The only problem I have with wearing a mask is if I have to do it for an extended period. Up to about an hour is OK but it gets a bit irritating after that.

For a while we had to all day at work, other than when eating lunch or having a cuppa. Even though we were widely separated. Occasionally (less than once a day) I'd start finding it felt really suffocating and just had to take the mask off for a few minutes. Having a conversation in one could be rather unpleasant too.

The first time I had to wear a mask for a long time was July last year, travelling from Scotland to visit my Mum in Oxford. With the journey from my home station to Glasgow Central, train to Euston, Underground Euston Square-Paddington and train to Oxford, I had a mask on for around 7.5 hours, with the only relief being on the walk from Euston to Euston Square. It was horrible, but had to be done, as indeed it has since. Under the new situation I will still wear one whenever instructed, and where it is voluntary, anywhere crowded.

I note Boris has said this afternoon that come September you will need to show prof of being double jabbed to enter nightclubs and other crowded places.

Talk about shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, would it not have been more sensible to make it a requirement now and ease out Furlough / business support more slowly?

Ah but that might get in the way of influential friends of ministers making money. Can't have that now can we?

(Mind you Nightclub owners are none to impressed with it either).

I believe the idea was to rely on the owners to make entry a condition of having the jabs/T&T etc, but after last nights/this mornings reported ridiculous free for all at virtually every club “big brother” has had to step on up again, unlike the major supermarkets who are insisting on customers wearing masks although not legislated.

Another case of relying on the British public’s sense of responsibility, now there’s an oxymoron if ever there was.

So no legislation, we are relying on the Great British Public’s common sense .  Nightclubs opening at 1 min past midnight - says it all really!

What time do you recommend opening a nightclub?

Midday?

Nightclubs are not my problem, any music I'm listening to at that time of night will be coming out of my own sound system!

I only go to pubs at lunchtimes since they reopened. Three pints is my comfortable limit these days and TBH, once I'm in at the end of the day, I can't be ar5ed to go out again unless its for something specific.

I'm not sure businesses are going to bounce back as they hope if I'm typical, though. Apart from my weekly food run, I'm feeling more, rather than less, inclined to make other purchases on-line now the great unmasked are being unleashed. I'm not "vulnerable" but why take unnecessary risks?

Actually I don’t recommend it opening ever. The Dutch government thought it was a good idea and look what happened there.I’m afraid it will be repeated here. It has been rather nice the last year or so not to have to put up with drunk/drugged, or both, people shouting at 4 o clock in the morning.

But the shot of the countdown to opening time on the tv news (obviously before midnight) showed the place was packed - how/why were they allowed in?

Yeah, but double-jabbed and recently bathed would be even better!

I won’t be touching nightclubs with a barge pole . No social distancing , possibly no masks , it seems to be up to the nightclub owners whether you wear masks or not , not ideal in a nightclub admittedly . It was the fact that the great British Public couldn’t wait until tonight to go but had to be there at 1 minute past midnight  - do you think this is the definition of people acting COVID responsibly ?

Absolutely, the brakes are off, let’s rip it up. ! No responsibility at all.

Here you's go, all yours again!

Katie Hopkins arrives at Heathrow Airport after being deported from Australia

Far-right British commentator Katie Hopkins has arrived at Heathrow Airport after being deported from Australia on Monday.

Ms Hopkins was escorted to Sydney International Airport on Monday afternoon after Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews had earlier said she would be kicked out of the country as soon as possible.

Ms Hopkins, who was reportedly in Australia for an upcoming series of Channel Seven’s Big Brother, told her 261,000 Instagram followers she had opened her door to guards naked and refused to wear a mask to “call out” Australia’s quarantine system and COVID-19 lockdowns.

The provocative post came as 12 million Australians were locked down in NSW and Victoria.

While Ms Hopkins appears to be walking outside an airport terminal in the photograph above, Heathrow Airport makes clear on its website that “as we continue to welcome passengers from around the world, wearing a face covering will still be required whilst in our terminals”.

Maybe it's an experiment to find out if cocaine, speed and ecstasy prevent the spread of Covid. :)

If it succeeds, there will need to be controlled trials, because the prophylactic affect might equally have come from poor quality vodka, or inadvisable/regretted intimate encounters. We’d need to be sure which of these various things should be prescribed.

I had to go to a giant 24/7 Tesco yesterday evening, to collect an order. 20% not masked, despite the PA running a tedious message encouraging masking, and if I was to characterise the “type”, I’d probably sound like a severe snob, so best I don’t. But, as on the train, “typography” isn’t simple - there were plenty of severely overweight people covered in tattoos who were wearing masks, besides those who weren’t.

And freshly laundered clothes would work better, no good being freshly washed if they put on yesterdays clothes!!

From yesterday, XC are allowing passengers to use aisle seats at the same time encouraging the continued use of face masks.

Bowing to the inevitable, it was slightly busier than last week yesterday but we are all expecting high numbers soon... I'm going on a another of our routes today so will see if the commuters are back in force at Reading later on!

I think that for many who attend these gatherings the brakes have been off for a long time, or were never applied at all

Other than Spain and the Netherlands, with France to a much lesser extent this latest wave seems to be not affecting mainland Europe, infection rates in Germany, Italy  and even Portugal are still quite subdued. Did their earlier third wave (of a different variant) give a form of immunity ? Or are they still adhering to a much stricter personal distancing regime

Looking at the UK Heat maps, the infections have swamped the north and midlands and travelled down the centre of the country to London

Listening to a health adviser on the BBC local radio, infections in Essex are very high, but admissions to hospitals very low, length of stays shorter and in our own area no one on a ventilator. Death rates also very low.

The heat map clearly shows those infected mainly in the 10 to 45 group, mainly in the younger population.
