Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Variations on a theme, more prototypes for my underframe

I've not received my levers etch back from PPD yet (not sure if its stuck in a post backlog..) so I haven't done much in the meantime as my workbench is full of unfinished wagons.. I have tried fitting the underframe to a couple of different wagons though just to see how it goes and add some variety to my fleet.   First is a LNER 6-plank merchandise wagon based on the ABS kit for a 9ft wb unfitted example. A bit of filing back of the white metal solebars and once soldered together the underfra

What to do for a loco shed?

So the retaining walls around the loco depot are taking shape. As i said previously I bought, but haven't finished, a Scalescenes loco shed and I don't think this is going to look good enough even if I do get it finished. The Bachmann shed is too big to fit so as far as I can see I'm left with just a few options (1) use the old Hornby kit seen here with a coat of paint, replacing the floor and adding some dirt (2) the Peco shed which will just about fit (3) no shed at all. Actually best of all I

14xx episode 7 - turning tyres pt2

Lots of pictures here, they make more sense than my ramblings, so I will just stick to a few comments for each one, I must stress this is not the perfect/best way of tackling this job, but it works for me with the tools I have. For those who are interested I used to have a Myford ML7 with DROs and I really miss them, they are especially useful for this sort of job. If you have any questions fire away. The essential measuring tools, I have two 2-3 inch micrometers to save adjusting them for di

Curved baseboards

Been working on the turnback at the south end today, drawing it up full-size and trying to get the right compromise between minimum radius and space used. I tested lots of my argumentative rolling stock and found that pretty much everything would go around an 800mm curve [just under 32in]. I've made this the inside radius and designed these boards to be three tracks wide - the actual width of the board is 165mm with 50mm track centres. These will not be scenic boards and removable when not runni

The whys and wherefores

This new blog format has deluded me into thinking that people may be interested in the reasons behind what I do, the inspirations and how it all started, really. They probably aren't, but I'm going to do it anyway   It really started with the introduction of the Hornby Class 50, back in 2003. I'd had a model railway before, but sold up in 1993/1994 to start modelling US prototypes due to the superior models available. That too soon fell by the wayside once girls, cars and beer were disco

Precursor tank

Weskie's Workbench: LRM Precursor chassis   by Weskie   original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? posted on Sat Nov 01, 2008 7:19 pm   For my latest project now that the dark evenings are here, I am building a new chassis for a LNWR Precursor tank. The chassis kit is the new updated version that Jol Wilkinson has designed for the London Road Precursor tank kit, replacing the previous Brassmasters (I think) one. I built the loco about 5 years ago and ne

Keyhaven - the facade

The low relief buildings at the back of Keyhaven also serve to conceal a hidden storage road, one of which I've never been particularly happy with as it was a hasty gap filler at the time of the layout challenge. So, the 75% of the building in the centre is now a landfill contribution.? ?    ? ?    I'd picked up a couple of Ten Commandments stone-cast low-relief buildings to hack about.? ?      And re-assembled as below, PVA giving a good bond between the sections.     The buildin

Fiddle yard wiring and track work now complete

Having concentrated on the scenic side of things for quite a while. I finally remembered that I really should get round to completing the track and wiring on the second fiddle yard as for some reason the trains just don't go without power. Not like the real thing at all hmm! So having a couple of hours free today I finally added the last section of track - less than 30mm on the southbound fiddle yard and then wired up the whole thing. At some point I now need to test it out. The next job when

Horse-drawn parcels van and coal trolley

Here are a couple of horse-drawn vehicles for "The bay".     This GWR parcels van is based on No. 131, representing a type introduced in the 1890s. It was made using a Langley kit.         The lettering is based on photos from the period (including the use of different fonts), and drawn up in Word with a brown background to match the van colour. It was then printed on thin paper and stuck to the van side. This shot is ruthless but from a norma

16T mineral

Back in my thread on the old RMWeb, some of you might remember I was working on a repannelled 16T mineral wagon. It's now 99% finished and just needs some couplings and a bit of final weathering to finish it off.   Here's some quick photos:

Finishing Ring Road - OHLE details

With N Brass' range of OHLE droppers still unavailable, I've decided to make my own so that I can (finally) complete the layout. I've only done two of the seven gantries so far, but already its made a vast difference to the model - it now definately feels like part of the WCML! They've not been painted yet, waiting until they're all on then touching them up in one go.   David

Thoughts about presentation

Hello, Progress has been slow, a bit like the pace of life in general this week, but I thought i'd talk to you about latest happenings on the F&CR... The narrow gauge trench has finally been dug out using an electric drill and chisel meaning the narrow gauge track has been cut to length. The NG bridge is also being installed and i'm hoping I can get the NG track laid down today. I don't have any fishplates for the NG track though unless I can find some in the house (as you do!).   Toda

What happened to time?

It flew, that's what happened! For various reasons, I have been unable to do much work on Mawgan Porth since September. I have been diverted into using my modelling time to build two control panels for the club O-16.5 layout "Theobald's yard", which will be at the Orpington and District MR Exhibition on 9th & 10th January. The group decided to build a circular extension to enable more and longer trains to operate. A blog on this construction and preparation is imminent.   The control panel

Mawgan Porth - O gauge BR(S) North Cornwall   by paulr1949   original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? posted on Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:31 pm   Well for what it's worth, here is some information on my current layout. Comments welcome (nice ones preferably!!)   Up until recently, my interest had always been in 4mm scale 00. Like many people, I had a layout which never seemed to get very far - all the track was done, the wiring was done, but not much else

My Layout

My Layout   by Weskie   original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? posted on Sun Dec 30, 2007 10:11 pm   Hi All   Well after years of not finishing a layout, or even getting anywhere near to finishing. I thought i'd give it another go!! So i resurected a couple of baseboards from a previous project. In true 'Blue Peter fashion' here's one i made earlier! (6mm ply, double thickness at ends, and cross braced.)     Then after a couple of hours play

37114, Large Logo blue livery

Now I don??™t normally delve into the past when doing my modelling, but when i was asked to do this one I couldn??™t resist! Hopefully the first of many. I used this photo photo for inspiration!   Here are the pictures of my model:     The roof really is light grey ??“ somewhere under there! I scratched the roof paint by accident, but decided to leave it on to represent a brush with a tree somewhere on the way to Kyle!!

4mm/00 Falcon Brass ROD, building the tender.

Well I'm starting to panic as the Hull show is now less than a week and I still have to finish the loco chassis plus a few other details as well as painting...:icon_eek:   I woke this morning to find that the roofing felt has two serious leaks that have allowed water to come down through the floor and on to the bathroom ceiling on the second floor so I have been up trying to stem the leaks before the roofer arrived to sort it out, I did get a little revenge as I woke his wife up early this mor

New railway bridge

Just about to commence work on a railway bridge across the station throat. Already have a road bridge across there, now it's time for a single track railway bridge to cut across the station throat, at a lightly different level.   Once constructed, I will be able to park short trains or locos on it from time to time...

Colwyn Bay Goods, a Reintroduction.

Introduction My name is Bryn and I've decided to build a layout for the 2mm Association's golden jubilee challenge, based around the goods yard at Colwyn Bay. What started as a shunting plank has now grown into a full layout, thanks to the competition. With the sheer luck of; the new Farish 24 and TTAs, new etched 2FS 16T minerals and cheaper DDC systems, it looks like this might be possible after all.   The Prototype The goods yard at Colwyn Bay was built in the early part of the 20th centu
