Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

More problems with that platform

Well, I've tried playing with templot, and sadly havent had much success with the platform modifications.   Thanks to some information on DEMU and some diagrams from the Scalefour Society I was able to confirm how wide the platform should be. Unfortunately after completing both of my planned modifications (shifting the point back and increasing the curve on the platform track) I still have not been able to get the width of the platform to comply with even the minimum standards (let alone those

More planning and thinking and research

We've decided that the main running lines will be FB rail (as they were by the 50s) but with the yard and refuge sidings still in BH. Research into the precise kind of FB fixings is ongoing (and thanks to Colin Craig's website and links for valuable material on this).   Whilst at Warley I also bought a Lens of Sutton photo listing from Roger Carpenter's stand and was pleasantly surprised to see a dozen or so Balcombe photos listed, so they will be ordered.   Another piece of luck is that my

Southeast Steam Railway - Buildings!

Hi,   Came back from Warley with a bag of Buildings for Bigporth, these were:   A Pikestuff two road depot for the Carriage and Restoration centre A Will timber Signal Box These will be built of Thursday & Friday, seen as I have those days off!   I didn't get any of the signals I needed because by Sunday Afternoon, when i had time to do some shopping, they had all gone!!!   I also got some nameboards for Bigporth, so these will be appearing in due course   Also, Hattons has d

Hinton Parva - Wigan preparations underway

Now that Wycrail is over it is time to put right all those things we found to be a problem before the next outing to Wigan in just over two weeks time. We now have two more Wednesday evenings to do the testing and any fixes we need before it gets taken down again. We have already fixed a couple of wiring faults and I am now working on building some new optical sensors to replace the ones we have in the fiddle yards that interlock the signals controlling the exit from the scenic sections. We have

Hythe Parkway - Magazines

Hi Guys,   During the time I was exhibiting at Warley, I managed to talk to Ben Jones of Model Rail to find out when Hythe will appear in the mag. I got a very helpfull and freindly response that it will be appearing in the middle of next year, possibly June/ July!   Also at Warley I spoke to Steve Flint of Railway Modeller, we talked to him at the HW&DMRS open day about a possible article, and came back with a definate article. I'll say more about it when it comes!   On another note,

A small planning update:

Not a whole lot more has been accomplished since I posted the introduction yesterday, but there has been one pretty significant issue come up. As mentioned earlier I have based the trackplan on that at Botley to the point where its a pretty accurate representation. The problem has come with the branch platform, which on the prototype is just a headshunt which runs parallel with a platform. the problem is that this requires a much wider platform in order to satisfy the requirements (its curren

The beginnings of Bad Horn

It had started as a sector era Southern Region layout. Inspired by Weymouth, I'd got as far as having laid the track and put platforms in. I was plugging away at building a small fleet of EMUs, and ordered myself some Peco insulator chairs and conductor rail from my local model shop.   I think it was two months into the wait for the chairs that something clicked in my mind. Tidying my playroom railway room I was sorting through my German outline models, seperating the mid 1980s (Epoch IV) mode

Buildings - Harbour Office - Stages 2 & 3

Managed to get a bit more work done on the Harbour Office.   Stage 2. The building is now 3d. I've inserted a false floor to give the box some strength. The wall to the extension has been given a panelled wood effect.   Stage 3. The extension is being constructed, it's seen here temporarily placed against the main building for the photo. The wall of the entension are all clear platicard, with the panelling and framing added on. As this building will be at the front of the layout, I inten

Yamanouchi Oshika

A fairly quiet night on Friday, with only four of us in attendence. For me, it was the chance to run a couple more trains and to start planning the town area. The rather faint lines on the board are sketching out a wide boulevard, to be flanked by high rise buildings. There was the suggestion we would have a tram line, however in view of the space and available time this is now unlikely.   A couple of buildings were obtained at Warley, and we will start locating these next week, although I

Ponderings

I am beginning to wonder whether to keep this blog up, or whether to go back to the old style and put it in layout topics. Personally I find the blogs a great way of updating progress and the latest are always at the top of the pile. But I don't seem to be getting as much feedback as before. Sure, people are reading it, but there is just not the comments there was before. And looking at other's blogs, it seems that this is the case across them all. I do enjoy reading other's comments and critici

