Some shows such as the bike show pay to subsidise the parking fee for their visitors (which may or may  or be reflected in the ticket price for that particular show) it’s not that the NEC is charging more for the other shows as they get the same overall fee regardless.

Some shows offer free parking.

Some pictures from to-day (focussing on layouts, as I have posted things from trade stands in their appropriate topics, and using a smartphone camera as I did not want to carry a full sized camera with me):

Thanks for the pics. But by far they majority seem to be narrow gauge. Was that a reflection of the overall layout content at the show as someone else (elsewhere) remarked about the increased quantity of narrow gauge layouts this year?

The photographs are a reflection of what I spent the most time looking at: there were a lot of good narrow gauge layouts at the show this year (to the extent that I specifically noticed this), and so I spent some time looking at them. There was both a high quantity and high quality. It is not correct that a majority of the layouts or even the pictures are of narrow gauge subjects, however.

Dont wish to put a downer on your photos but in one of them you managed to get a woman who's breast feeding her baby at the bottom of the photo

Not your photos, one of ADBs. Surely no problem as if you are breastfeeding in a place people are taking photos then obviously you're not going to be offended by an accidental snap which isn't noticeable unless you carefully look.

By pointing it out you just drew everyone’s attention to it. I would never have noticed it.

Plus as has has already been said, if you are breastfeeding in a place people are taking photos then obviously you can’t complain if it’s accidentally papped.

Anyway, nothing to see here. Next post please.

Yes, I noticed this over the shoulder of the man using the next machine - unfortunately a few seconds too late to save myself four quid on an expensive (though good) day out.

Which raises an an interesting question - are Warley MRC aware of this discrepancy?  If they aren’t, it is  surely something they should be taking up with the NEC, because there is no obvious reason why different exhibitions should have different car park charges. If they are aware, perhaps the public should have been told.  If they are aware and complicit (I.e getting a ‘cut’ of the excess) that would be very poor ...

Show organisers subsidising their visitors through sponsorship of part of the parking fees. Has gone on ever since the NEC first opened.

The show organisers don’t pay it themselves, they either charge all visitors ( including those who travel by train ) more or they charge trade exhibitors more.

That depends on the venue. The best major show for parking must be Peterborough, free and plenty of it. Ally Pally IIRC is also free but some distance from the venue. Doncaster I haven't visited for a long time so I cant comment.

The show I've most attended at the NEC is Crufts,  which takes 6 halls of the NEC and the arena. (you think you've got problems getting round one hall of the show!!!) This unfortunately has the same parking fees.

There is nowhere else outside London ( even more expensive,  ) Manchester or Glasgow ( which has its own show) that is capable of taking this show.  It's also just a club show,  local to Warley MRC.  So they need to find a place nearby where all their volunteer members can do the organisation.

The NEC no doubt has to pay huge rates to the local council,  they have to pay all their staff,  which will be many people compared to a smaller place.  Could you imagine Warley MRC,  rounding up enough members,  and members partners to run a big enough T Bar for a show of this size?  Sadly I see no way they can reduce their prices.  Our hobby doesn't have enough big businesses involved to obtain much sponsorship.

This leaves the only way to reduce costs,  is to bring your own lunch, and choose cheaper transport.  Some sailing clubs, I belonged to, organised buses / mini buses to shows,  that surely would be the cheapest way of visiting.  Followed by car sharing.

That’s how we’re doing it. Myself and three friends driving up this morning from Worthing on the South Coast in one car.

Cheers

The hill at Ally Pally is getting to be a killer for me, not unfit enough for a disabled pass to park at the top,  but now beginning to struggle with the hill especially if it's frosty for the national dinghy exhibition..

Re: parking prices. If you go to the NEC website you can pre-pay for a parking ticket for £12 instead of the usual £16, provided you do it the day before. Either print it at home, or if already on site (no access to printer) save it to your phone.

They also provide free buses from the car parks into the centre.

Nothing worth anything is going to be free!

to put the commercial shows into context as a exhibitor on a trade show we used to pay in the region of £8k for a 6*8metre space. That is just for the space, no electrics (£500 for basic lights and a 1kw single socket), and this is just your on-site costs (your actual stand, travel hotel, food, graphic design, staff etc etc are extra). Have a hall full of trade like that, and subsidising the NEC parking is a bit of an easier decision than a show that is at best paying expenses to exhibitors.

Brilliant to see a decorated 2-HAP - did you, by any chance, get an idea of when delivery is expected of the production version? (I cannot find the predictive list on Bachmann's own site, and others are no longer reporting it in their progress charts/info.)

Many thanks in advance....

Not before March, next up is more 37’s and the class 24/158’s...
