bigwordsmith
Hmm Gilbert, One can only speculate as to the reaction of the passengers on finding their butchered P2 replace boy elf HNG's finest. Nice to see you back in the saddle and conscience free! ATB Peter
The Great Bear
Whilst I do like them all especially the close up of the two A4s passing, your hopeful shot under the station roof is the pick of the bunch for me. Superb.
RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted October 27, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 27, 2014 Favour well and truly curried, Gilbert. Chicken Pathia, I think. A couple of great shots of the old girl, and the long shot under the canopy is quite superb too. I'm in favour of this train running lark, my mind cuts out the background clutter quite effectively on it's own. You do know Geordies are weaned on curry?

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted October 28, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 28, 2014 If my 'featureless end' was as skilfully created as that one I'd be happy. RMweb Premium great northern Posted October 28, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 28, 2014 I'd go out and buy more goodies if I were you Gilbert. You'll probably find that, in the long run, it's the cheaper option! You've stirred up some very old memories now. 28 pairs of shoes "I need a new wardrobe, there's no room left in this one". And then.... how much did that "toy train" cost? How do we let them get away with it? Are we men, or mice? Hang on though, I seem to remember taking a "firm stance" once...... never again. Carry on smuggling chaps.
bigwordsmith
To settle the subject of smuggling, here are some quotes that the former Mrs. Smith rotated as she felt fit... "What? This old thing? No, I've had it for ages" "Do you know that's exactly what you said the last time you saw it?" "Sometimes I'm amazed at just how little of what you see me wear sticks in your memory" "Well I don't exactly treat myself that often, and you've always said I deserve something in return for all I do. I just saved you the bother of choosing it!" "Well, my old pair was wearing out. Or hadn't you noticed? You only ever notice what I do when you think it's cost you money" "I don't know, I scrimp and save, then finally when I buy something ultra cheap in the sale, you still complain!" Please feel free to use any/all/none of these as you see fit. BTW In case they don't work I'll happily recommend the families practice at Messrs. Penningtons Manches LLP! LNER4479
Loving the latest pics GN - and another vote for the 'through the station' shot. The vague outline of people through the stygian gloom (about to be made even more gloomy by the passage of No.3) is most effective. And great work by Peter in modelling the mundane (if I can put it that way). It would have been so easy to ignore such buildings but they are all part of the scene you are creating so another piece of section of the tapestry gets woven into place... (knife and hammer excepted!)
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted November 2, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted November 2, 2014 More trains have been played with...... I mean run. As the first two or three all featured North end arrivals, I thought I'd have another look at how well that new building has filled in the background along there. First to arrive was another WD, at the start of yet another long and slow journey to Ferme Park, carrying yet more coal to pollute the capital. Over to the left, another WD's journey is nearly done, all it needs now is the road into New England yards. You have two versions of this to consider, and I'd be grateful to know which you prefer. I'm inclined to prefer the warmer tones of the second one - the "daylight" setting on my camera seems to me to give an effect which is too cold and blue, but I'd like to know what others think. As to the new building, well, it just completes the scene beautifully, no need for a backscene in that area, and with a bit of cropping, I don't even feel the need to do any photoshopping. The London bound WD having lumbered loudly through, an M&GN local from Wisbech is about to complete its journey. As soon as the passengers could be hustled off, the Ivatt reversed its stock into a carriage siding, and so a Doncaster A3 can now run through from the engine road, ready to take the 5.25pm to KX. Diamond Jubilee is recently ex works with one of the first double kylchaps to be fitted, but it didn't take long for 36A to let its stud look down at heel, unfortunately. And if I keep quiet, perhaps no-one will notice....... The A3 now waits in the Up bay, having been spared the indignity of collecting the stock from Nene sidings, that being a job for the pilot. Who put that hut in the way? Anyway, who cares about that, there's a Streak on the way. The clue was there - she was routed into Platform 6, and it is getting on for 5.30pm, so it must be the relief to the West Riding, 60700's regular turn. Another Doncaster loco in typical condition. Not sure why I included this one, as it has little merit, save for those who have missed seeing the ****** bookcases. Every now and again, I hopefully try one of these contre jour shots. I'm not sure why - as usual the strong light has bleached out both coach roofs and part of the signal. Even the artificial sky doesn't help much. And I have no idea why this one is so far out of sequence.

Frappington Jct
Ah, no there'll be a picture somewhere of a lamp just like that sitting in exactly that position as a WD arrived from the north in the 50's Edited November 2, 2014 by Frappington Jct

RMweb Premium great northern Posted November 2, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 2, 2014 Hi Gilbert Is one of your locos running around with a lamp missing or has the bobby not noticed a train passing without a tail lamp? lamp.jpg We have a bit of a mystery here. Not that I didn't notice the lamp before taking the photo - it is obligatory that i never notice such things until too late - but because a search of all the locos I can recall using lately has not revealed one with a missing lamp. Still, it has gone back into the general lamp pool, and will come in handy soon enough. I'm tempted to superglue the ****** things in position, so that they can't fall off, or move to crazy angles just before I photograph them, but I did that with a few quite a while back, and now of course I need them to work trains other than the one for which they have the code. (Just imagine a heavy sigh emoticon here please).

Not sure if you can get a white version? It is really tacky (sticky, not poor product). Happy to send some out for cost of a few stamps as I had to buy metres of the stuff some time back when I only needed a bit! Doh! Cheers. Tired duck. Is it a specialist product or a general household thing, if the latter, a trip to Trago might yield some results?

jwealleans
Tacky Wax is good for attaching removable lamps. I also stuff a small amount of blutak up the hole with a cocktail stick and that works just as well.

That had me puzzled Neil! Actually, it is there, but can't be seen when the signal is in the off position. This photo shows it. I don't know why it was not in a more central position, but prototype images show this to be correct. The other side is the same. I'm pretty certain that the weathering on the mucky duck was Dave Shakespeare's work, he did quite a few for me some years ago. What a talent we have lost.
RMweb Premium great northern Posted November 3, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 3, 2014 Hi Gilbert, Here's one for you to duplicate. The 2pm Grimsby Town stopper in Jan 1957 Cheers Tony Thanks very much Tony - that is a very interesting image, for a number of reasons. This must I think be one of the first DMU's to be tried on the E.Lincs line, a brave effort by BR I reckon to stem the tide of losses on lines such as this, There were many more high profile areas where they could have been employed, but then I suppose there was a more captive market available in those places. I'm not very good on DMU's. Can someone confirm what type this is. Class 114 I suspect? The photo also shows the very prominent chimney of the power station on the far horizon. I'm experimenting, so far unsuccessfully, with attemts to reproduce that. Then there is the lovely detail of how the signal wires were attached to the posts in the right foreground. I'm thinking about those too, and this should make it easier. All in all, a great photo, do you have more like that?
