Forb those interested here are the measurements inside the rear frame.

Cartazzi about 23mm:

Bissell truck about 25mm:

bissell.jpg.1706df422aafbba6af6be7e4e3f06b15.jpg

You can also see the mountings for the wheelsets.

IMHO they are too wide, as there is virtually no side to side play in the wheel sets

Also they are not deep enough, as with the slightest dip in the track it bottoms the "bissell" wheelset lifting the back of the loco and reducing the adhesion of the driving wheels to nil.

IMHO the wheelbase is too long to be rigid. It needs some vertical movement.

The idea of an aftermarket 4 wheel truck sounds ideal, the mountings for the supplied wheelsets would need removing.

Thank you for posting those pictures; very useful.  It does looks as though there might be room between the frames for an inside-framed bogie to carry both trailing axles, but it would mean getting rid of the existing 'bearings'.  I shall investigate further when I get my hands on the 60700 version, although it may take some determination to set about cutting up an expensive model!

It's long since been a bugbear of mine this flangeless wheel. When I used a recent spec Brit chassis for my Golden Arrow Duke of Gloucester I cut off the offending "carrier" and fitted the GA cast truck. Easy enough to arrange for the sideways swing on sensible curves with some careful placement of pipework etc.

I have yet to encounter a 'fixed truck' Hornby Pacific that didn't yield to the attentions of a piercing saw and dental burr.

Hornby could easily make thes locos convertible between fixed and pivoting trucks - they just can't be bothered!

My W1 was collected from the Royal Mail today , no damge on reciept. A good runner , the only fault I have found is the screw fitted to the drawbar at the Loco end is too short. When tightened it locks the drawbar , looosen to allow the drawbar to move and the screw falls out. A longer screw will sourced tomorrow.

Running in , and photos of the Resin Truck supplied by Grame King, fitted to my Hornby W1 conversions mentioned in a earlier post.

TheTruck is filled with Liquid Lead and a scrap Brass etch stretcher connected to the tapped hole for the Hornby Cartazzi truck on the A4 and another for a  Hornby Drawbar connecting it to the Tender.

Two problems with the Hornby W1 . No Cartazzi tapped hole is present in the chassis . No provision to take the wires to the Tender. the W1 mouldings would also need cutting . On a £200 Loco, mine will stay as supplied. Its all Grey, it is not a noticable as on a LNER A4 Type would be with Red wheels.

The drawbar screws are stepped so shouldn't clamp the drawbar.

The loco and tender ones are different lengths.

Maybe been swapped ?

Most of the pictures I have seen show the drawbar with the two holes at the loco end.

At that end they can't be adjusted for short coupling, however short coupling is no good if you have tighter that 40"(?) or so radius as the loco wil meet the tender on curves when going backwards:

It seems that the whole back end is a bit of a compromise, where for display purposes it is fine but for running you are limited with the options.

Anyone tried the haulage?

I found 8 Hornby (full range) Teaks was OK on the level, maybe an extra 1 or 2 if you are lucky.

However with 8 it wouldn't climb my incline and slipped to a stand on the bend. With 7 it got up it but still some slipping. 6 was no problem.

Just a thought on the damaged locomotives.

is it possible that the plastic used for the body mouldings is a tad brittle ? The damage in the tender drawbar area I've seen in images suggest to me that the plastic is of a brittle nature.

As a matter of interest do Hornby (or any other manufacture for that matter) specify the grade/type of the materials use ?

Hi

This new model although well before the period I am modelling it's detailing and looks are stunning.

Only one comment is those loco lamps are a bit of a disappointment, I assume they come with the model?.

But great seeing members photos.

Regards

Wearing my very cynical hat:- Even if they do, what they get could be a very different matter.

And if the seller thinks they'll actually pay up.......

Interesting that the 2nd bidder showed up at 703pm at £320 and started a bidding war  for the whole next hour, with gaps.. to me it doesnt look accidental.

ebay should consider pre-registering buyers credit cards, and taking automatic payment upon completion.

My W1 arrived early this morning and thankfully it is fully intact. I still wish the shop had been able to check it for me as it would have saved 4 days of worry, but all's well that ends well.

My sympathies go out to everyone who has received a damaged one, and all the retailers who have lost sales due to this utter debacle. I would like to think Hornby will publicly acknowledge these problems and rectify them, but Simon Kohler doesn't strike me as a cap in hand apology type person. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Anyway all that aside, the model is utterly superb and I couldn't be happier with it!

Still waiting for mine from Hornby. Hermes tracking tells me that the label was printed on Friday and, er, that’s it

I got a tracking link but no tracking number so go figure that!

Thanks to due diligence and excellent packaging by Aiden and staff at Roxley Models I too have now joined the ranks of happy owners....

Hopefully the original retailer will refund in good time so the credit card bill arrives with just one to pay for  :-)

Not sure if I'm being cynical, but a few turning up on ebay emphasising 'unopened' boxes, some even posting totally nondescript out of focus photos:  'Which form a part of the description'

In any other circumstances that wouldn't worry me, or am I doing human nature a disservice?

Yes they are glued on at factory. Was a first seeing that. But not much glue was used, as one already popped off.
