I see it even more now, but the light cluster on the 506s always made think someone looked at a die, scaled it up and stuck some light bulbs in. BernardTPM
Very like (though not quite identical to) the 1938 LT tube stock too.

Just missing the rounded cab roof. I think if the 506 design had that incorporated it would look far nicer - sleeker and less functional.
BernardTPM
I was thinking mostly about the marker/code lights really. The rebuilt Shenfield stock (Cl. 306) had their pantograph ends raised up to normal roof level when the pantograph was moved to the middle car, but the upward estension was always visible, all the more so once the ends were painted yellow.

RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted May 25, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 25, 2022 (edited) Mum's funeral took place this morning, so I thought I'd write a short bit about her with a few photos by her and of her as she has featured in this thread from time to time. She was born in Loughborough in 1924, gained a scholarship to the local girl's high school and was at University during the war, gaining a degree in Maths and Zoology. She then worked as a steam turbine designer at Brush Engineering in Loughborough for a time. Later she trained as a teacher, got marrried, I came along. When Dad became Headmaster of a boarding school she took on the role of Bursar and "Headmasters wife". When Dad's health gave problems and he left teaching in1968 Mum started to teach Maths in a comprehensive school. In 1969 she became a Head of Year and in 1971 was appointed Deputy Head of a comprehensive school with around 1800 students. She was a member of her Union's executive committee and was on the Governing Council of an Examination Board. Her hobbies included photography, needlework, lacemaking, amateur dramatics, sailing and driving traction engines, steamrollers and small railway locomotives. She also enjoyed driving. First some photos of her. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted May 25, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 25, 2022 Good evening, David. That’s a lovely tribute to your Mum. What a remarkable lady she was. That is a most delightful photo’ of your Mum at the wheel of the Jaguar MklX at Pye Bridge in 1964. Please do post more of her railway photo’s when you can. With warmest regards, Rob. 2
Pyewipe Jct
As others have already said - that was a lovely tribute to a remarkable lady. The pain of loss is always there, but what wonderful memories of both your mum and dad you must have. Best wishes, Kevin 1
RMweb Premium keefer Posted May 26, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2022 I knew your mum was a very talented, special lady from previous posts but just how so, I would never have guessed! From zoology to maths and needlework to traction engines with a bit of turbine design and teaching in the mix, I don't think there was much your mum couldn't do if she put her mind to it. An amazing life well lived, especially in an era where the gender roles were usually so strictly defined. 3 6
RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted May 26, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2022 Thanks for sharing, David. The Warship hauled train in P880 looks like the penultimate coach is maroon, but that would be unusual as the Waterloo-Exeter stock was SR allocated and so if not Blue/Grey would have been green.

RMweb Premium keefer Posted May 26, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 26, 2022 I suspect that the view in C1807 will be completely unrecognisable today, with the CTRL in its tube and the redevelopment of the former Goods Yard/'railway lands'. Less railway infrastructure but funnily enough, probably more railway traffic than ever with Overground and freight services 1

RMweb Gold Market65 Posted May 26, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 26, 2022 Good evening, David. That’s a most excellent selection of photo’s of the ECML from south of Newark. In J2529, at Little Bytham, with a view of an arch of the viaduct, from March, 1971, it’s a very well composed framing of what lies beyond the archway with two Austin 1100’s and a building.
