These models are only available from Locomotion Models (the model shop in the Locomotion Museum in Shildon) themselves - they were produced to pre-order only. However, Locomotion have intimated that they may have some left over after pre-orders have been fulfilled. It might be worth dropping them a call before the rush of models arrive. Their phone number is 01904 685785 and their website is http://www.locomotionmodels.com/

[Edit: Darn, Andy got there before me!]

Er... excuse me if I butt in on an argument but does anyone have any photos of the finished model and can someone please tell me where I could buy one from, as in going there, looking at it and handing over folding money? I presume these aren't something that will be stocked by any old model shop?

As for photos, there's a rather good set in a certain modelling magazine that supports this forum: https://www.world-of-railways.co.uk/brm/store/back-issues/british-railway-modelling/british-railway-modelling-july-2018

HI,

Here is a photo of the model on Thorne Yard at the Perth show over the weekend.

We have to say a massive thanks to Locomotion models for allowing us to have the use of the model over the weekend.

The digital edition of BRM is now live - https://pocketmags.com/british-railway-modelling-magazine - we do go big on the Stirling Single but it really is a rather special model. Well done to Rapido Bill for making it work so well!

I've just picked up the print copy and there is one error. The prices quoted are the balance prices and don't take into account the £50 deposit.

Do we know if these have left China yet?

With the holiday season coming up and the post office keeping things to one side for 2 weeks before sending them back, I don't fancy the NRM posting it, it being sent back (because failed to collect it for 2 weeks) and then resent again....

Sure the odds of it arriving on the 1st day of someones holiday is slim, maybe 1 in 10, but that will be a few hundred parcels pinging back and forth! And I'm always a huge victim of Murphy's law.

 Thanks.

So 14th June, if via ship, will take until 14th July at least. About one week to reach me.... Hmmmm there is a 1 in 10 chance Murphy's law will apply.

Now if I ask for it be delayed, there is a 1 in 5 chance it will be lost/forgotten about.

I'm dooomed.....

No problemo - if you have spent the money on one of these - you won't be able to afford a holiday anyway...!  :sarcastichand:

I paid fully when it was announced and did not go on holiday that year. Had I known that it would have arrived a few years when I was about to go on holiday, I would have done the opposite.

All the best laid plans... and Murphy's strikes again!

Except the Rapido Twitter posting on June 14th said they left a couple of weeks previously, so say around June 1st...

Nobody called anybody non - modellers or box openers as you put it, where on earth you picked that up from is anyone's guess  :rtfm:

The point you seem to have missed is that undeniably the Average Modeller, the box openers as you call them, are the people who keep the hobby going. Without the box openers there would be no Peco, Hornby or Bachmann and probably none of the wide circulation magazines or exhibitions.

Really!

That depends on whether you see Bachmann and the other manufacturers as the core of the hobby. Or whether you see modellers as the core and the RTR manufacturers as just another part of the supply industry.

Perhaps it may also be worth considering whether those that went before, improving what was available through creating kits, accessories, "customising parts", etc. didn't have some influence on motivating the RTR manufacturers to produce better models, so that all you have to do is open a box.

As us older members can remember there have been a number of RTR manufacturers over the years. Many have ceased trading or been bought out. It is difficult to know how the manufacturers decide on level of detail and thus price level; there is obviously some level of competition but this can only go so far or prices will be so high that they will not sell.

The subject of this thread is at the top end, and of a very specialist prototype. I doubt the market could support too many like this, many of which will go in display cases and might just as well have been un-powered.

The writing is on the wall for Chinese factory pricing, when production moves to another third world country the prices may drop, but so may the quality.

This may end up being cyclic. RTR may go back 30 years and encourage a new market for conversion kits and bits......

It would be interesting to speculate what would happen if Hornby and/or Bachmann ceased production.

I am fascinated that Peco has managed to survive, and seemingly thrive on it's mostly made in the UK range of kits, RTR stock and track. Years ago it dabbled with a RTR N gauge loco (Black Five I think) but did not follow up, I wonder why?

They did a Jub about forty years ago, which was of very high quality for the time and which IIRC was made for them by a continental firm. About a decade ago they had another crack at the RTR N market with a Collett Goods, which seems to have sunk without trace.

Why is this argument between kitbuilders/scratchbuilders, RTR buyers and those who do both even a thing? The whole thing feels like a school playground where everyone has split into cliques (the cool kids, the nerdy kids, the tough kids, etc...).

Is it so bloody hard to just get on with hobby, let everyone else get on with hobby, stop attacking/criticising others and stop feeling the need to have to defend your way of doing the hobby? ARE WE NOT JUST MEANT TO BE HAVING FUN????

...

- Alex

But but but how else are certain individuals supposed to feel superior on the internet?

Erm. Read your post back. If that's not trying to provoke an argument then I don't know what is.

In the absence of RTR this forum would not be here and the kit building ranting pedants would be all alone on a tiny forum far far away.

Considering the forum was started by modellers then how can that be true?

How about looking at other "model Railway" forums and tell me which one has the knowledgeable members. There are at least half a dozen. Maybe you would like one of those better?

Out of interest, I’ll be handling mine with kid gloves once I get it here, because I can’t afford a second one, but is anyone looking at one of these with a view to taking a knife to it?
