  1. Local legend had it that on one occasion the royal train over nighted on the Ledston branch in the countryside between Garforth and Kippax. That end of the route was lifted by ~1970. Adrian
  2. Not a comment on the blog post as such, but I've been enjoying your choices in music. Adrian
  3. Your guess is as good as mine, but I'm sure that it will be worth waiting for. Adrian
  4. Serious racing yachts aren't lined or insulated (or even painted internally), it all adds weight, and as such slows the boat down. Adrian
  5. I have seen it said that OS (and other map makers) make minor deliberate mistakes on their maps, if they are copied, it helps to establish that there has been a copyright breach. Adrian
  6. I think I saw one in Gloucestershire a few weeks back. Adrian
  7. My outside camera spotted one snuffling around at about 0545 earlier in the week. Rare to see one in daylight. Adrian
  8. I'm using three of them on a regular basis. They work, but they aren't brilliant. Ping times are typically 10-100 times slower than across normal Ethernet. Adrian
  9. Very nice, I was half expecting one of the foot plate crew to stick their head out of the window. Adrian
  10. Please to report that the post man has just made his way up the drive to the manor house, and my subscription copy has been delivered. It will now be undergoing social isolation for the next 24 hours, after which a good read is anticipated. Adrian
  11. I don't think Branson has anything to do with it any more (other than perhaps getting a fee for using the name). Clydesdale Bank group (Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks) are, for reasons best know to themselves, intending to rebrand themselves as Virgin Money later in the year. Adrian
  12. Have you tried the National Library of Scotland http://maps.nls.uk/ ? Adrian
  13. Delius was born in Yorkshire, although his parents were German. Adrian
  14. I remember listening to Desert Island Discs some time back in the mid 90s, and the guest of the week (a female author whose name I forget) picked the Elgar Cello Concerto. She explained that she had been working somewhere, and heard it being played, upon investigating, it was Du Pre rehearsing. I once read that Mstislav Rostropovich refused to play it because he didn't think he could better that performance. The Tallis Fantasia. Invariably put the hairs up on the back of my neck. If you get the chance to hear in Gloucester Cathedral, then take it, it sounds so much better. When it was premièred (it was a commission for the event), it was a filler on the programme, the main event (so to speak) was supposed to be the Dream of Gerontious. The music critic from the Times recognised it as being some special, and is said to have described it as so very new and so very old. Ivor Gurney and Herbert Howells (also locals) were in the audience, and supposedly spent the entire night walking the streets of Gloucester discussing it. Do that write tunes like that any more ? Adrian
  15. I say, steady on old chap. Adrian
  16. Hopefully this will work. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2020/03/31/alex-cartoons-april-2020/alex-cartoon-april-151/ Adrian
  17. Indian red. Grey seems rather indistinctive for such a vehicle. Adrian
  18. The Canals of North West England (Charles Hadfield and Gordon Biddle, pub David & Charles), which is generally viewed as authoritative on such matters has it as opening in 1845 and as being disused C1960. Adrian
  19. Reminds me of a discussion in a works canteen queue many years ago. Apparently someone a few places ahead of me in the queue had a pasty with custard. It all ends up in the same place. Adrian
  20. Wow. A very nice piece of work. Adrian
  21. My guess was correct. But it was based on the geographical description rather than the social one. To be fair to the residents of Micklefield (Micky as it was known locally), I never had any dealings with them, but father and grandfather did, and I don't remember hearing any adverse comments. One anecdote that sticks was of a group of miners at Peckfield colliery (which was at Micklefield, not Peckfield !) clubbed together and bought a Rolls-Royce hearse for their commute. Adrian
  22. It is (was) common around here to see the local postmen sharing a van, but they both worked their rounds alone, so they were just sharing the van to get to the area that they delivered in. Not sure who it was (plain van), but last week I saw a van pull up outside a neighbours, and it had two people in it, and the items were small. Adrian
