35A
A little bit of research suggests that the Class 47 in C974 might well be 1988 (the 198 is clearly visible). D1986-89 were transferred to Gateshead for four months at the start of the summer timetable in 1972. All were still green - however, whilst the others retained 'D' prefixes and numbering in the original font, 1988 was numbered in the newer Rail Alphabet style font, without 'D' prefix. The closest Brush 4 in C0973 looks to be 1865. 1

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 12, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2023 Good afternoon, David. Firstly, I’m on my iPhone and all is normal wth this site, so whether it is fixed or not I won’t know for sure until the evening when I try it out on my iPad. Now onto those excellent photo’s of the Highland Railway to Thurso. In J3298, at Borrobol Platform, with a class 26, probably 5335, in green with blue doors, crossing Strath na Frithe, in August, 1973, your Dad has captured a most atmospheric view of the train on that bridge. The replacement photo’s of Stratford from March, 1979, are an excellent set, and show the railway with some quite grimey trains to be seen. A good example is that first photo’ of 306058, on a down passenger service, going away from the camera, revealing a truly grotty looking cab end, especially around those cables and sockets. The photo’s of Ulgham Lane crossing, on the ECML in Northumberland, are a superb set, and the first photo’ of a two car class 101 DMU, on a Newcastle to Alnmouth service, on the 22nd September, 1984, shows the unit to be apparently accerating since exhaust is visible against the gloomy, cloudy sky. With warmest regards, Rob.

Apparently they went to Snailwell to be broken up. In the same photo the Class 37 is actually an 08! BernardTPM
Wasn't that at Snailwell scrap? I seem to remember they used to incinerate them in an enclosed vessel as part of the asbestos removal process. I saw a lot of withdrawn Mk.1 Pullmans at Ely too around that kind of time. A plastic sheet was placed on top, then it, too, was filled in. The idea was that it would be possible to reinstate a rail connection, should anyone wish to do so. Sadly, they forgot to retain either of the main-line connections. The station now serves as a cruise ship terminal. 1 3 1
Chris Turnbull
A fine selection fron Bury and Ely, David. As a Bury boy I remember the station well, albeit in the 50s and 60s. By '83 I had moved away although my parents still lived there. Ely: I drove under that bridge this morning on my way into town for an eye test! Great photos, thank you. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted January 13, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 13, 2023 Good evening, David. That’s a superb set of photo’s of Bury St Edmunds and Ely. In C6034, at Bury St Edmunds, in May, 1983, a former Gresley BT, four compartments, can be seen as a Mess and Tool Van. I’m not sure what has happened to that carriage, but it will be a shame if it was subsequently scrapped. That’s an excellent set of photo’s of Dover Marine from 1975 and 1977. The last photo’ of some class 411’s, in the station, on the 27th December, 1977, is very expertly composed and captures well the interior of the station. The black and white photo’s of Nottingham Midland station from the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, are truly superb, with the first one of 0F, 41532, running light engine, in circa 1948, is an excellent portrait shot of the engine. RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 14, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2023 The twin peaks photos are a bit hard to play "spot the difference" as one is from No.1 end and the other (don't know which) is at No.2 end. Where as the last two photos "spot the difference competition" is easy - the first one has a blue van in it! Kev. 1
