Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

MTA weathering

Hi Folks,   I've been a bit busy with work and a new layout project (more later) but finally found time to start transferring my bits and bobs from the old RMWeb. Here's a synopsis of my wagon weathering thread: original page on Old RMweb __________________________________________   ??? Originally posted on Sun Aug 23, 2009 4:13 am   I was inspired by Northern Maiden's thread (among others) to take the plunge and have a go at weathering a wagon. I've done a few buildings before with wash

More Grey and Green Stuff appearing

Ballasting work and bushes are appearing on the layout, and I promise some more photos later today.   The only thing bothering me now is the capacity of the fiddle yard. I need to make room for a Deltic and 3 coaches, where at the moment I can only hold a deltic and 2 coaches. So a curved point, will be used to make on long siding along the back of the yard, and the 3 way point making up the other 3 sidings. I think that makes sense.   With pay day looming another shopping list is being fo

What you've missed

Still not totally sure on how to deal with the blog on RMWeb with 5 blogs out there already covering my layouts/projects. Anyway there has bee some activity at http://7daymodelrailroad.blogspot.com/ that includes a rather nice scrapyard vista, some rusty wheels and a railbox model review and an exhibition outing coming up for the layout. So you should get over to http://7daymodelrailroad.blogspot.com/ and check it all out.   Ian

Not the best quality photo, I think the enlarging hasn't done me any favours but then its difficult to know what to expect when you're trying to get fout foot of model carriages into one photo - but anyway I'm posting it for what its worth.   Please excuse all the mess on the mantelshelf.   Rovex

Cottleston Park

A few more snaps of Cottleston Park (still being referred to as such until a new name is decided upon (although should it now be Cote-le-Stone?)).   First up is 009Matt's Tomytec Portram. Looks good and runs well, but the question is how long will it remain like this before it get butchered into the latest incarnation from the East Hants workshop?   Next up is a visior from Hong Kong - a Ktt set produced as a limited edition by Kato. Yes, the loco does look suspiciously like an SBB class 4

JMA coal hopper progress

Hi all, Thought i'd restart this topic which was mainly started by Ian Fisher on the old rmweb: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=40988 I'd already started on this previously but hadn't made agreat deal of progress, this gave me a bit of a kick-start and some good info and pics of the prototype. The JMA, originally used by National Power before purchase by EWS shares the same basic bodyshell as the Freightliner HHA, with Bachmann releasing their excellent model of the HH

Attacking a Farish Mark 1 Coach

Wadebridge is going to need stock and some of that is Mark 1 regional railways stock for the summer services at least (I've even got an 'Atlantic Coast Express' headboard waiting to get etched to fit on the 31 8)).   The Farish Mark 1 was a superb model for its age, and Bachmann have really brought out the best in it with the newer printing/paintwork, bogie and wheel updates. Unfortunately there are three things that totally suck (plus the couplings): the buffers, the lack of proper rubbing pl

Lets Start Again.

Hi Guys..   well what with the new look RMweb i seem to have lost all of my old posts.. so decided to start a new Blog for my layout..   i havent got the time.. nor effort right now to post pictures and a description of the layout.. but will do this either later.. or tomorrow.   must be a way to transfer my old posts over?! either way.. this will most likely be where i post all my latest updates..   thanks for reading..   for now please check out Oakleigh my website. best viewed in Sa

latest on 70 footers

Not been upto much lately, but have given the latest two coaches an undercoat of grey primer, which is brilliant for showing where you need to do more sanding and filling . Added all the end details handles steps etc. I've got the underframes built (just need some more vacuum cylinders) and the interiors bashed together from Hornby remnants.   The brake third just needed a luggage compartment building, the all third was made by cutting and splicing the four third class compartments from the

The Matrix

Is now hooked up to the point motor control board. Took some working out with some boolean logic and luck. I now need to mount it on something, so that the whole shooting match can be detached from the layout. The feed from the control panel and the outputs to the motors will probably be added on site.   I'm looking forward to getting back to modelling!     Did anyone spot the deliberate mistake? I wired the second row of chips input into the output of the first row! Duh!

Railcar update

Over the weekend I did some more work on the railcar   I sprayed the body with satin varnish so I can now fit the windows. Also chopped the Hornby seated driver about and he fits nicely in the drivers seat.   Wipers fitted to each of the 4 wheels, I think the gear set is 30-1 which is a bit fast on my H & M Clipper unit so will try it on a feed back unit once the layout is up and running. Roof will be fitted once the glazing has been completed and some people have been installed. W ir

Is anybody reading any of this?

