Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Replica 4Epb- Motor bogie

Hi All, Still waiting for the 5pole motorbogie. Went in the loft and found a 3pole version I didn't realise I had! Added some brass ultrascales from a dead 25. The bogie sideframes are the MJT product, designed for the incorrect Hornby wheelbase. I have given the bogie extra pickups so it runs on its own, but will also put pickups on the trailing bogie. Here are some pics of the bogie.         The 5 pole bogie when it arrives will go into either a DC kits 4 Cep or 6s. Can't decide wh

A start on trackwork

With the baseboards sorted and the trackplan pretty much finished, its time to start looking at track...   As mentioned in the outline, my method of satisfying the '5 things for 5 years of RMWeb' is the use of 5 different types of plain track. This includes: Bullhead rail with wooden sleepers and BR chairs - Modelled using Exactoscale chairs and sleeper bases with the latter modified to remove the webbing between the sleepers. This will have track feeds following Jim S-W's design here. C

Layout - Fisherton Sarum - post Warley

Well I think I have just about recovered from exhibiting at the Warley show last weekend (my third exhibition in three consecutive weeks with three different layouts!). From my perspective the show went well and from what I could see (although I did not manage to get around the whole show and see everything) the overall standard of layouts appeared to be very high and perhaps an improvement of previous years.   I am indebted to my operating team which comprised of my dad, Mark (GWMark on here)

Boxfile Kyle - Point taken...

Good Morning - Fresh start was made on the turnout last night and with a cold beer to steady my nerves things were significantly better than the last attempt. The chairs for the straight rail have been added, the frog has been made again but the curved rail is only pinned in place. I will need to redo the common crossing a third time, but solely due to my own ham fisted soldering skills when connecting the rails beneath for electrical continuity and alignment. I will be in contact [bryn] to dis

Setting the scene

It's difficult not having a firm vision in my mind, as I really want to get on with things. There are at least two areas I can develope, being the station itself and the hardstanding.   The station is fairly easy. There are certain things which need to be there, such as lighting, train information, benches and ticket machines. A recent find in Mack's Track takes care of much of this, although it's not as fine as some more recent models.     Yes, it really was $48. Unfortunately the shippi

Big boys toys...

Sometimes you know it's ridiculous, sometimes you know it is a waste of money, sometimes you know there are some fundamental flaws in the model - but sometimes you're just very very tempted!   The Barclaycard is in for a bashing. I've wanted a DCC sound locomotive for some time, and after taking some advice on the best RTR options I'm on the brink of breaking the seal and dipping my toe in DCC as well as sound for the first time.   I've had a soft spot for 25/3s after seeing the one at Llang

Bogie coach for Outwell

At last I have managed to make a start on the bogie coach. This being part of the D&S Models kit I got of e-bay some time ago now. I have already built the four wheel coach, and now found time to have a go at this one.

7 day layout nears completion

Time to report some more progress to the 7 day layout as it approaches its first exhibition appearance http://7daymodelrailroad.blogspot.com/2009/11/almost-there.html I'd post a picture here but I'm at work and the firewall won't let me do that...   IAn

life after New Hey

Heres the next project - Ive started a separate thread in layouts "Sparthbottom PCD" a mid 70s early 80s parcels depot.     Its in P4, viewing from the bottom and is totally ficticious aprt from the name - which is of the area in the centre of Rochdale where it would be if the LNW had built such a line!!

Now for something a bit different...

From previous blog entries, my fellow RMWebbers will know that I've been building a few van kits. Up first are my Parkside Dundas duo of PMV and Plywood sided CCT.     This just need transfers and weathering to complete   Up next is a fantastic, if slightly fiddly kit to build Ratio's SR 28 Ton Bogie B Passenger Van. This needs the glazing and roof fitted, along with Transfers and weathering.     Also there has been a surprise arrival in the shape a Bachmann LN 30850 Lord Nelson. Run

Gussets ! ! !

