Good evening, David., and I wish you a very Happy New Year. I hope it will be peaceful and prosperous for you.

That’s a great selection of replacement photo’s of Portsmouth Harbour, with the first photo’ of PS, Sandown, on a  Ryde to Portsmouth sailing, from August, 1964, and HMS Dolphin, the submarine base in the background, being a most atmospheric view, and such an excellent portrait shot of PS, Sandown.

The replacement photo’s of the Harwich branch from the 1970’s are a superb set, with C3198, at Parkeston Quay, with a class 105, which is a hybrid set with a class 100, DTCL, leading the class 105 DMBS, on a Harwich to Manningtree service, going away, in February, 1977, being a typical example of an ER hybrid unit. The last photo’, again at Harwich, with a class 31 and brake van, in October, 1975, being a superb portrait shot of the 31, complete with the ‘OXO’, headcode. The number, on enlarging the photo’ appears to be perhaps 31195, but I’m probably wrong.

The black and white photo’s from around Trent, in the early 1950’s are all displaying as they should - you have solved that issue. They are a great selection, and each one is a true gem. JVol2036, of 4F, 44420, on a down goods, in c1954, is such a good example a goods train from around the Trent area. I’ve seen plenty of photo’s of just such trains of varied wagons.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. Happy New Year. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the Severn Valley Railway from the Seventies. In C1543, at Bridgnorth, with class 5, 45110, and GWR, 0-6-0PT, on the 6th April, 1974, you have captured a scene which was once commonplace on the British railway network. It can only be seen on the preserved lines now, of course.

The photo’s of the Grassington branch are truly superb and recapture the scene of rust, muck and grass. Just how it was near to the end of steam on BR. In J288, with some wagons in the yard, in August, 1965, that’s a great shot of your Mum by your Dad. And in J290, with class 4mt, 75039, in August, 1965, the engine looks quite imposing from the very low ground level shot, and is remarkably clean too.
The latest Morpeth photo’s, from 1980 and 1986, show plenty of interest, with C7370, of a breakdown train coach, on the 9th April, 1986, the carriage is, of course, a converted Mkl BS. It can be seen that most of the internal bulkheads had been removed as part of the conversion.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Hi Rob,

There will be some Beamish ones soon as I work through replacing the missing ones.

In the meantime have you looked at my Beamish photos on flickr - not just railways though.  They are at:

Not only that, but it appears to have a 963xxx number, making it a former freightliner brake van, on which there’s threads

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of replacement photo’s of Beamish from the 9th April, 2015, with DSC_5730, of a Blackpool Tram, number 31, at Beamish Town, a most excellent three quarter portrait shot.

The replacement photo’s of Reading, from a wet day in February, 1978, are a superb selection, and show how the everyday railway was at that station in 1978. C3658, with 47476, on pilot duties with vans, looks quite restful in between shunting work, complete with rain streaks.
The lucky dip photo’s are a delightful set, with C4912, at Tenterden, on the Kent and East Sussex Railway, on the 26th December, 1979, of Terrier, Sutton, & GWR railcar number 20, being an atmospheric head on shot of the Terrier.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

I particularly enjoyed the early SVR preservation photos David, I find that era really interesting perhaps as it was in my 'formative years' of enthusiasm.

I look forward to hopefully to some early KWVR and NYMR shots!

They should be coming quite soon, all being well.

Good evening, David. That’s a fascinating set of photo’s of the Midland from around around Lenton, to the west of Nottingham Midland station. It’s a place which I think most people would pass through rather than visit. In the first photo’, of Lenton West junction, with a three car class 105 unit on a Derby to Nottingham service, in May, 1969, you can see that it has a class 104 TCL in place of the recently withdrawn class 105 TCL.

The replacement photo’s of Prestonpans, from the 21st August, 1986, are an excellent selection, with the first photo’ of a three car class 101, 101324, on a North Berwick to Edinburgh service revealing three different cantrail gutters. The leading car has a full length gutter, the TSL has them only over the doors as originally introduced by Metropolitan Cammell, and the rear car, as far as I can see, has none. I stand to be corrected on that.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

The three coal trains are interesting. David Monk-Steel records* that many of the wagons fitted with "top skips" or canopies worked mainly in Scotland. But it is odd that there are two rakes with the first six wagons without them, then one with, then two(?) without and the rest with. I wonder why? Or could it have been the same rake doing a second trip?

Looking at the image numbers it could be the same rake of wagons with a different loco, as there was a time gap between the photos - I'd taken 15 photos between them.

C7911 was taken at 11.55, C7926 was taken at 14.57.

Between them I'd been to take photos at Millerhill of the yard and TMD.
