach' as seen in Dave's follow-up photo J325. The white 'patches' look to be in the same position.

Good evening, David. That is a great set of photo’s of Morpeth. The first one of 37099, on an up light engine movement, on the 16th June, 1984, is a well captured portrait shot of the locomotive. There is also a kind of mark along part of the bodyside. Not sure what it would be from.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

And 37099 is still going strong by the look of it. Saw it today parked up in the old DMU depot (upper triangle sidings) at Reading with a Network Rail test train.

Good evening, David. That is a most impressive set of photo’s of Grantham from the late forties and early fifties. All are real gems. In JVol6113, with B1, 61405, on an express passenger train from Grantham to Lincoln, in April, 1952, you can see it is one of the B1’s with the GNR style of smokebox door which always made those engines look so different to the others.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Interesting that, in C18237 and C18239, the Class 91s are both missing the same nose hatch covers. They weren't removed for a period of time (like the Class 442s) were they? I don't remember that occurring - but then I was no longer living on the ECML by that time and only used to see them periodically.

Grantham in black and white for this afternoon.  The photos are from the early 1950s - I was about 1 year old when Dad took the first photo!

David

Thank you very much for these photos.

Took me right back to my train spotting trips to Grantham from Nottingham and brought back a lot of memories.  That was around 10 years after these pictures and it was not a lot different.

Good afternoon, David. That’s an excellent set of photo’s of Damdykes from near to Cramlington on the ECML in Northumberland. In C18205, with ‘Skipper’ 142016, on a Morpeth to Newcastle service on the 29th December, 1992, the Skipper makes a contrast to the surrounding frosty landscape in the low December sun.

With warmest regards,

Good evening, David. What a delightful and atmospheric set of photo’s of Bludenz, which is in the extreme west of Austria, close to the borders with Switzerland and Liechtenstein on the 1st August, 1992.  In C17245, with Montafonerbahn, BD4ES, 10 207, on a Montafon to Bludenz service, you can see how well designed the electric units were. And in C17246, with 2060 060, that is a low and compact looking shunter.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Great photos. Brings back memories of holidays in Austria in the 1990s.

Hope you don't mind me pointing out a typo. The shunter is a 2067 not a 2060. Here is the smaller 2060 shunter at Zell am Zee.

Thanks very much - I have corrected it.  I should have noticed I had it wrong as you can read the number on the image!

J1573 could be a Cravens Class 105. It is definitely not a BRCW Class 104.

I'm sure Market65 will confirm the identity though.

Another of my typos, of course it is a Class 105 or Cravens unit.

Good evening, David, and what a delightful selection of random photo’s. In C2176 at Levington, the class 101, on a Felixstowe to Ipswich service, in July, 1975, is actually a hybrid unit. A class 101 DMBS leads the Cravens class 105 DTCL.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of older photo’s from various locations. In J7963, at Peascliffe tunnel, with 37053, on an up train of sand wagons in June, 1983, it is a well composed photo’ and it also shows a blue haze around the portal of the tunnel.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Good evening, David. That is a most excellent selection of photo’s from the Bala Lake Railway and the Welshpool and LLanfair Railway. In C4663, at Llanuwchllyn, with Hunslet, Holy War, on the 4th August, 1979, you have captured a great side portrait of the engine.

The photo’s of Trent, on the Midland Railway, from the early fifties, are fascinating and, as always with the black and white photo’s, each one a gem. The last one, of 4F, 44420, on an up mineral train, is yet another train that will never be seen again.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Nice, David, but that 2-6-4T is a Fairburn one.

Many thanks

I took it from Dad's notes without checking, so am blaming him for once!