Anybody out there?   I have no idea if it is worth my while bothering with this. At least with the old site, I could see the number of reads changing, and there were some helpful hints for me in the comments. (Mike's earlier comments on RMweb 4 were a continuation of his wisdom from RMweb 3 thread).   There is a problem with the shoebeams which arrived recently. I could tell what I have found, but I don't have reason to believe that it matters to anyone else, so I'll keep the information to

It's Showtime!

A landmark decision was made made on Friday.   As of next year Cottleston Park will be no more, replaced for one show only by Cote-le-Stone and thereafter as a Japanese outline layout!   Work is already started on the scenics to shift it away from the UK scene to something a little more exotic...   Shows to be attended next year will be the Alton Febex - as Cote-le-stone and then the Midhurst show on the 28th February in full Japanese splendour!   A Japanese name was selected last Friday

Troublesome Wagons

Now for a proper update (rather than transfers from the old forum)   Some progress has been made in the last 2 months, though sometimes it doesn't feel that way.   The two SSAs are finished , though I'm not 100% satisfied they're OK... One is in blue and is not quite as free rolling as I'd like , while the other is in EWS red and has given a good deal of trouble with the weathering. Really , I think the proper tool for the job - depositing a fine even layer of grime - would be an airbrush.

Hinton Parva - Preparation for Wycrail

This weekend sees the High Wycombe and District Model Railway Societies annual Wycrail exhibition Hinton Parva will be the Societies layout at the show this year (having 9 layouts they are only exhibited at our show in rotation) This Wednesday will see the dismantling of the layout at the clubrooms in preparation for the weekend.     We will have a special guest operator this weekend experiencing the whole process of exhibiting a large club layout (Hinton Parva is 32' x 10') in the form of

Wills Garage kit

A little while back I had built the Wills garage kit to go next to a cottage at the south end of Rannoch. I wanted to create a nice run down sort of feel to it so had distressed the doors to represent rot and wood splitting, one window has been boarded up and the whole thing given some brown and black washes to represent a worn and faded creosoted look. The roof was also quite fun to weather with some silver and rust shades added before toning down with some black and dark green washes. The only

Progress this weekend

After a bit more work this weekend, the roof detail is now revised to match the photos of 2101. I've still got to do the junction boxes at inner ends - the Branchlines castings seem a bit small so I'll be making my own out of plastic strip.   An order is going in the post to the SRG for some of the earlier pattern buffers.

Back on the Branch

Charmouth seems to have gone all shy and is trying to hide behind the freezer. I think it must be nervous about Warley!   Meanwhile Walton has been dusted off ready for a local exhibition next Saturday. The use of a flat screen monitor, laptop computer and plastic shelves provides a new high-tech information system to replace the pieces of paper that used to be posted at strategic places around the layout!   Now there's 1970s for you. A beat up 24 and a tranny.   Now there's a messag

Widnes messing

Some snappy shots of Widnes taken during testing of the layout.   This is a "test" blog, once I get a grip on them I will use this to summarise what I'm up to on Widnes.       Yes I know - BUFFER !!!!!     60021 shut down during a possession on Widnes.     Here's a 66/7 thats heading for 66723 ...     And an overview during testing.   Some videos are here ..   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjuDuuqMp4U   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cku26OZ6lA   http://www.y

Mild panic.......

Now less than a week to go to Grime Streets first outing (see http://www.britishtr...newsheaton.html ) and mild panic is setting in, I fully expect it to be replaced by blind panic by Thursday!   Having said that most things are going ok, the actual layout and presentation are pretty much there, I couldn't get the 'proper' street sign in time so had an old style GRIME STREET sign made up by a local sign maker, bargain for a tenner, really finishes of the presentation. I'll stick a picture up w

Variations on a theme, more prototypes for my underframe

I've not received my levers etch back from PPD yet (not sure if its stuck in a post backlog..) so I haven't done much in the meantime as my workbench is full of unfinished wagons.. I have tried fitting the underframe to a couple of different wagons though just to see how it goes and add some variety to my fleet.   First is a LNER 6-plank merchandise wagon based on the ABS kit for a 9ft wb unfitted example. A bit of filing back of the white metal solebars and once soldered together the underfra

What to do for a loco shed?

So the retaining walls around the loco depot are taking shape. As i said previously I bought, but haven't finished, a Scalescenes loco shed and I don't think this is going to look good enough even if I do get it finished. The Bachmann shed is too big to fit so as far as I can see I'm left with just a few options (1) use the old Hornby kit seen here with a coat of paint, replacing the floor and adding some dirt (2) the Peco shed which will just about fit (3) no shed at all. Actually best of all I
