I would suspect a few specials, just 6 in this announcement doesn’t come up to the usual run that AS do, so hopefully one that represents one going to the WR before TOPS or TOPS as 1974 will be just around the corner

I thought D423 was in the initial release list; perhaps needs the Ds painting over, as the real things were, and the MW pipes adding (sure they'll be in the detail pack).

Thanks. I don't think it was a Class 31 as I remember it looking big and beefy. Seeing the HST followed by the large diesel pulling a passenger train totally floored me. I had never seen anything like them.  I was hooked!

Probably deeafened I’d think ! I used to watch the trains at Maidenhead and reading and if it wasn’t a HST or a 117 unit, it seemed to be mainly 50s with the odd 47 and even more odd 31 ( on parcels as they didn’t have much grunt )

Pretty sure the correct one will come along with the MW pipes etc, think this is more as 1967/8 release but happy to be corrected

I wonder if it was Reading where took the train to Paddington. We were staying with step father's parents in Seaton which is on the South West coast I think of the UK. We drove to the station where we caught the train to Paddington. Reading sounds familiar (perhaps wishful thinking though.)

I think we took a Class 117 into Paddington.  I am pretty sure it was definitely not a 31 that I saw.  Sounds like it may have been a 50 or 47 going by your comments and those of othes on the forum.

I model the ECML during the late 70's/early 80's so have a licence to run these on test trains following refurbishment at Doncaster Works, but when I saw it was 50006 Neptune being modelled in blue it sealed it for me.  I will be able to re-create this scene at York on 17th October 1981.

The Deltic on the left is 55021 and is about come off the train, a special called The Minsterman, with 50006 replacing her to go onwards.  On the right is 55013 which took us home on the 18.14 to Kings Cross a little later.

R1-00717-0348.JPG

Apart from 50006 as proposed has the headlight plated over because they didn’t have enough lights initially after refurbishment so they were blanked off and fitted later. Not sure how long it was but I suspect it wasn’t long. Similarly the original version without multiple unit jumpers only existed for a short time.

I grew up with the 40s and didn’t see 50s running until the mid-late 80s. My first impression of the 50s was they sounded similar, but the turbos weren’t half as impressive. I do love the 50s, but the 40s are next level for sound effects, character and presence.

When I saw the video was shoot at the SVR thought/hoped it was 106, that said AS could compromise and do 025 as that sounded like a Hoover towards the end of its life....

At 06:19 in the announcement video Gareth says "50014 Large Logo black roof, that may be subject to change". What does that mean please?

https://youtu.be/fpIfXNMC0Pk?t=376

Good question. Does that mean the identity might change to say…50043 and what implications does that have to those who think (and want) they are getting 50014?

50014 is an interesting choice as it was the last to go through refurbishment in December 1983 and the third to be withdrawn exactly 4 years later.

50001/6/13/17/19/47 were the first six done and outshopped in plain blue livery - 50047 went LLB 6/84, 50001 8/84 and 50013 9/84, not sure about 50006/17/19 but all six in LLB by 1985 seems extremely likely. Although 50014's time in LLB was limited, 50007 lasted just 12 months (2/83 - 2/84) before its green makeover and late recipient 50017 possibly a similarly short time as it was one of the first two into toothpa......sorry I mean NSE livery 6/86. Photos of the latter pair in LLB will therefore be comparatively rare!

I notice that D423 is illustrated with data panels - this would suggest early 1969 onwards. I'm not sure when the MU equipment was fitted or how long it took to do the 48 locos requiring it (D400/1 having it from new), but on my first visit to Crewe in November 1969 none of the 50s I saw had been so equipped but these would all have had data panels by then. I'm sure they all still had D prefixes too.

50006 was LLB by Feb 1984. So the range for this model is from late 1979 to then.

By and large I think the MUs were fitted en-masse over the winter of 1969 leading up to the spring 1970 ready for the timetable change. In many cases the D prefix was dropped at the same time.

