  1. The top diagram with only the single resistor will blow the LEDs as you have full track voltage across them with no resistor Andi
  2. Before crowbars were invented crows had to drink at home Andi
  3. The AT supply I use has very fast short-circuit protection built in, it takes a few attempts to get it to start when the layout is first connected while it tries to charge all the capacitors running the point machines. Andi
  4. The most difficult part of DCC fitting a Hornby 86 is isolating one of the motor brushes from the motor frame. Other than that it's a very easy job. Andi
  5. I have the PSU in a separate box under the layout, I use the +12, -12 and +5 supplies (My layouts have significant TTL type electronics that like a nice stable 5v supply) and the 0volt rail. The two 12v supplies are used for point control as I find the 24v differential between them is bombproof for twin solenoids. Other items (mostly LEDs) use either the +12 or +5 to 0v supplies dependant on the brightness I want. I have no need to the 3.5v outputs so ignore them. Andi
  6. I've used AT power supplies very successfully on both my larger layouts, but the AT only requires a power switch. I know at ATX supply has a different start mechanism but other than that there is no reason why it shouldn't be useful Andi
  7. Mine only has a single decoder in the NDM, it only ever runs with one end leading so the headlights are permanently on in that car, and tail lights permanently on the rear. It does have additional pick ups on the second NDM and a pacer coupling between the two for power. Andi
  8. The only reason my APT-E hasn't run yet is that the layout hasn't been set up since the RICOH outing where my 14 car Hornby set was in action Andi
  9. Being as I've got a DC Kits 303 under construction I would expect a manufacturer to announce a 303 as mine gets to the paint shops! Andi
  10. I've got a Rapido APT-E but it's very buried in its box and inaccessible at the moment. I've never had cause to open it up and it's never yet been put on rails. Can anyone elaborate on how the Rapido tilt system works please? Andi
  11. Probably because @Crosland knows what he is talking about. Removing the components will NEVER make operation worse, leaving them there can in some circumstances.
  12. Bridge building for Catspaw

  13. I would imagine it will be done much like my own NDM with a centrally motored chassis driving all four axles (ex Heljan in my case) and the pan mounted on the chassis so that it stays both vertical and in line with the car, while the body is able to roll/tilt around the central chassis. I can't see any other way of making a central motored vehicle with tilt. Andi
  14. To say I am happy with today's announcement would be a huge understatement. Now Ravensclyffe will be getting another 14 car APT to go with the one I built from old Hornby sets. Made my year so far! Andi
  15. Are your frogs switched or powered by a frog juicer type device? Andi
  16. What about slow speed fitted locos for MGR type work? Andi
  17. The cupboard that spontaneously produces locos has struck again, class 81 with Heljan chassis. Seems I have two of them now :)
