Bachmann Summer 2023 Announcements

Bachmann Europe Plc today revealed its latest collection of new products with the launch of the Summer 2023 British Railway Announcements. The largest offering of new products via a single British Railway Announcements to date, the Summer collection showcases new models in N, OO and O scale, all of which are scheduled for release in the coming months.

 

It is N scale and the Graham Farish range that dominates the Summer British Railway Announcements. Starting with motive power and whilst it is well known that the BR Standard 5MT Steam Locomotive has been undergoing SOUND FITTED upgrades, Bachmann today confirmed that the Ivatt 2MT locomotive has undergone similar upgrades and new models of the Ivatt 2MT, including SOUND FITTED versions, will be produced this Summer. Further identities for the Standard 5MT were also revealed, along with SOUND FITTED versions of the previously announced locomotives.

 

 

New Tooling for Graham Farish this quarter comes by way of the MXA ‘Lobster’ Bogie Open Wagon, following the launch of the OO scale version in the Spring announcements. Like its larger counterpart, two versions of the N scale ‘Lobster’ will be available, one will feature traditional brake blocks and levers, whilst the
second will depict a wagon fitted with disc brakes.

Continuing the additions to the Graham Farish range of rolling stock which began in Spring with the unveiling of various new wagons, it is coaches that take centre stage this time. Both the BR Mark 1 and BR Mark 2F coach ranges see a substantial number of new additions this Summer, with numerous vehicle types catering for many of the most popular liveries across the eras, and in many cases with two different running numbers available per model.

 

 

The wagon fleet is not forgotten altogether though, and new liveries for both the TTA Tank Wagon and OBA Open Wagon appear, each produced with a choice of two running numbers,
plus new versions of the classic 16 Ton Steel Mineral Wagon, and the type that replaced them, the HAA Hopper Wagon.

In OO scale it is an all-diesel affair for Bachmann Branchline this Summer and the BR Class 20/0, the first All New Tooling project to be unveiled in a British Railway Announcements when it broke cover in 2021, is back in BR Green, BR Blue and BR Railfreight Red Stripe liveries.

 

The Class 37 is next and the extensive suite of tooling for the new Branchline Class 37 continues to be showcased with two further examples joining the range.

 

 

The popular Class 40 has been upgraded to feature a new twin speaker setup, Plux22 DCC decoder interface and new lighting control for DCC, and four new versions join the previously announced modern-day locomotive, ‘Andania’. Like ‘Andania’, with its new nose tooling that incorporates its modern adornments, new tooling has also been produced to depict the locomotives that had their headcode discs replaced with headcode boxes by the Scottish Region. Finally, the
much-requested Class 70 returns to the range as No. 70811 in Colas Rail Freight livery. Each of the Class 20s, 40s and 70 will be available with or without SOUND FITTED, whilst the Class 37s are offered in standard, SOUND FITTED or SOUND FITTED DELUXE format.

 

Bachmann Scenecraft continues to be one of the largest property developers in the world of OO scale, and new to the market today is a range of Low Relief Bay-Fronted Terrace Houses. These versatile models are available with both left- and right-hand bay windows, each with two choices of front door colour, plus a courtyard entrance that can be positioned between any of the houses. The popular range of Great Central buildings continues to grow with the new GCR Mess Room and Timber Signal Box, each available in their as-preserved, original GCR colour schemes, or in BR Midland Region colours. Alongside other new buildings and structures come further wagon loads; sand for the 13 Ton Tippler Wagons, and Steel Plate loads and Tarpaulin-covered loads that are suitable for various wagons – all in OO scale.

 

The EFE Rail range once again provides an eclectic mix of Great British Model Railways and today new tooling is unveiled for EFE Rail, with the PBA Tiger Wagons being offered in N Scale for the first time. Previously released in OO scale under the EFE Rail brand, these impressive Bogie China Clay Wagons will be produced in both the white and blue liveries of English China Clays, with weathered and pristine renditions of each livery on offer. For OO Scale, the popular ‘Pacer’ Diesel Multiple Units return in two more colour schemes, whilst the PRA four-wheel China Clay Wagons continue the China Clay theme into OO, six models are available in both early and late liveries.

