Me too Mark. I have started working on the recordings and so far so good. 20 214's distinctive 'thumping' idle has been captured nicely. Mind you, even with some selective editing, the priming pump + cold start lasts for well over a minute! Kev.

How do you drive this with an I-pod then?

Rick took this one without me knowing, and posted it around friends with that tagline! You can see the mic wire coming in through the window to the Tascam in my pocket. The v4 sound program is now working and is now running in 20 020. Merry X-mas all. Kev.

Yes - not cheap - I enquired to L&HR about the 26 and 27 last week but they have gone to wherever - (Bo'ness I think).

It is an excellent day - did 40135 on the ELR and booked on for 37901 last year but she went down to the Watercress Line so had to cancel.

Shame about the 26 (I am in Preston with relatives near Ings) being going on it for years (an excellent railway) was tempted buying one of the cottages at the back of the Swan Hotel when it was on the market - even the diesel running at the L&HR is just the DMU - how often does the 20 stretch its legs?

Cheers

Ian

Wake up, it's thrash time! -

post-8271-0-56015300-1424535240_thumb.jpg

With not much happening to Loch Dour there has not been much to post, but the layout still gets run a couple of times a week.  And this week the 70's fleet, which has been running since Christmas has been retired and the 'tractors' are back! This is in readiness for a trip to Preston show next weekend which will herald another 'chip go round'. 37 403 is about to lose its Bachmann v4 decoder for a SWD version.  The same sounds, but hopefully more controllable than the woeful factory fitted one!   I've had several of these pass across my workbench and each seems to get worse than the last!  The v4 from 403 will then pass to 20 119 to allow its program to be upgraded.  In other ‘chopper’ news, 20 121 is in bits getting the cabside windows corrected to the deeper pattern.  After all this time I’ve finally got round to it!  I’ve also taken a delivery of replacement wheelsets from Howes, so 26 028, 27 025 and 27 207 will be losing the last of the ‘orange muck magnets’. Kev.

I don't think it is Bill. Just a 'multi-start' one.  While I was at Preston show I also bought this -

I never thought I'd buy another Lima 37 after all these years!  More of an experiment to see what I can do to improve the sound quality with a decent speaker install than a serious layout loco, but it may be kept as a 'double heading' loco. It has no weight what so ever, so will not be able to pull anything up the hill unassisted anyway. If I decide to keep her, she will get a load of mods and Shawplan bits added, and become either 37 188 or 191. Kev.

Well that didn't take long! If you want to give it a go here is how I did it -

post-8271-0-70653400-1425218358_thumb.jpg

First remove the screws from the 8-pin socket and the speaker housing/weight, which can then be 'wiggled' free of the chassis. The decoder can be unplugged and placed to one side for now. This leaves a nice big space for a 58mm x 22mm 8 ohm bass-ported speaker -

post-8271-0-37485500-1425218369_thumb.jpg

The two screw mounts and the four end triangle supports were cut out with a set of snips, and the remnants cleaned up with a wood chisel! The plastic infilled 'gap' between the tanks was cut out to add a little relief to this area, and lots of holes drilled to let the sound out -

post-8271-0-65148800-1425218395_thumb.jpg

The speaker was then fitted using 'sticky pads' facing down and the speaker wires soldered to a pair of copper clad 'pads'. The 8-pin socket can now be re-attached -

post-8271-0-29149800-1425218426_thumb.jpg

The original speaker was then removed and the wires from the decoder soldered to the two 'pads' and the decoder plugged in to connect it all up again. The speaker housing/weight can be stuck on top of the speaker with more' sticky pads' to add the weight back again, but I chose to use a block of lead to add more weight, which is badly needed. -

The result. Much better quality sounds, and more volume. And I haven't turned it up yet! Now to start playing with the cv's to 'tune it' more to my liking. Kev.

Well I have to say the 'yellow peril' (as OzzyO has christened it!) has surprised me. The recordings are good, let down by the poor speaker installation. First runs found it to be a little strange to drive as it would not drop back to idle until really low speedsteps. On perusing the supplied 'manual', I cannot find any more details on line anywhere, I had a play with the 'threshold' cv's. These decide when the program 'notches up' or notches down again.  After some fiddling I got it somewhere near, or at least usable, on Loch Dour.  The main missing setting is the inability to set the max speed, normally cv5 in a Loksound or Lenz.  This means it is still a little 'swift', but as long as I don’t take it above speed step 14(of 28) it is fine, and runs well in multi with 26 010. The biggest surprise was sticking it on three Mk1's and it romping up the hill!   It also seems to run smoother at low speeds with a train on.

If you want to give the settings a try here they are -

cv        original             changes

3              15                     50

4              15                     70

10            128                   80

210           5                      15

211           5                      15

212          30                     40

213           5                      10

214          60                     80

215           5                      10

In other news, 37 403's new SWD v4 is no more controllable than the Bachmann original!  Disappointing, but it does have more 'features'.  And 20 119 is now running with its new program on a v4.  Kev.

Hi Kev - be interested in the origins of your SWD sounds on 37403. Last October I had a Heljan 27 and a Bachmann 37/4 reblown by them and thought they were ok - after some CV changes. I have since had them re-blown by ' Biff '. I thought then they had good ' drive-ability ' and some interesting features. I have also fitted my ' Black 5 ' with their new ' U-drive ' system which sounds amazing. To be fair I've been round them all to find what best suits my requirements and those of my layout - but still think ' Biffs ' and those of Paul Chetter are the tops.

Bill.

Just a standard SWD v4 Bill, purchased from DC Kits at Preston show.  Don't get me wrong, the sounds are superb played through a 58mm x 22mm bass-reflex speaker in the tanks.  And so much better than the first version I had, which took 18 inches after departure to make any engine sounds!  If anything it is a little too 'rev-happy' now, as I cannot get it to pull into the station from a signal check without the model driver 'giving it a handful'!

I have noticed with my own programming that large changes to cv's can affect the transitions between sounds on v4 decoders, so it may be of my own making. I'll have to put the original settings back on and see if the 'thrash happy' behaviour continues. Kev.

I have altered CV5/6 on my own loco and the sounds kick in sooner plus slows it down considerably ! If I move off @ speed step 3 it will initially rev and move off and a couple of secs later will give quite a thrash - which I don't mind. If however you move off on speed step 1 or 2 and leave it there it will growl once and stay there until you move to step 4/5.

Bill.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the kind words.

Wait until you have tried one of my new generation sound projects. Controllability takes on a whole new meaning.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Kev,

I see you are dabbling with the dark side - and liking it!

Although there's not a full range of adjustment in the TTs decoders, many of the things you want to achieve are already available on F keys. In fact, there are many control functions rarely, if ever, provided on Loksound decoders.

Need to drop sound to idle? Press F7. You could use this to overcome the reluctance to notch down automatically which you highlighted.

Want to rev PM to full power without touching the throttle? F8

Need to notch up? F5.

Or notch down ? F6

It's almost like going back to the best of LokV3.5, but in this case they actually work properly. LOL.

I have to agree that the inability to regulate top speed is mildly annoying.I expect this is one of the compromises made to keep within an unfeasibly small budget.

I also agree that overall it's surprisingly good, even when not taking the cost into account, and should bring more people in, potentially creating a mainstream market for sound equipped locos in the process.

Kind regards,

Paul

I have had a play with the F8 button quite a few times Paul!  The only trouble with function button driving is teaching my fellow operators how to use them at shows. They sometimes have trouble with the auto transitions!  I look forward to you releasing a new generation class 27 project, I have the current Digitrains/Coastal one. Would it have the same recordings? Kev.
