3D Printed N Gauge Pendolino and On Track Plant

Recommended Posts

After many coats of paint, we have a yellow train!

Decals and glazing tomorrow. This is going to be a very impressive train - the YXAs will come in sets of 3, and the second set of the TRT will have the actual lifting and replacing wagons too.

I am wondering if I might spray my kirow in network rail yellow? I have a thing for yellow and its my train set........

A couple of Kirows and a track laying train will look awesome in a yard with my NMT :-)

What is the usual formation of the track renewal train? I assume the second wagon is the track storage wagon so for longer lengths of rail would there be more? If so are you going to sell them separately

Well at long last I've completed the final set of models to be released before the N Gauge Show. I now have 14 different designs, available at 9 products (some come as sets).

I had considered the Kirow to be my triumph so far, but having just finished the Track Renewal Train, I think this is actually the most impressive design. It won't be cheap - the set of four wagons will cost £150, and each set of three YXAs will be around £65 each.

On the YXAs, the sleeper loads are removable, and the cranes from the TRT can be placed on these wagons as well, as show in the photo below. The little gap runner also works, it turns from an upright into a bar that crosses the gap between wagons, allowing (on the prototype) the cranes to run along the whole train.

The only things I've added to these models that aren't part of the print are the white metal railings on the crew vehicle. These are, once again, designed purely from photographs, so they will not be completely accurate, but are the best I could do without measurements.

Here is a video showing the full length of the TRT, and then some snaps of each finished wagon.

I thought I would sooner or later have to build another stock box but at the rate these 3D prints are coming I can see me needing a stock box just for all of the Network Rail vehicles.

As soon as I have cleared the projects underway then I will be ordering  these as they are superb.

Thanks guys!

As to how long it takes to do these - i've not timed myself, but its actually quite fast. The TRT probably took about 30 hours of CAD work, plus 3 or 4 for painting and detailing once it arrived.

The Kirow must have taken at least double that, and its still not 100% finished!

Where next David? At the speed you've conquered urban layouts and now kits, rtr? ;)

Really top work, I love the fact the Kirow has all the articulation. As to anyone who complains they aren't exact just smile and say they'll do the job until your model comes out ;)

They look right to me and do exactly what they were designed for.

Thanks Paul,

After the N Gauge Show launch in September the 3D printing will probably take a back seat for a while, as hopefully I will be starting my degree (interview is Tuesday). If so, I think I will probably be putting the next layout (hunters lane) on hold until funds allow. I may have to consider selling Cross Street to pay for the construction, it will cost about £700 I estimate, and while I can afford that on my current sallary, if on a student budget...well, the mortgage has to come first!

In the meantime however, there is one final bit of 3D printing to do - though this will again have to be spread over many months due to budget, but there is of course one vehicle missing from the TRT - DR78821 - the coal face of the train so to speak.

This is the eye-poppingly complicated triple articulated section that does the actual track lifting and sleeper replacing. At present my thinking is to alter the position of the bogies somewhat and make this 3 separate wagons, or else they may prove a nightmare on anything other than the most generous curves.

Here is a taster of what is to come - photos from Wild Bour Fell's excellent photo stream.

Thank goodness you are going to slow down, my wallet is going to struggle to keep up!

BTW I do hope you make something out of the selling of the prints, while its a bit contradictory to what I just said I don't think anybody would say your time shouldn't be compensated

I've started work on the second set of wagons for the TRT, and need a bit of help. Is anyone familiar with the actual workings of this train? If so, I need advice on what exactly is inside the 'box' at the right hand end of this photo.

My limited knowledge of the TRT is that this is a transfer point - the cranes that have collected sleepers from the YXA wagons drop them here, where the longer crane picks them up and runs them onto the next wagon and onto a conveyor belt system that delivers them to the working end of the train.

What I can't work out is what this box is. It seems to have sleepers in it in some photos, and there are some guards underneath it above the track.

If I were to look inside this box, what is in it? Is it open to the track below?

Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.

The second part of this triple articulated wagon is now complete, and I've started work on the third and most hideously complex part. This is the real coal face part of the TRT, and is going to be a fascinating wagon to design. The basic shapes have been blocked out below, but there is a lot of work to be done on this...maybe when its a bit cooler!

I think the box you are referring to is for the dunnage- the wooden battens that sit between new layers of sleepers. You can just make them out sat where the rail will be sitting once the sleepers are in place. The gantry automatically picks them up once the new sleepers are on the conveyor and drops them into there when its into position on this wagon,