 

The final new EFE Rail model unveiled today sees the brand dip its toe in the O Scale market for the first time with the Class 15 Diesel Locomotive. One of British Rail’s Pilot Scheme designs, 44 of these Type 1 Diesels were built by the Yorkshire Engine Company and the Clayton Equipment company to a British Thompson-Houston design. Eight models will be available from EFE Rail, all wearing BR Green livery like the prototypes, but with variations including all over green with or without numbers on the nose ends, with the addition of small yellow warning panels, or with full yellow ends.

A couple of interesting diesel loco releases in OO, but rather disappointed there were no further coaches or wagons from the Bachmann range announced, especially Bulleids.

Rather disappointed that the mainline hunslets in current condition haven’t been announced. Hopefully for Autumn. Rather a thin OO announcement I thought, only locos and no stock. Good to see that their class 37s don’t clash with the Accurascale releases, hopefully both companies can succeed in that space having both spent so much on their tooling suites. Bumper crop for N gauge though, great for modellers in the smaller scale.

Certainly the Green FYE Class 40 is very tempting...... way out of my region of modelling, but very tempting, especially as I have a photo taken by my father of 40106 in similar condition at Llandudno Junction.......

It would seem that priority has been given to N gauge stuff this quarter and as such there isn't production space for significant quantities of OO items (the items which have been selected are there to capitalise on recent all new tooling).

 

One hopes the focus on N this time means that the Autumn or Winter announcements will have more 00 items - the beauty of Bachmanns quarterly announcement system is that anything they are announcing now will be leaving the production lines shortly thus creating room for the next quarters products to start being made.

The 40s would be tempting for the price if they addressed the missing chassis detail, the ride height and the windscreens. I will be keeping a keen eye out for a bargain with 063 and 097 as they are both configurations I am after, but they will be having an amount of work done to them.

40039 is an interesting choice. It was amongst the first withdrawals in January 1976. Not overly impressed with the frost grills on these 40s. They look rather pronounced. Hopefully the actual models will be better.

Whilst there isn't anything in it for me, I expect there will be plenty of rejoicing about the 70! I already have one so don't need it.

Lots wanted the 70 in Colas with new radiator arrangement . Similarly in N there have been lots of cries for bread and butter coaching stock .  Both seem to have been addressed .

Thought I’d escaped yet again - until the Colas 70 which I don’t have an example of so 👍 for that.

 

Shame still no 37901 or 37510 in ROG/Europhoenix livery (to follow on from 884 and 800) before Accurascale do them!

 

Rothley signal box very nice but sadly cannot justify that one just to sit on a shelf.

I don't think there is any difference there to the previous release (other than number, the Colas logo on this release is the older one too), it's just that they only did one about 4 years ago and people were struggling to get them.

 

All Colas ones had the modified intakes, it's the FL ones that were released with and without the mods.

The pricing on some of this stuff now is just getting silly, the fact that the RRP is discounted by the suppliers makes it pointless and they must have given up trying to keep anywhere in line with competition.Horses for courses i guess.

Great to see the N gauge mk1s coming back. That is filling a big hole in the N gauge range for BR modellers. I’ve got pretty much all the coaches I need but I am very pleased to see them coming back. They are great coaches.

We all have our own perceptions of pricing for all manner of things; mostly based on historical experience but, in the main, the stuff sells out and people clamour for more so is it?

Yes but they don't discount more than 15% (in the case of Bachmann) for a period of time after release as far as I am aware. 

 

The 70 has gone up £80 in RRP (£169.99 to £249.99) since 2018 just for reference in terms of inflation.

The RRP (not discounted) for a 70 in 2018 is the same price as one can pre order an Accurascale 37 for today.

luckily I’ve already got a colas 70 so not in the market for one but I do think they’ve missed a trick in not putting the new diamond logos on it rather than the helmet

I just done understand why Bachmann don’t take advantage of the current ludicrous prices being paid for MK2a and MK2f TSO blue and grey coaches by announcing further runs of them.  There has only been one run of the 2f in blue and grey.

They cannot possibly manufacturer everything for everyone all of the time. Production schedules are planned well in advance and take into account historical sales patterns. Someone is always going to be disappointed; hell, some even make a hobby out of being so.
