Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Wrexham & Shropshire Blue/Grey Mk3s

In the first of many you'll-never-see-it-at-Manchester-Victoria-let-alone-at-Manchester-Victoria-in-the-eighties posts, here are some Dapol Inter-City mk3s with added "Wrexham & Shropshire" branding. The decals are from Precision Labels and come in a pack with eight logos, which is ideal for a prototypical rake of three coaches. I've only applied the decals to one side of the coaches, so I can still run them in a chronologically correct livery for the layout.   The coaches themselves are

N gauge downunder Neb - Sturminster Newton

Well, I??™m about to take-off down to the beach for a week, a sort of pre-leave leave. Or as my wife puts it, time for us to spend time alone prior to our new arrival in the new year. Anyway, I thought I??™d better update on the little progress made on Sturminster in the past month. Time has had to be juggled between work, fire brigade training (yet another bad fire season is expected down under), anti-natal classes and keeping my 35 week pregnant wife happy (any tips most welcome).   I got

Southwark Towers

I've been researching the Southwark Tower building that stood over London Bridge Station and have decided that I will include it as a very iconic structure of the area. As it was completed in 1976 and demolished mid 2009 it will rather define the era for the layout - but I'm more than happy with that period.   The triple winged towers were 320ft high which scales out as a little over 2 feet tall in N gauge 1:148 scale. Along with the other high rise building at the front of the station that I

Buildings - Harbour Office - Stage 4

Following my help request thread for 'what items would go in a harbour office', I've added a roll top desk, some filing cabinets, a book shelf, a desk around the windows at one end and some desk items, being a book and some ashtrays so far.   The extension now has a roof and the start of the panelling and other dressing around the outside.     Other items to add are : Inside : Telephone, kettle, mugs, coat rack & coat, maps/charts, vhf radio & radar, people!, chairs and ligh

Signs and portents... or even posters

Today I wanted to play with backscene ideas. My first thought was that I'd make a loose draft on some lining paper, but it turned out we haven't got any. Then I decided to make a collage of trees and building images, but the printer was out of ink. Oh, excuses, excuses, but I still felt the urge to do something so noodled around with some of the Kibri fittings.     It's not bad, if a little plasticky looking. I'm reasonably satisfied with it as a small part of the larger whole. I'm still on

Done some painting, the two shades of brown are not noticable to the eye but show up pretty bad on the picture, will have to check in daylight tomorrow and add further weathering.   J.P.

The Track Plan (WIP!)

Missy has asked if I had a track plan for what I'd be building.   Well, sorta!     The background is a combination of a scan from "Manchester Victoria Station" by Tom Wray and screen shots of Google Maps. The scan represents Manchester Victoria in the 1930's, and Google Maps show the area post-Arena.   The yellow lines are track I've worked out from photos etc were around in the 1980's, the light blue line I'm not 100% sure about.   The green area is the approximate non-scenic area o

London Bridge Station visit

I visited London Bridge Station today to collect some more pictures of areas and buildings that I have few details of. Things are changing rapidly - there's a big hole in the ground and some of the steel structual skeleton of the Shard has already appeared. The concourse roof has been cut back significantly and Thomas street is closed to traffic along the building site boundary.   One of my intended targets was the small box at the West end of the through platforms and some of the buildings be

A most implausible arrival

One of the reasons I chose to model Farthing was the rather unusual combination of stock sometimes seen in that area. In this case, East meets West as the thoroughly Cornish 0-4-4T No. 34 heads a train of Holden 4-wheelers from the Metropolitan area. A highly implausible combination, especially during this period and in this location! Above, Driver T. F. Oberon eases the branch train into the bay, while Fireman R.S. Peaseblossom is looking desperately for his lunch bag.

The magic number........of 2010 !

I suspect, unlike the 2012 Olympics, Brooke Stone at this early stage, appears to be, on time, on budget and most importantly on size !!   After another woodwork session this afternoon the detachable fiddle/loco hide was constructed and with the use of alignment dowels (4) and side catches (3) added to the main board.   On the fiddle yard board 2 high sides have been installed using 6mm ply with the back left open for access to the 5 running lines. Another scratch built structure will span t

Starting the detail

The walls looked a bit stark, so I decided to see if a plynth at the bottom of the walls would look better. It breaks up the wall quite well (looks better in real life where depth is more apparent), I will bevel the tops once the solvent fully drys. Window sills have been added , and will also be beveled. Windows are tacked in place (well I hope they are).   Have added a horizontal barge board under the capping, as it looks better being there rather than a bare wall. I think I will put thi

Gresley Bogies

All been a bit hectic and I seem to have spent all my modelling time on real work and also Ultima sorting. Finally got a bit of time however so the Gresley now has bogies. Don't yet have the NGS bogies for the Thompson but I do have the TPM goodie bag so I can get cracking on the rest of the Regional Railways rake.   I've also now got a nice set of "Atlantic Coast Express" plates which will go nicely on the SWT 159 in modern image mode. Wondering about destructing a Dapol 153 when the prices c

Boxfile Kyle - sketches...