Gussets!   OK I give up, what, where and why?   I have found them on the fret but haven't a real clue which way round they go and at what position. I think I have found the lower front ones [55] and rear ones [54] on the plan drawing but at what height? The top leading ones [64] are so small - blink and you will miss them. Anyway I did take the precaution of punching out the rivets on [54 & 55] before removing them from the fret.     The instructions state "on this loco they are rat

Hythe Parkway - 4-CEP

Hi Guys   I've added some pictures of my newly arrived 4-CEP on my Southeast Steam Railway blog, there's also a step-by-step guide on how to couple the units:   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/blog/226/entry-1494-sesr-4-cep-arrives-how-to-guide/   Simon

SESR - 4-CEP Arrives + how to guide

Hi Guys,   The SESR's 4-CEP (Class 411) 4-car EMU has finally arrived!. It actually arrived yesterday, but I didn't get chance to open it!   Here's a few images:     I've heard comments about it was hard to couple the units together, so I decided to make a Step by Step guide   ATTENTION: Read Instructions before attempting to couple the unit!   Step 1: Unpack unit and place the unit near a section of track in the following formation:   DMBS (Powered car)     TS (place th

P4 stuff has begun to arrive...

A flurry of activity on the Rose Hill project over the last few days and after the inspiration last Friday, and a day or two to mull things over I ordered my first P4 bits...   Thanks to Dave at Ultrascale they arrived this morning - the wheelsets to convert the Pacer. I was so excited I had to test fit one of the driving sets before I even took a photo!! I've not yet got the trackwork and gauges ordered - so can't prepare the wheelsets properly as I need a back to back, but the visual improv

Structural progress and Big Brother?

Well it seems to have been an age but progress on Paxton Road has been made, despite the distractions of a new project!   The warehouse that was constructed right back in the dawn of the project before even the boards were built has been brought inside for 'finishing off'. The layered plasticard construction has caused a little warping in places that I've tried to put back with some thick bracing and superglue. The roof is going to need totally replacing.   I've started to detail it a littl

More on Halling mechanisms

The re motor begins, I've just received a parcel of Halling mechanisms, to be honest these don't seem to be that widely known (well I didn't know how good they were until recently!) so thought I'd stick a picture up, I'm sure they could have many other uses. Shown are 3 vario units, the base plates on these unclip and you can move one or either axle to alter the wheelbase from about 24 to 27 and 30mm and replacement wheel sets are available for HOe or HOm! The bigger units are 35 and 41mm respe

Basic Templot done

Spent a pleasant hour or three doing the basic Templot plan for Balcombe station yesterday, using the 1910 25-inch OS map as an underlying picture shape together with some photos in the 1950s to modify some of the detail/errors in the map and changes due to the subsequent elapsed time - notably the change in position of the trailing crossover between the two main lines from the platform area to north of the entrance to the down refuge siding.   FB on the main line (thanks to Martin Wynne for p

The First Sod Is Cut

After 9 months in the deciding, the deliberating, the procrastination and the planning, the first cuts into the baseboards were made today ready for my model of Manchester Victoria.   I intend to model Manchester Victoria as it was in the late eighties, covering platform 11 through 17, from Cheetham Hill Road to the far end of where Manchester Exchange was, not too far from Deal Street signal box. The layout will be modelled in 2mm using Easitrac for the track, and although I'll be running N s

The siren call of other railways

Before I went on holiday, my ideas for Bad Horn were pretty firm. It was going to be set in Nordrhein-Westfalen, the terminus of a branch line from Paderborn. A Teutoburg Forest setting would allow a hilly landscape and a tunnel as scenic break, yet close enough to conurbations to have a busy commuter service. There is a real town called Horn in the area, so the slight change to Bad Horn kept the local flavour and implied a tourist destination as well. Plus it's just a little rude, in a Derek an

A brace of shunters

A little progress today saw the 03 get its first coat of paint and the chassis a bit of treatment. Still some way to go yet but things are starting to come together nicely.   The Ruston is all but ready for a good clean up and primer. I'm debating whether to put the handrails on yet. I probably will but I'm going to sleep on it.   I had to make some adjustments on the Ruston chassis as having fitted my preferred wiper pick ups, I found that it conflicted with the inside hanging brake gear.