Two Shay! Part 1

As I mentioned earlier, most of my modelling is in On30. So here is one of my many pojects in that scale and gauge.   Two Shay! Part 1:   As my On30 layout is a logging layout, I naturally have a shay on my line, infact I have two (hence the title). One of these was a second hand model with DCC sound and the other is just DCC fitted.   One of my purchases from yesterdays visit to the Warley show was a Backwoods Miniatures dress up Kit for the Bachmann Shay. The plan is to share the parts b

Somewhere to run Blanche

A brief entry...   There hasn't been a great deal of progress with Blanche for nearly a month now - the bosses have been laminated onto the rods, and the eccentrics soldered on to the axles, but that's about it - I spent far too long getting my boots looking like black glass for Remembrance Sunday... worth it though!   I'm oop north this weekend, so no physical work, but some planning has been going on - dusty areas of my brain, related to layout planning, have been blown clear of cobwebs, a

Handrails and radiator

There is still quite a bit of detailing to add to the engine casing.   Starting with the engine top cover which was made by first laminating together a half-etched top and [51] and [50] followed by a bottom spacer [52] that is slightly smaller all round. Before assembly, these parts were all rolled on the mat to impart on them a gentle curve. This assembly was then soldered to the top of the engine casing. There is no reference mark for its position but the drawing with the kit and photographs

Spend, Spend, Spend, or, Sunday after the Battle

It's officially a day for quiet reflection and I'm back from Warley after what inevitably seems to turn into a spot of retail therapy. And since I've not actually made or done anything - I've simply flashed the plastic in various directions - it seems inappropriate to muse on the fact on a workbench blog. That's for making things.   I finally succumbed to an order from Hattons a week or two back . I'm now the proud owner of a Central Trains 158. It needs a decoder fitting of course, but that i

An introduction:

A new blog for a new project, given that Bodmin is now officially on hold for the foreseeable future, I've now got on with my new project, 'Un named Junction' The idea behind it has been discussed in its companion topic here, in short it is a terminus station with branch line allowing operation in a similar way to what I would have had on Bodmin, however the station is designed to allow future expansion to be a full continuous run layout. The track plan is based upon Botley on the southern regio

Clan Line - P4ing the Merchant Navy

This project has been on the go for a rather long time...   It started off with the purchase of a Hornby Clan Line body off ebay a couple of years back, the intention to use it along with an etched chassis to model Clan Line in its preserved condition to add a loco to power my VSOE rake. Unfortunately as I found out in the days following buying the body, such a chassis kit didnt exist. A Tender was added about a year later (purchased by mistake for another long term steam project (Tangmere),

Detailing the rods...

Slowly getting there still... All of the rods are detailed now   I think there are only ('only' he says) 5 things left on the list now... a couple of which i still need to buy a couple of bits for...   Small cab steps. Bolts for the steam fountain access panel on the roof - Scale Hardware. Sanding pipes. Injector overflow pipes. Main driver leaf springs - Hobbyhorse/Reynalds.       JB.

Calshot Article

I have done a write up for Calshot in case I decide to publish it in the model railway press. Let me know if there is anything you think could be improved, i'm sure there is! ___________________________________________________   Calshot A slice of the South Coast in the late 1950s       JAMIE WARNE wanted to create a layout with little space, less skill, and even less money, but still try and create a convincing scene of the South Coast.       Calshot was always a place I had a

Influences

As mentioned previously on the last incarnation of RMweb, the things that have led to this plan are:     Neil Rushby's fantasticShell Island A holiday spent walking around the Forest of Dean A longstanding interest in the colliery branchlines of County Durham and Northumberland This Youtube footage of a Northumberland branch line at the end of its days Mines a Pint's Deadwater Burn   I'm seriously constrained by space, and am happy to with the idea if simple shuntin

More cars.......

I purchased some Tomytec vehicles at the Warley show yesterday. However, they were loose and unboxed, so I'd be grateful if anyone could identify the make and model of each of them (the two on the left are the same);       G.