NEW ANNOUNCEMENT - We Surprise Nobody With A Nifty Class 50

2022-10-25_42.png.902cb79369d08f7c2dcdf7cc089b4012.png

Hi everyone,

Warley is back! And as is known, we like to make a bit of a splash ahead of the big Brum show. It's also been a bit of an EE theme for us, having previously announced the Deltic and the 37 around the biggest show on the calendar. So, let's complete the set; welcome to the Class 50, from Accurascale.

The Class 50 is the third and final member of our iconic English Electric (EE) six-axle trio that began with the Class 55 in 2018 and the Class 37 in 2019. With our award-winning ‘Deltic’ now in customers’ hands and the first of the much anticipated Type 3s due to leave our factory in the coming weeks, it is now time to reveal the full details of the next classic main line locomotive to join our growing roster.

It's also the most requested loco we've had for the last three years, so it's about time we obliged!

Learn About The Real 50s

Why were the 50s so popular with enthusiasts? What work have they performed during the careers, which continue to this day working on the mainline, as well as in preservation? Check out our blog which highlights the history of this much loved class of diesel locomotives by clicking here!

(Above is some 3D prints in OO and an 8mm cab print to check for shape during the CAD process)

Our Class 50 is the culmination of over three years of development that began with a 3D laser scan of No. 50017 at the Great Central Railway in 2019. Building on our growing range of diesel and electric locomotives, the EE Type 4 features their most impressive specification yet, with our ground shaking twin-speaker set up, working radiator fan, flange squeal sensor, full lighting package that includes preservation era oddballs, engine room and cab lighting with auto off feature and eight cab configurations with illuminated driver’s control desk.

The Class 50 Alliance also graciously allowed us to visit their fleet based at Kidderminster Diesel Depot on the Severn Valley Railway on several occasions, even raising No. 50044 on jacks to allow the our research team unprecedented access to the underframe!

The full gamut of changes experienced by this class have been included on our extensive tooling suite to create the definitive Class 50. This includes optional multiple working equipment, missing handrails on D400, original headcode or plated with marker lights or sealed beam lights, no headlight, blanked headlight and headlight, wind deflectors, sandbox fillers, ‘grilled’ windows on refurbished locomotives (including the first pair which retained the window grommet for several years), early or late cast bogies, dynamic brakes, roof scavenger port, NRN or GSM-R radio equipment/fittings, seven- or 12-blade radiator fan and roof walkways.

Very happy bunny and duly ordered 50017 ‘Royal Oak’, the loco I was instrumental in saving for preservation.  It also has a family connection.

haha I had this same dilemma back in 83 when choosing either a blue or L/L Lima 50 from Santa. Oh god such torture for a 13 year old 50 crank. I chose the L/L so this time I think I’ll go blue. Then when a more appropriate L/L is released I can get that.
Just need to get some overtime in at work now ☹️

Ha, had the same issue but got both...

Back in winter 82/83 the BR timesheets use to go missing on the way to Birmingham Stanier House Room 303 (from Llandudno Junction), so the Box Lad on a Tuesday used to get a day out from his duties letting 40's on freight out in front of Duffs on passengers as long as the 40s got thrashed (that was the deal😂).

After dropping off the Timesheets, I remember popping to Beatties to collect my two Lima models then getting a Priv return to Bristol Parkway as you could get a Hoover out and back with a  +10 at Parkway for a return to Brum, Spark to Crewe and Bog Unit to Chester to cover the afternoon Bangor in case it was a 40...

On one of these trips every Tuesday I remember seeing one of the most depressing sights as a young Basher, 40106 on the Crewe scrap line just South of the Station where LSL now stable their

stock, thankfully it was saved & still one of the loudest locos around, ironically based at the SVR where this afternoon's video was shoot....

@Phil Mc's credit card has just hid behind the sofa.

I can't replace the 54 H****y ones I have already !!!

