I recall standing in the mud looking over the fence and seeing the cars for a few seconds. Many European circuits provide stepped banking, often made of concrete, for those that can only afford the entry ticket. This enables a better view and you can also sit down in a measure of comfort. I think hills give a circuit some character but Silverstone is almost completely flat. I made this comment before running a half marathon around it a few years ago & was told "it is more undulating that I think". It wasn't. There were a couple of very gentle inclines, but nothing more than that. Compare this to Brands Hatch, which is has some very steep drops & climbs. The advantage Silverstone has is size. After seeing Brands & Donington, I thought I knew what to expect, but was surprised by how enormous Silverstone is. The others managed to cope with a Grand Prix in the 80s & 90s but F1 has outgrown them. I know there are street circuits which have smaller facilities, but the money they generate makes up for this. They certainly help in viewing too. I suppose the British circuit history is both blessed and cursed by several being old airfields. That'll naturally give a pretty flat circuit, but they were available and handy at the time and one of the reasons we've got rather more circuits than you'd probably expect in a country the size of the UK. I mentioned sims, it's interesting that arguably the first real sim, Revs, in 1985 originally only came with Silverstone but modelled what inclines do exist. They became more apparent when extra tracks were released later, including Brands Hatch. You could see from the brake disc glow that he was on the brakes much much later. Really didn't appreciate it until we saw in on the TV when we got home. Murray called it the best opening lap he had ever seen. So glad to have seen it happen as Senna was dead within 13 months. Well technically it's the bits between Hollywood and the Old Hairpin. 😊 The long gentle right hander after Redgate is Hollywood.
