  1. I don't think that that is Huddersfield. I've just done a fly over on Google Earth, and the locks aren't that close together, and there isn't housing that close to the canal. I'd also heard the tale of them being tested in the canal basin at Huddersfield, but I wouldn't have thought it was that deep, deep enough to fully submerge, but not much more. Adrian
  2. It was last year (270 ?), my last renewal was on the last edition that 12 months was an option. Adrian
  3. They don't say, but the implication (from the conversation at the time) is the UK. Adrian
  4. I have friends in Canada who occasionally refer to it as a colony. Adrian
  5. Oh dear. Years back during a discussion on why major government IT projects fail, it was suggested that it was because too many politicians didn't have any idea on what was practical to do in terms of IT projects, whereas they could see that the idea of building a bridge from Northumberland to Denmark was clearly impractical. Does that analogy now fail ? Adrian
  6. Oh the irony, I just got "cloudflared" whilst reading this subject. Adrian
  7. I think I've seen it twice, but it is one of those layouts that I'd be happy to see several more times. Adrian
  8. What about This place Ideally located for those pretty panniers (which we know never offend) Adrian
  9. I've not been past recently, but the cemetery at Whitby used to have a sign saying "Dead Slow". I was never sure how fast the living could go. Adrian
  10. What is the gadget on the bow for, some form of anti mine device ? Adrian
  11. I think it got pressed back into service for foot traffic when the road bridge was badly damaged by the floods a few years back. Adrian
  12. I think that the sections have since been scrapped as they were found to be unsuitable. Adrian
  13. The canal has been under restoration for a number of years, so it made sense to put the aqueducts in at build time, rather than cause disruption later. For the same reason, there is a bridge over the course of the Thames and Severn Canal where the A417 crosses it between Latton and Cricklade. Adrian
  14. The caption on page 10 states that it is nine arches, deliberately missing an arch to prevent the model from being too dominant. Adrian
  15. Coastal shipping is (was) much cheaper than rail for bulk cargoes (assuming that they are non-perishable). I saw a picture not long ago (I forget where) of a ship registered in Goole discharging (so probably Yorkshire or East Midlands) coal at Kingswear. Not just Kingswear, Poole used to have a coal discharging facility on the town quay, with a conveyor system linking it to the gas works. Adrian
  16. And a very good article it was too. Adrian
  17. An enjoyable 150 minutes, but a pity that some of the titles that they put up on the screen were difficult to read. Adrian
  18. Looking very nice. One extra thing that you might consider adding are racing pigeon lofts. Adrian
  19. I'd be interested in the two West Midlands volumes, if they are still available. Thanks Adrian
  20. The video may have been from the Great Dorset Steam Fair. They've been featuring WW1 during its centenary years. Adrian
  21. Apologies for the thread hijack. A lovely bit of work there. Something that caught my eye towards the end was the working Scotch Derrick. Do you have any details on that ? Thanks Adrian
  22. The compass should look at bit like this. That one was off a Humber Barge, but is the right sort of thing.
  23. This thread in "Small Suppliers" section may help to explain. Adrian
