Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

The main plan is 28ft long for the track layout but a small plan is something that we most do so that it can be posted. Diesels will be run on the layout, the running period is from steam days to present day. Class 20's, 31's

Since our move to North Wales I have built a number of new layouts both for myself and for friends. Probably the most famous of these is Porth Eithin, a china clay, which has featured in Model Rail twice, on the Model ra

withdrawn class 08s - finished

Goodevening - this afternoon I finally weathered the chassis of the two class 08s shown earlier - so theyre now finished - I cant even remember when i started them - most of the colores used are derived from mixtures of Rail Grey, humbrol rust and executive dark grey. lucky i have these two locos out the way now - as thw workbench is clear for a nice new 50015 tfn   Jon

Faded Glory - Modelling a faded Mainline 09 Shunter...

I've always had a thing about Class 08s and 09s - and when younger rememeber seeing the Bachmann model appear as a pre-production sample in every years catalog and the model never make it to my local shop. [   When I returned to the hobby two years ago the Bachmann and Hornby models were available, with pro's and con's to both. I personally prefer the shape of the Bachmann model and they run very well on Paxton Road. I recently chose to model 09007 based on the Bachmann model of 09006. This re

New buildings and Fiddleyard removed

The lad had been less interested in the layout of late, I couldn't work it out until I realised that he couldn't see further than the fiddleyard!! . So we have removed the whole thing and now the lad can see right over to the station - Success!   I had really wanted a fiddleyard to make a 'proper' layout but with our configuration it just would not work - at least we can see the trains running round now.   Elsewhere on the model we have installed our new platform, building and yard lights

Full Size XtrkCad Plans Tested

As described in our first post our bookshelf N-gauge layout is going to be closely based on the excellent OO Dudley Road by Pete Harvey. We have attempted to recreate the plan using Peco Code 55 in XTrkCad.   One problem we have encountered so far seems to be the lack of 3-way points in N-gauge let alone a set with Code 55 rail. We've looked at offerings from Fleischmann, Trix and Arnold but they look so different they'd really stick out like a sore thumb. Rumour has it that Peco are due to re

Replica 4Epb- Complete

Hi All,   The 4EPB is now complete, after the receipt of a package from Replica Railways. Ordered by phone, I had the items two days later. Excellent service. The motor bogie is a 5 pole Hornby one, fitted with their excellent coach wheels. The gear wheel clips off of the original wheels so it is just a matter of adding spacers and fitting to the new wheels. Here are some pics.             Overall it has been an enjoyable and quite relaxing conversion to do. I will probably

Plodding along

With a combination of supply difficulties and my own lack of focus, there's been little visible progress recently. I've been focussing on Steinrücken as I had a delivery of points for it, and already had tortoises in stock. I copied Will Vale's mods on the peco points, aside from the diaganol sleeper- the formations I've laid so far don't really make this noticable. This actually marks a return to Peco for me, owing to dissatisfaction with Tillig ones with NEM wheelsets. I still like Tillig's f

Welcome to Harpers Road

This layout blog is about the design and construction of the model railway that I am building for my 6-year old son, Seth. It is also the first model railway we have built.   Because we live in a tiny Victorian terrace there is no room for grand schemes and we have decided that for our first effort we will stick to a compact book-shelf layout and so that we can fit in as much as possible it will be N-gauge. We don't know much about trains other than we like watching and riding on them (we live

Building more etched stuff

I've been rather busy and come holiday time busier still as I've been taking all the kits I seem to have acquired and building them. At the moment my desk is occupied by a Worsley Works 02, and 10203 which I'm currently attempting to produce.             I've also got a part built SHT Peckett but just discovered there are multiple versions of the Bachmann 0-4-0 US dock tank and that I've got the wrong one. Grumble.

50030 for the scrapline

Goodevening - today ive finished another 'withdrawn' loco which will join my two BR blue class 08s on the Laira scrapline. 50030 Renown - the loco is in revised NSE light blue - but for some reason got NSE dark blue cabs at one end -- nice! As its a withdrawn loco ive taken out the gears so its just free rolling , incase it needs to be shoved along a siding or something. Ive not gone too far with the weathering - as i saw the real loco when it has just been laid up, and it was still in pret

coombe junction - Backscene 3

Update - Still awaiting my package of tools/equipment from the UK to get cracking again, so thoughts again turned to the backscene. After reviewing a number of other terrific layouts on the forum here, it occurred to me that perhaps it might be better to intoduce a 'proscenium arch' type enclosure to view the layout. This would align with Moorswater viaduct, with the lines passing through as a cut out. The resulting top of the frame could be used to run some small discrete strip lights along the

even I am beginning to think the junction is too complicated... I should draw a track plan... one day.       86 on parcels passes on the down fast whilst a dead 87 is dragged by 57011 on the up... it is as yet unexplained why some mk4's sit in the platform on the down slow.         a view over some of the junction - a 56 sits in one of the "dumping ground" sidings along side some misc freight. the main line can be seen climbing off to the left.       peeking further rou

Lack of cash = lack of action

Hello everyone. Well I wish I had some more pictures to show you all but unfortunately I do not have any for today. Basically at this time of year the Christmas Presents for my friends and family have had to be purchased which has left no money for any further work on the layout. However I do have some time off so in the next few days I hope to be working on the following low budget improvements to the layout (and for some reason when I post a list of stuff to do on here it actually helps me get

    • For anyone interested in seeing how the Ontario layout in the Pilentum video linked into the blog post was built, there's a thread here on a Benelux modelling Forum (in Dutch).  Build photos reveal how the layout goes together, as @AndyB highlights.  Very informative.   I have no connection with the builder, or with Beneluxspoor.net - everything I've linked to is in the public domain, Keith.
    • Unfortunately I don't have my copies of the S&W books by Ian Pope et al. at hand, only the scans I made of the wagon photos, mainly from vol.1 and 2. Luckily, many are dated GRC&W works pics, most from about 1890 to the mid 1910s, so presumably the 10t and 12t wagons were the newer kind being produced. There must have been many older, smaller wagons in use at the time, as the photos of Lydney yard in (I think) 1908 at the beginning of vol. 5 show what appear to me mostly 8t mineral wagon
    • Noting that you "have been building stock appropriate for the Forest of Dean in the early '20s.", I am interest to see that the use of larger wagons persisted in the area from much earlier Broad Gauge (BG) Days.    In my own blog,  I have written about BG wagons built for carrying both coal and pig iron down through the Haie Tunnel to the dock at Bullo Pill.  Ian Pope et al quote an incident from 1863, when a train of 70 wagons broke free and led to a ‘pile up’, said to be 15 wagons hi
    • Thanks Andy, some good pointers as always.  I think the picture in my blog post of the abbreviated mainline DB train illustrates your point about train length very well.  Fortunately I also have a couple of railcars:   Epoche I:       and Epoche III / IV:     As for goods or freight trains, this is only 20" long in OO and could be used to generate ideas too:       I do need to give some further thought
