RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted April 21 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21 Just watching the first Vera S1 Ep1, hadn't seen that one before - almost jumped when they used the frontage of the hospital I used to work in, felt really strange. Not sure why, it was used for a lot of filming back in the day when I worked there, Victorian stone frontage type place, often used as a 'Town Hall', but it really popped up for me. St Nicholas', Gosforth BTW for any north-easterners. And yes, it was one of those hospickles. No I worked there, honest. 14 1

I've seen them many times and I was severely tempted but it was ~£57 IIRC and I managed to resist. When I got home I thought I'll just have a look on the Big River where the same kit was being offered for £44 and I was unable to resist "Adding to Basket". It turned up yesterday .......... Being a cynic, in similar situations I tend to wonder how a certain seller can offer something at a substantially cheaper cost than the others, in your case I guess you found out how! It has become very popular with "active retirees". Basically doubles tennis without all the running around - the ball doesn't carry as far. There are courts everywhere now - often collocated with regular tennis courts. It is noisy. As someone who is not up to playing 'proper' tennis these days, it does look fun. Indoor pickleball centres are starting to pop up too. Sort of like a bowling alley - with pub options. Edited April 21 by Ozexpatriate

RMweb Premium Popular Post Gwiwer Posted April 21 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 21 Evening all. A busy one today. Dr SWMBO is not normally involved with ecclesiastical inflorescence but chose to make a display of “Antipodean” flowers together with miniature New Zealand and Australian flags to go on the church’s war memorial to mark ANZAC Day. Dear to her, as it is to most Aussies, not least because her father saw service with the Royal Australian Navy in the Vietnam War. I was required to drive her the very short distance to church to avoid the need to walk clutching a sizeable vase of flowers. The eucalypt leaves were the only truly Antipodean representatives; the rest were local species including bluebells from our own garden. She then pottered off for tea and cake with a church friend while I pottered off to enjoy some big green toys. I was reunited with the very bus I used to ride to and from school. I always thought it somehow appropriate that the route which passed Newlyn harbour and fish market should have buses registered with the letters COD. Two of the six survive; one was in use today providing me with a very nostalgic trip out to Mousehole and back. The lack of power steering didn’t affect the ability to turn the extremely tight corners into and out of the village. With - as has always been the case - about an inch spare either side before meeting stone walled cottages. Lots more action in town attracted very good crowds but my remaining interest was another reunion. Catching a half-cab “Lodekka” out over the moors the long way round via Lanyon Quoit I was planning to get back home just ahead of another bus making a more direct trip on a later departure. We ground up the long hill to Madron in second gear. We ground up the long hill above Madron onto the moors mostly in second but with a faultless change down to first. And we ran happily along the single track road to Morvah. Another faultless change-down had had storming Nancherrow Hill (1:7) whilst leaving no-one in doubt as to our approach to St Just. And as we pulled in there was Dr SWMBO waiting. And there, right behind, was the other bus. The very one we had been gifted the use of for our wedding 28 ½ years ago. The three of us were briefly reunited before the timetable required the buses to depart and the moment had gone. 1995 2024 And a few of the other players from today starting with 672 COD - my old school bus from 1967 passing Newlyn Harbour and the bottom of my old street, then resting in Mousehole Some properly stylish travel from Royal Blue Oldest-on-parade was down from Wiltshire Buses as I knew them boy and man. Though there was never a bus station at Penzance back in the day Changing destination - always the conductor’s job And you wait all day then three come together! Late-running 15.35, followed by 15.50 and 16.00, trips from St Just back to Penzance. Each will take a different route. 17