Update - Whilst progress has been slow on the two main boards, I have been giving the fiddleyard boards and storage a lot of thought. For a while I was torn between hacking my cassettes to fit from Coombe Junction, making new ones or using a sliding traverser.   Finally I have a direction I am going to explore further, which has been drawn through, via a series of sketches in non modelling time. The idea is to make 3 new cassettes which hinge in the middle to a] fit within the rolling stock b

Southeast Steam Railway - Progess!

Hi,   With the day off school, I decided to have a 'modelling' day. So I got to work with the pikestuff kit and the signal box. By about 2 o'clock this was the state of play:   The carriage and Wagon Restoration centre is ready to be installed:     The signal box is painted and ready to be glazed:     I will install the glasing tomorrow (got another day off school!), but it won't be finished until after the wigan show on the account of having no detailing kit (which I will pick up

Network Rail MENTOR coach - Part 1

Attached below is a photographic record of the first day's work on this conversion. The Mk1 coaches were picked up cheaply from a local model shop. I used 2 BSKs for this conversion. I made a bit of a mistake, however. What I'd thought on first glance were 2 Hornby coaches turned out to be 1 Hornby and 1 Mainline. This caused some issues with the thickness of the coach sides when rejoining them, but nothing that couldn't be rectified by a little filing. I used the Hornby model as the 'base' for

Network Rail 31285 and DBSO 9702

Below are some pictures of my recently completed Network Rail loco and DBSO. Conversions were carried out using parts from Hurst Models, Railmatch paint, and transfers from Hurst and Fox. A Mk2 coach has also been repainted but needs a final decision on numbering. The Mk2s were picked up cheaply at a recent show, while the 31 is a Lima model picked up for less than ??20 on ebay. All repainting was carried out by hand. The DBSO still needs a little detailing work, most notable the addition of an

Track!

ok now i have the track plan, i gave it to a friend of mine from my local club to 'blow up' to 9'x2'. Track and points are slowly being collected, although i think i now have enough track, but i am still 4 or so points short for the scenic section!   The 'exploded' plan was then layed out onto the boards and cut in half, as the diagram was only 8'6" long. NExt will be the task of cutting out the river and fiting hte bridge before any track goes down - apart from track pins, what other way is

A bit more work on the roof

As the roof grows the structure stiffens up (thankfully)I have enough roof pannels to complete 3 out of the 5 tripple spans. I have also started the capping on both the roof tops and brickwork over the entrances. I will carry on with the foofs until I use up the pannels. I will then order some more along woth some 1mm microstrip to make the north lights with.   I will fit again the barge boards to hide the join where the roof meets the walls. Before fitting the downpipes I will see if a brick

More Green, and now Brown stuff appearing

Now I can get onto the computer at home. I can now update with what is happening with Tigh Charrann. I have started to weather the rails using Railmatch Aerosol Enamels, a little more ballasting, and also planted a field. The photographs are pretty self explanatory.         I managed to get a few more bits and pieces at Warley, to sort out the Kadee issues with british rolling stock. Also picked up a Mk1 BG blue grey and Mk1 BG in full blue to form the parcels train. A Large Logo 37

Yet another 47

Or rather 2 of them..... Having come home from Warley with a Vi Trains 47/4 in Large Logo, I've now gone and added a 47/7 in Res to the fleet. (Ontracks have them on offer at ??47!)   Despite the model having not arrived yet, thats not stopped a bit of a research session to work out what I will end up doing with it. I am going to keep it as 47768 'Resonant' So heres a couple of links to prototype photos. A photo Another Photo 47768 working a FGW daytime loco hualed service   The planne

More Grasses

The canal is starting to get hairy. This is from Woodland Scenics field grass cut into clumps then pushed into dollops of PVA. Once it has dried I'll deal with some of the overlong strands and dust the canal. The hedge along the lane is scouring pad cut into strips and coated with Woodland Scenics coarse turf. (Thanks to everyone who pm'ed me with suggestions. You're all wonderful people :icon_thumbsup2:)

    • Hi Keith,   Well done for persevering over the past few years with your ideas and above all keeping your dreams alive and I’m glad that my thread has kept you entertained along the way. The very best of luck with your upcoming house move and hopefully once settled in, the creative thinking processes will kick in, swiftly followed by some modelling magnificence.   Best regards, Mark
    • Taken a while to get here with this one as I decided to go full function lighting which meant a complete rewire of the chassis and the body. This has day, night, tails on both ends which can be also switched on and off on end at a time. I also added an EOT lamp.   Ready for decals and bogie paint:
    • Small has a number of advantages when you are plagued by the usual problems of space, time, funds, deciding on a prototype/layout style/theme.   You can build and get to a 'sufficiently complete' stage to scratch that particular itch fairly quickly and if you decide it isn't what you want - or you have taken it as far as you want to go - you can move on to something else.   I look forward to seeing what develops.
    • Hope it goes well: definitely an exhibition I’d be interested in if I was still in the area.  Many, many years ago now I did my School work experience placement at the Longbridge works - it was a very different world in those days, Keith.
    • I have tried to discover why the later vans may have had black solebars.   Looking carefully at the 51 L model I note that the W irons do not have crown plates or side washers on the legs. The excellent model by Airnimal of an earlier version does have them.    Perhaps I am totally wrong but a theory. If the later D9 lacked crown plates that would suggest a wagon with flitched frames.  If so it would be metalwork not woodwork and painted black.    My researches have
