Good evening, David. Thank you for posting those excellent photo’s of Buston Barns on the ECML in Northumberland. I’m very late myself tonight, at 01.40 a.m., I’m just late to bed. 😉
The last photo’, of the Permaquip HCT 024, from February, 1993, shows a fascinating piece of machinery, and I don’t recall seeing too many photo’s of one.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

J555. There is also a 25 trying to hide in the bushes on the Up side, but not quite managing it.

I was just looking at thar Ian. I'm trying to work out where it's stood as the line to Sunbeck junction would have gone by that time

Same here! It must be a siding at Pilmoor cottages on the up side?

It's a long time ago but I think there was a siding there then.

I wonder what that was for? No sign of it today and quite difficult to pick out both ends of the former triangle

Those 16tonners, in C3774, look in remarkably good condition for 1978!

I wonder if the ones without the top doors had recently been rebodied

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent set of photo’s of Pilmoor. The first one, of 37, D6780, on a down goods train, in July, 1966, has, apart from the 25 on the siding next to the cottages, some possibly interesting loads in some of the wagons further back in the train. The 37 is in a quite grubby condition which is how I remember them from the mid to late Sixties.

The photo’s from around Shireoaks, in April, 1978, are a superb selection, with the first one of two class 20s running westbound, light engine and brake van, a most excellent capture. Some rustiness can be seen around the driver’s windscreen.

The Cramlington photo’s from the Eighties show plenty of interest, with J8189, of a class 254 HST, on an up express, in October, 1984, being a beautifully composed shot of the train as it passes under the NER footbridge.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Excellent pictures pictures again David.  I appears from the last picture that headcodes were still been used on the GE mainline much later than the rest of the network.  Am I right in thinking even 315s had them when new

I think 315s had a space on the top left of the left hand window but I left Essex just as they were being introduced and never photographed them.

Ceratinly the GER seems to use headc odes later than anywhere else (at least north of the Thames).

Good evening, David. That’s a delightful set of replacement photo’s of Church Lane crossing, on the Great Eastern, just north east of Ingatestone. In C2472, from October, 1975, you have captured a superb view of the crossing, and gates. Then in C3363, with an unidentified class 37, on an up train of vans, in July, 1977, that’s a superb shot of the 37 nearly head on.

The London King’s Cross photo’s, as taken by your Dad, in May, 1978, are an excellent selection, with J6043, of 55007, Pinza, departing on a down express showing the typical blue haze of the exhaust. A most atmospheric shot.

The ECML in Northumberland photo’s at Shilbottle Junction, and just to the north at Wooden Gates level crossing, are showing excellent scenes of express trains on the ECML at those two locations. In C19526, at Wooden Gates, with an unidentified class 43, leading an up HST on the 16th July, 1994, you have the scene of a dramatic sky and a most yellow looking field sandwiching the train. A beautiful composition.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

C4596 look at all of those units stabled, I take it this was off-peak!

I don't know the station at all but presumably the 'car park' area used to be a goods yard?

I believe it was the goods yard but I only moved to Essex in 1974 and rarely visited Southend so I thinik I only went to Victoria once or twice.

David

The yard was for the coal merchants deliveries of which Charringtons was one, note their office by the weighbridge. The very same office from which I collected "one of coal, one of coke", on my go-cart! (Our coal man had recently retired). I did find in the weeds, the old BR enamel, "SPEED LIMIT IN YARD 4 MILES PER HOUR", which hung on my wall for a few years and is now at Mangapps, I believe.
