I am looking forward to my first visit to Warley, but have heard it's shall we say, a bit of a "Marmite" show. Is there anything I need to know beforehand so as not to ruin the experience?

A lot of box shifters. Low on real modelling supplies although Eileen's and Phoenix are there.

Take your own food as the NEC will rip you off with eye watering prices for food and drink.

Wizard and Hobby Holidays also there plus good DCC support (Digitrains, Sunningwell etc)

Skytrex and LCut good for buildings

Railtec for transfers

Nice to see what the manufacturers have on show

Usually good book stands

Pick your demos - lots available

make a shopping list and plan where you need to go.....

Don't listen to 'advice' about the show - take it as it comes and enjoy it in your own way.

I shall now break rule #1 plan your route/exhibits that you want to really see as there will be more than you expect.

I received this from TMC on their regular email about Parking at the NEC!

Top Warley Tip, Save yourself £8.00!!

If you pre pay for your Car Parking at Warley this year then it will only cost you £12.00 instead of £20.00. Just follow the link below to book your parking in advance via the NEC website.

It's not a saving, payment is £20 to park 'near' to the halls or £12 for general miles away parking on the day or pre-paid.

A saving would be to park in the Virgin Trains car park which is £9 on Saturdays and Sundays, £3 less than the NEC.

Edit: Note the Virgin is a mix of multi-storey and open parking - the multi-storey is very near to an entrance to avoid getting wet.

As has been previously mentioned on this thread, you could also park at one of the other stations along the Birmingham to Coventry line (e.g. Berkswell, Tile Hill, Hampton-in-Arden) where the parking is free and get the train for the short hop to Birmingham International. Edited by SVRlad

Don't tell everyone..  :-)

Mind you; cheaper still is to park at Tile Hill for free and pay £2.30 return on London Midland.

I'm going to have to get there extra early now....!

As the NEC involves driving near Birmingham I am getting the train, discovered the Virgin parking option when attending a two day competition there earlier this year and had to drive.

I agree with the "Ignore most of the advice" line - It's a big show and there is something for everyone. While there is specialist trade, there's not as much as you would find at Railex, but then most of the people aren't interested in etched kits. The food is exhibition venue prices, more than taking your own sandwiches (which is fine, there is space to eat them) but you'll get sustenance for a fiver or so - re-calibrate your expectations to 2-3 quid more than McDonald's.

Actually, I covered a lot of this in a blog post 3 years ago: http://philsworkbench.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/annoying-things-about-warley.html

Take a look at the floorplan, aim to look at layouts rather than spending all day buying stuff. Accept you won't see everything in a day. Carry your rucksack by the handle on top but accept it's crowded.

Final hint: Don't try to get on the first train at the end of the day. Head over to the airport on the cable car thingy, sit down in a pub and have a meal/drink. Come back in an hour when the trains are quieter.

You'll certainly have to, every time I've used or driven past Tile Hill station recently it has been very full.

1- that seems to happen with certain layouts at any show, one I know of complained that they never got invites, they asked for 12 operators when 6 was plenty and the layout runs better when they aren't all getting in each other's way and chatting because there's nothing to do ;) All down to one person and deciding they must include everyone who built it!

2- Warley have always given us far more room than we asked for and it's made quite a nice social space with the layouts behind you.

3- as a result of 2 why not get those backpacks out of the aisles? ;)

At Model Rail Scotland and Warley previous years, I have put bags and coats under a layout or demonstration stand of a friend or fellow club member, so do this if you can and you feel it it safe to do so.

Will be there all weekend helping out on the CMC stand

However the key news is ... SWMBO is baking millionaires shortbread ! Yippee

Phil

Can I put a shortbread  order in for stand B87 Phil?

If anyone is passing do stop and say hello. (There may not be shortbread of any description though)

I was chatting with Colin of Alan Gibson yesterday, and he said he would have on the stand 7mm kits for S&D 7F, RHD – Deeley Tender & LHD - Fowler Tender. If all goes well he should have 7mm GER T26/LNER E4 and if Photo Etch keep to their word and deliver a week late he should have 4mm GER T26/LNER E4 and 4mm LMS Class 7F ‘Austin Seven’ These are in addition to those kits listed as available on his website......plus all the usual wheels and castings etc.

Looking forwards to seeing the 1967 shop, might have been interesting have have a 2067 concept shop too :-)

Cynic in my says just leave an empty stall with a recycle bin in the middle ;-)

I did ask the sponsors to come up with a 2067 shop but to date I haven't seen any ideas.

Still busy preparing information signs for the shop...beginning to think I didn't organise a big enough space...

i think you asked the wrong people.

Had you asked here, you’d have had so many ideas you’d fill a whole exhibition hall.

Trouble is none would reach a consensus and 50 pages in it would have turned to a livery debate.

Take your own food as the NEC will rip you off with eye watering prices for food and drink.

There is a small suppliers area ...Wizard models is in it for example. This is on the side away from the main entrance and is in the stand numbering around stand C61.

Obviously Meil you haven't been to a soccer match, test match cricket or other sporting event as the NEC prices are less than at some of these.

You can, as Phil has said, bring Sandwiches and a drink to have while you are at the Show.

It's a big show so check what you want to see before coming. If you can, come on Sunday as it is less frenetic than Saturday.

Baz

edited as I missed the "C" off the stand number doh!

Yes but as the sponsors are manufacturers always best to ask them...it may have been a hologram display voice activated...

Been there done that..

Back in 1985 British Rail had the exhibition train for GW150, one of the items on display was a holographic isambard kingdom Brunel talking about the GWR which responded to set list of questions you could ask it.

Now a shrink ray device which would allow you to put a model Railway layout into your pocket and later zap it back to full size, or perhaps a shrink clone device which instantly scans a full size item and replicates it in OO would put a whole new angle on CAD scanning...

It would solve the Warley backpack problem too, but the BO issue would remain.
