    Ask Dave

Would you consider doing some track plant, I believe this is a very poorly covered area which all other manufactures do not think of interest and it is about time we got some decent OO gauge plant models
  2. Having worked in the timber trade for many years I tend to prefer to use local timber and builders merchants instead of the big DIY chains, you get better quality, more choice, useful advice and decent prices, some also do deliveries aswell. Another point is if you use a merchant you cut out the middleman as they tend to souce materials direct.
  3. Hi rob D2, heres a few of my soft skins mainly kit built for a possible future militaty depot, barracks or TA base on a future layout. I may also use some as wagon loads. The models that Airfix aquired from JB models were very nice , however they have taken the Bedford MK and Labdrover 101s out of production which is very unfortunate as they would be great for loading on trains. Revel make the kits for the M.A.N truck in 4, 6 and 8 wheel versions. I plan on making an 8 wheeler military recovery truck soon.
  4. On the wagon side you could try "British railway modelling book no.3 Modern wagons in 4mm scale, making the best of ready to run models, by Nigel Burkin" Nigel Burkin has done several books about modelling modern image wagons and locos and on converting them to EM gauge, so keep looking out for them. There is also the series of books by David Larkin "Working wagons volumes 1 - 4 and Civil engineers wagons volume 1-3 " hope these are of some use,
  5. Gascoigne wood was a coal blending point as well as loading point which ment it had an unloading point (1 road) as well as the rapid load loading point (4 roads if I remember correctly). It also had a cripple siding, run round road and twin track service line along one side between the loaders and the coal concentration site. There was regularly a class 08 shunter around, however it was the train loco which worked the loader/unloader.
  6. Looking good, what livery will you be finishing it in.
  7. Lets hope Arriva are better at running the trains then running the buses. I spent an hour on thursday night waiting for a bus heading for Leeds, 2 buses on the Huddersfield run passed while I was waiting (same service, opposite direction). I eventualy caught a bus to Heckmondwike to use a different route only to find once I got there the next service I wanted was also suffering disruption and delays. Arriva have spent alot of money this year on brand new buses and upgrading buses on major routes, yet they regularly suffer delays. They could have spent some of the money sorting out a way to improve the service provided. Maybe keeping a couple of spare buses at mid route points to take up slack caused by heavy traffic or roadworks.
  8. Every livery is pretty, to the person who designed it !
  9. Very nice just when I thought it was safe to put my wallet back in my pocket, only hope they make a large enough production run, I only managed to get 1 Network rail falcon wagon.( at a decent price)
  10. I can see a future project for one of the 66s as its a non powered model. I'll model it with a body section removed and fit a cornerstone kit EMD powerunit, then it can be shunted around a depot layout.
  11. Oh dear I feel an early 1970s third rail layout coming on. I'm going to have to rejoin a club.
  12. If they are doing the pair of power units they are already breaking from just the NRM stock as only 41001 still exists after the other power car was cut up. Thus why not do the mkllls as well.
  13. The class 31s usually operated local provincial services like the S&C out of Leeds but rarely if ever on the penines.
  14. Problem is the fact they are spares, quite often you don't know you need it until the original part breaks,so you can't stockpile all the spares for your full stock roster as you wouldn't have space
  15. Probably best to use a two part epoxy type glue as they tend to give good strong results when fixing metal and resin/plastic. As for any kit you get out of it what ever you want, if you want basic just build and go, if you want detailed then you can go to town and spend time and many hours studying pics and adding as much detail as you want.
  16. What period are you modelling as the main hall originally housed 2 turntables and the stores and workshop area were not open to the public, also are you modelling both buildings on each side of the road ?
  17. Got mine last week, the extending trailer is identical to the standard oxford model ( I ve got one of each now). I recently picked up an oxford leaflet showing forthcoming releases, one thing shown on it is a Komatsu 360 excavater with a standard size arm, I would believe this will be based on the same base unit as the long arm stobart machine. I am thinking of getting another long arm machine to convert into a demolition machine with a set of jaws instead of the bucket.
  18. You could have tried sand blasting, may have still had 3 dimensions instead of just 2 dimensions. It reminds me of a miss hap that occured when I was working in a builders merchant hardware company, we recieved an order for 15 litres of a certain strong paint stripper ( comes in green cans and starts with N ). We packaged up 3, 5 litre cans and put them on the parcel carriers truck. The rear door was then closed, however it did NOT lock and whilst the carrier was driving along a busy main road the rear door opened and out came the paint stripper. Unfortunatley the car following had just left the new car showroom and it hit the 3 cans full on and covered the bonnet, windscreen and roof leaving the car needing a full respray and several replacement windows, OOPS! Thats good paint stripper .
  19. Several years ago whilst working for a local concrete fabrication company I was required to take several concrete moulds to a yard about half a mile from ours for shotblasting. I had to move one mould at a time ratchet strapped onto the forks of a JCB Loadall. I had a flashing amber light on the cab and used my mirrors and indicators however on entering the yard I was taking the moulds to I had to swing out right in order to get into the gateway on the left. I had moved five moulds without a problem, however when moving the sixth I had a learner driver following me, as I came to the gateway I started indicating left and started to swing out at which point the learner decided to pass. Im not sure just how close we came but I needed 5 mins to stop shaking. 2 mins patience wouldn't have hurt and what sort of driving instructer would put there pupil in that of danger
  20. Whilst having a day out last year around west yorkshire I noticed the oil terminal at Greetland nr Halifax is still pretty much in tact and decided to take another ride past to try and get a photo to put into my prototype info file. having problems uploading a photo will try later
  21. When talking of niche markets the APT-E does still exist all be it as a museum piece but its still seen by many people everyday and as the S stock is still relatively new these have many years service and many thousands of people will see them there must be a reasonable market for them. The real niche markets must be the long lost diesel and electric prototypes which only lasted a few years and where only seen by a limited number of people yet several have now appeared in mainstream manufacturers catalogues as a standard release, so why shouldn't we see more tube stock next or even some DLR driverless units. NICE MOVE Bachmann LETS SEE MORE PLEASE.
  22. As reguarding the prototype and where it can be seen, with the way rolling stock is moved and engineering firms compete for work you could use this as a reason to model one of these units just about anywhere on the national rail network. As for the model it looks fantastic however an unpowered version would be useful for modelling being dragged from or to a depot or works. It would also be good as a start of a new line for underground stock. Maybe there will be some collecters club barrier wagons appearing in due course. Me thinks I am going to have to start saving my pennies as I can always find a place for one.
  23. Has it retained the original name as it appears to be carrying cast name plates, as well as the cast numbers. To be hoped if Hornby have ago at this they use the correct body moulding, buffers are easy just use class 92 buffers.
  24. It could be an optical illusion caused by the roof profile and lack of headcode box. Are the wipers the same size on both locos, if so then the windscreens are more or less the same size.
  25. Maybe its time to start lobbying the goverment to look at why the costs are so high in this country, if you look around our towns and cities we have hundreds if not thousands of empty industrial units which just fall into disrepair. This country was once the place to get anything manufactured, its about time we started working at getting back to making things and not just shipping everything in.
