So, we left off with me making some doors.....and continue with me making some doors:

Here's the twin pairs of doors trial fitted in place

post-6675-0-32979600-1313266733_thumb.jpg

I then decided that the brickwork over the small door shouldn't be there and cut it out.

post-6675-0-34391100-1313266741_thumb.jpg

Then there was some pondering about the pair with the curved top. Unlike the twin pairs, which we almost flush with the front face of the brickwork, the curved doors were set back. I also decided it would be fun to have one of these doors ajar. The doors were first made as a solid set and the open door cut out.

Some refreshment...

A trial fit

Detailing - hinges etc

And then a further trial fit

And after priming

The observant will note that a few extra details were added to the brickwork and the various brick joins and corners were tidied up at this stage. A further coat of red oxide primer was quickly squirted over, plus some grey on the roof.

And now on to the painting proper. I've been using acrylics for a while now for buildings I prefer them to the old Humbrol oils as they dry much quicker (shorter time between coats) and are water based (easy to thin, mix and clean brushes). The supply I have came from a war gaming shop in Birmingham and I chose a variety of cream, grey, tan, brown, colours.

Now this is where folk ask 'what's your method'.....errr, well, my method is to try random colours and methods (spot painting and washes) until it looks about right. This 'method' does make repeating the finished effect on other buildings a bit interesting and that task was made more complicated by the fact the new building joined the old one.

I always had in mind that I'd have to apply some extra colours to the existing building to get the whole lot to match and therefore the windows and doors were never fixed in!

A few more washes were added after the last photos were taken, the stonework lintels etc picked out and the woodwork / guttering painted SR coach green.

Lots of random colours were applied to the corrugated roof until I found the ones I'd used on the other half...

The doors were fixed in place with Mek and the windows just placed in - I'm considering glazing, so no glue yet, and over 200 hours of modelling later we have....some buildings that sit at the back of a deep board!

And if you flip it, it doesn't look too unlike the original building in St Blazey (albeit shortened!)

Still not sure about doing the replacement roof panels - think they'd draw too much attention to the back of the layout. Still have to add the lead flashing between the roofs and the building/gable.....

Hi Chris,

Great work on the building and good see a detailed step-by-step photo sequence showing how you have built it. The doors look spot-on and very individual. Doing the individual door planks does seem to the best way to achieve the finish and look of the doors. Scribing the doors can be problematic as you mention, unless the other side of the door is also scribed. Not so easy on the curved-topped doors though! Nice work on the hinges and tie-rods through the brick work, which really bring the whole building together.

I also like to use the Warhammer paints for buildings / scenic items as they are so easy to use and drying quickly also allows you to see whether the colours look right. One of the problems with any paints is that they tend to dry a slightly different shade to when they are wet and nothing more frustrating than to paint with enamels, only to find when the paint is dry, you end up with a different colour / shade that you wanted!

Right then, the final sort-out for Truro begins.

post-8734-0-42567600-1313225283_thumb.jpg

Job's for today include;

- Make a set of legs for the fiddle yard

- Wiring mods (some of the wiring is 'commoned' on copper clad stips (I ran out of time and material for it's first show), it's now getting tidied up and being soldered to better quality tag strips)

- Check the flipping thing works

- Do an audit on all the bits required

- Tidy the stock boxes

- Nip down the Great Northern for a quick sniff

So,

Jobs completed; I've made the fiddle yard legs, done the wiring mods, checked it works, re-painted/weathered the roundhouse roof and went to the Great Northern for a couple.

Should I have audited the bits and tidied the stock boxes instead of the visit to the Great Northern? Probably - but it was on the list.

Chris - You have made a fabulous job of that building. I'm seriously impressed. And yes the GWR St Blazey box would look great on the end of the layout.

Geoff - I'm well-pleased with how those wagons are turning out. There's a down side to making such a good job of it tho. You know you're bound to get asked to do other stuff - there's a full Royal Mail TPO rake in need of assembly.....

Treggyman - Your photo's of BZ would of great interest to us. If you wouldn't mind posting a few it would be most appreciated.

And yes, I'm cheeky, I Know....

Hi

Well I found a few pics of rolling stock but none yet of buildings...figured out how to scan them...

Next job is to see if I can download them.... well here goes post-7844-0-80326000-1313352123_thumb.jpg post-7844-0-11067000-1313352188_thumb.jpg

Hopefully you can read the captions..bear in mind they were written nearly 20 years ago when I knew very little about the Cornish Clay Industry & the associated rail traffic,

I hope they are of use..If not ignore.I'll keep looking...Oh for a digital camera then.

Look forward to seeing you at the weekend....I'ts a very enjoyable show.Iwas there last year with Deviock Dock.

Cheers Bill

Mr M Magnet

Glad you liked the step by step on the building - there's probably other ways of doing it but those methods mostly work for me. I'm pleased with the colouring of the building but fingers crossed it looks ok under the layout lights.

Geoffers

Stilllooking very nice, still wondering how you solder white metal to resin.....

D

Signal box would be good - not sure when for though - this last building took a long period of doing bu99er all before it was finished!

This may seem a stupid question (and I'm currently bamboozzled by the new format, so bear with me).

Are those buildings joined together now permanently? if so how?

The reason I'm asking is that when I'm building units in a "Terrace" (for wont of a better word) however square to itself I make it it is always annoyingly off to the next by a tiny but discernable degree. Another reason why I build in a foundation for the fudge factor.

Best, Pete.

Thats a great job you have done Chris, with the painting and weathering of the building. Hopefully the signal box won't be delayed too long.

Pete

The original 2 sections are permenantly glued togther but not the third (yet) for the very reason you mention. The buildings cross a board joint and i'm not sure yet how they will sit. There is a slight socket of 3mm as they sit behind some paving. There will also be some grasses and crud around the base at some stage. The way the boards sit on beams that span trestles should also mean the boards and joint are much flatter than piggy back boards.

See, not a daft question!

thanks for the kind comments Colin. I need to see the layout up again before getting my head around the signal box. I know roughly where it goes but that's about all. I may do a card mock up for truro so we can have a good look and think about it!

Funnily enough I'm visiting my parents in Par this weekend and it would be rude not to make the effort to pop down to Truro.

Looking forward to seeing DITD in the flesh :)