Popular Post iL Dottore
Good Morning All, A rather unusual weekend for me inasmuch as I spent a goodly chunk of it building a 1/50 scale architectural model of the penthouse apartment we hope to buy. Based on the original architect‘s drawing and our visit, I was able to create a good facsimile of the floor pan. As mentioned before, we are selling off Schloss iD and moving to an apartment so we need to assess what of our furniture we can/will take with us. Thus the contents of Schloss iD have been catalogued and measured and everything is being recreated in 1/50 scale (I envisage much “frank and open discussions” with Mrs iD about what gets “recycled” and what goes with us). And if this particular flat doesn’t work out, then I’ll still have our furniture in miniature for the next candidate. There has been a bit of housing bubble ‘round here as of late and one that seems to have burst. But only for parts of the country. In the place where I live there has been (and is) a spate of apartment building as, suddenly, the town has become incredibly desirable, with a concomitant knock-on effect on house and apartment prices. A small (97m2) 2 room new build flat recently was advertised for about SFr 1.1 million (about £974,000). Eye watering no doubt, but still less than the equivalent in the desirable areas of Zürich or Geneva. For me, one of the pleasurable aspects of the move is the need to upgrade the audiovisual technology that we have. Exactly recreating the library/home cinema in any new place will be unlikely, so the existing projector will be retired and replaced by a UST one (UST = Ultra Short Throw). This will provide large screen audiovisuals whilst being very unobtrusive when not in use (especially when paired with a retractable/hideable screen). One of my pet “interior design” peeves is having the TV on display in the living area - dominating the space like a semi-malignant Cyclops. And it seems that I’m not the only one to feel that way - there are more than a few YouTube “how to hide your TV” videos - both of a DIY and “look at this” nature. Of course, the perfect solution is to have a dedicated home theatre - but not everyone has a spare room to turn into a home cinema - so a UST projector and a “hide-away” screen would be a great solution. And as much as I love new, cutting edge, technology I’m still not installing their apps on my smart phone…
RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted April 22 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 22 Good moaning from a sunny but rather cool Charente. There is even a little ground frost at the top of the garden. We have had a fabulous weekend with our French guests. We've been friends since 1996 and have children the same age, it has been strange talking in French nearly all the time, but very enjoyable. They are due to set off later this morning. We went to the market yesterday morning g, we t to see a delightful chateau then had a meal near the market. As we left the restaurant an older lady at the next table, asked to speak to me and complemented me on my French. That was an unexpected event. Ttfn. RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted April 22 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 22 Morning, from a bright, breezy rock, whereas I'm anything but. 9c and 13 promised by the seaweed twirlers. Looks like a washing day 😒 pah. We've both been a little off-colour for a couple of days, achey and 'not quite right' feeling, so perhaps a bit of ol Chris's unspecified pottering will be about it for activity, bar said washing. We trimmed the low lying bits of the dreaded sycamore trees at the bottom of the garden yesterday, I think that finished us both off. Her Ladyship went to work in her car despite saying she was going to use the bike.
RMweb Premium TheQ Posted April 22 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 22 Nice to see the old Wilts and Dorset bus, the village I lived in in Wiltshire 1963-71 was served by the number 8 bus from Andover to Salisbury, it still is, occasionally used that on the way to and from school. Though that route used Routemasters back then. The observant among you will note that's a route from Hampshire to Wiltshire. Don't think I ever saw a Hants and Wilts bus. Mooring Awl. 3.5 hours, 1 hour, 2 hours , 1 hours sleep. Initially helped by pink pills, my knee is a lot better than late yesterday. Ben the I'd like out Collie, was only 15 minutes early today, he enjoyed following a trail, probably the muntjac I saw wandering around yesterday. No Wind!!! Blue welkin mostly.. Hmm 97sqm apartment = 1044 sqft This house is about 1200 sqft. So the apartment is not much smaller.. However there's about another 500sqft of mobile home and 1000sqft of garage and sheddery out there😀 Plans for today, Change hob, Work on lawnmower But first Time for breaky. 8

I used to be over here every couple of weeks for day or overnight trips and got a bit fed up of it but it's nice to be back. The flight from Singapore to Istanbul was one of the newer Turkish Airlines A350's and was superb, the seat was excellent and Turkish do in-flight food and in-flight entertainment better than most. The flight from Istanbul to Brussels got a thumbs up as despite being an Euro short haul A321 it had a business class cabin, 2+2 seats with in-flight entertainment and a full (very good) meal service, unlike most European airlines which just move the divider curtain and don't sell the middle seat for business class. Airlines which many European airlines probably look down their noses at like Vietnam Airlines and Garuda Indonesia have propoer business class cabins and in-flight service in their short haul fleets yet Lufthansa, BA, AF, KLM etc just sell economy class seats at a huge mark up and leave the middle seat empty. 13 1 2

Which is why I avoid flying those airlines - short-haul or long haul. I do make an exception for the Swiss flight ZRH -LCY - principally for the top-not ground handling they afford Business Class passengers, which more than outweighs the less than amazing seating. Back when we had Swissair (remember them?), I had to urgently get from London to Genoa - and the only flights available were in First Class with Swissair via Zürich - that was a luxurious flight indeed. Unfortunately, hubris at the top of Swissair combined with a less than competitive business class service on long haul* and a rather poor choice of airline partners** led to the company's demise. I find Swiss sorta OK, but it's clear that Swiss is the unwanted stepchild of the Lufthansa group with many of the great routings out of Switzerland (e.g. BSL-LCY) being axed or re-routed via Munich or Frankfurt. * when BA (back when it was good) had first equipped its long haul fleet with lie-flat beds and loads of amenities in business class, these were still ONLY for first class passengers on Swissair. ** One of the airlines Swissair was partnered with was SABENA! I was hoping to get some more work done in the garden today, but the overnight rain might have put paid to that, I see how the ground is when I go out later. Best get in with it, back later.