( A full set of 'BR' versions, plus 007, 031, 044, & 049 as they are now. )

There are a few more duplicates I quite fancy doing though.....😅

And if Fearless ( my favourite ) was done in LL, that may well end up on my noisy layout....

With reference to the opening post, Fearless wasn't the only one with missing handrails 🙃

In seriousness, I can't wait to see these !

Cheers,

Phil.

50’s are my favourite class, as a kid I started going long haul on my school summer holidays… Growing up in the North West, 50’s werent common. They appeared on lucky saturdays. I recall day trips with my dad watching the last of the Deltics and seeing 50’s at Doncaster Works and surrounds… obviously waking up to the news of 50041, and later by 1987 seeing the first withdrawn 50 at Crewe works.

By 12-14 years I was getting independant, and started telling my parents I was cycling 4 miles away to watch various movements with my new camera.

Instead I went from Bolton, first to Chester, then Crewe, the Birmingham…

Getting a bit hooked on Hoovers I ventured further..

westbury…

and further…

Clapham jn

and eventually, the real south…Exeter.

My mother had no Idea I was going this far from home, my dad was a little suspicious but had no clue I was really going that far.

After that my 50 jollies moved with the times, Ive no idea how many times I saw 50007, it did every openday.

Coalville

Then 50019 turned engineers blue whilst 50049 went Railfreight.

Then the magic really happened with 50008/15.

I followed 50’s throughout there final years, it was saddening that 50017, withdrawn and devoid of nameplates was dragged to Manchester for Longsight open day in April 1992

Longsight 1992

But that in itself was trigger was the LO openday committee to mobilise a little later..

I continued watching, including cycling all over manchester and using a telephone relay to track the progress of a late class 50 railtour around Manchester with 50007/D400… running some 3 hours late..on June 1992…

Stockport

And the LO committee together with Pete Waterman pulled off an interesting transfer of 50008/15 to Manchester in October 1992…

This pictures below are almost certainly the last photographs of 50008/15 together, in celebrity colours on British Rail, the night before road transfer to the ELR..

This is not a railtour! It was the end and the begining… But and so that was it….

I discovered Women, went to uni, went to the US, lived across Asia. I only saw a class 50 twice in the next 10 years…

Doncaster Works openday 2003.

Would you believe I then went another 10 years…until 2013 without seeing a class 50… when returning from Peppa Pig world with my daughter, I felt a Lion roar and took a detour off the M3..

Since then Ive made up for lost time… SVR 50’s Gala, seen the return of 50015 to service, and 033. Seen 50007/49 and 008 on the mainline several times.

Bewdley

For the first time since I saw 50032 Courageous go hurtling through Clapham 30 years ago Ive wanted to see again a 50 racing at speed too and from Waterloo… theres nothing like it… unfortunately I need to wait, as last time they whimpered through..

Ive told my daughter the stories of 50’s in my youth, recently came chasing 50008 with me in April this year…

She has now seen 007,008,015,017,027,031,033,035,044,049,050

E25BB92F-1D52-4C37-8E23-C6F99D32D5F0.jpeg.2fb67d55ff1a7df9122a12b7ad5a1e7f.jpeg

London Cannon Street

And that is why 50’s are my design for life…

My collection consists of 002, 003 (Lima), 006, 007,008, 015, 021, 023, 026, 027, 031, 033, 035, 038, 043, 149, D400, D421, GBRF 007/149…

That might sound a lot… back in the 1990’s I had 35 Lima class 50’s !!!

I’m definitely in for 008 above, and 017, most likely 021.

Whilst reminiscing above, 50008/15 is a pairing I dont know if the mainline will ever see again in their celebrity liveries. A rake of mk2 NSEs as mainline railtour stock would be tremendous !

My Accurascale request… 50019 in engineers Blue would be nice to see.

in April 2017 I bought an R3471 and 3 NSE coaches from kernow… I cant believe Ive still not finished its renumber to 50032 Courageous !!!

So 50032 with its unique Blue nameplates is my next Accurascale request.
