RMweb Gold Donw Posted October 10, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2022 looks good Jerry. Word of warning if you have stay alives on locos the relay will not stop them. There is an answer to that using a broadcast zero generator but that involves electronickery even then it may not be quick enough not having tried one. Whilst the stay alive would allow a loco to continue rolling after the relay has tripped, as long as the loco has received the instruction to stop then the relay will prevent the loco from receiving a new instruction to set off. I therefore think the relay is sufficient to achieve the desired outcome. Frank 2
bécasse
You don't need a relay, you can "interlock" the traction and turntable supplies using a simple DPDT switch, furthermore if that DPDT switch has a centre-off position it will also provide an emergency stop facility which the relay won't. Eileen's Emporium sell suitable DPDTc/o sliding switches at just £ 1 each. The procedure would be to set the switch to "track", run the loco on and stop it (to negate the stay-alive facility), reset the switch to "turn" and press the button to start the turn. When the turn is complete, reset the switch again to "track" and run the loco off. Leaving the switch set to "track" facilitates shunting moves across the table safe in the knowledge that even an inadvertent touch on the button won't start a turn. 4 1
RMweb Gold queensquare Posted October 11, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 11, 2022 Gentlemen, Frank’s circuit works perfectly and does everything I require of it, why add layers of complication. Don, as Frank says, stop the loco, turn it, drive off. Nothing else needed. Stay alives in 2mm are to get you over a speck of dirt, nothing more. Backasse, why add another switch which would only result in more complication and having to drive the table off the track bus so would require a chip. Frank’s circuit is simple, elegant, works perfectly and just requires me to press a button and the table turns . Enough said. Jerry 6 2 1
RMweb Gold Not Jeremy Posted October 11, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 11, 2022 Great to see you earlier this evening and the turntable works beautifully. We could tell that Kim was really impressed too(!!) Seriously, a great piece of work and an important step towards getting Bath Queen Square running - brilliant. Simon Hi Simon, was great to see you and Charlie yesterday. I think its fair to say that Kim's enthusiasm to watch the turntable go round - again!! - is not quite as strong as mine! As you saw in the shed, moving my main modelling bench to the new extension means I can just get a complete baseboard on the old bench which will make working on them much easier. The picture shows the biggest, single board which has both the Midland Road goods yard as well as the two engine sheds on it. Im in the process of extending the rear of the board to accomodate the full size four road S&D shed. The boat road which curves round the back of the shed (front as it sits on the bench) is just a bit of Peco flexi track at the moment to give some visual idea of how it will fit. The hole for the turntable can also be seen. There are two captive bolts that ensure it is accurately, and consistantly, located. Ive now made a little cradle that the turntable can be bolted to which will be really useful for painting and finishing the model as well as when I take it out as part of my demo display. Its first outing, along with the shed scene above (not the whole board just the bit with track on ) and a selection of Midland and S&D locos, photos, plans etc is at the excellent Uckfield show this coming weekend, 15/16 October. In other news, Atso of this Parish has been volunteered, and kindly agreed, to draw and 3D print the crank columns for me. Steve has already done a superb job on the Midland water tank for me so I'm vey much looking forward to these which will allow me to finish the model. Hopefully see some of you over the weekend, Jerry

The issue is more likely to occur on an exhibition layout when you may have a driver unfamiliar with DCC and unknown locos. Don
RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted November 7, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) Not a lot of progress on the layout itself but a few interesting visitors and a new bed for my workmates. Simon Grand brought the Q6 I built for Fencehouses back having done a superb job on the weathering. He also had his B16 with him, both were totally inappropriate for the up Diner but looked great!! In other news, my wonderful next door neighbour has turned the off cut of the new workshop curtains into a bed for the animals - they seem fairly happy with it! RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted November 20, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 20, 2022 Well after all the excitement of new dog beds and my discovering the panorama feature on Kims old phone I’m afraid we are back to the mundanity of bare ply this evening. This afternoon I did the destructive part of the baseboard mods at Bath Junction which, thankfully, caused very little collateral damage. The modifications are pretty minimal and out of all proportion to the positive impact they have had- rear access to the station, four road S&D shed, all round better view. I will try to get the new bits in this week then I suppose it’s time to think about track - not before time! Jerry
RMweb Gold Not Jeremy Posted November 20, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 20, 2022 Brilliant to see you pressing ahead with your meisterproject! Looking forward to seeing Bath single line junction, I have been doing something very tedious with mis shaped bits of brass…
RMweb Gold Donw Posted November 20, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 20, 2022 No idea what and why you are doing it but its good to see progress on a layout. Unlike myself, any chance of resuming modelling after a house move has been set back by discovering a leak in the bathroom needing a total refit. RMweb Gold Popular Post queensquare Posted November 23, 2022 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted November 23, 2022 Don may not know what I’m doing 😊 but for those that are keeping up I’ve done the baseboard mods which have worked out ok. I have laid out the pointwork roughly where it will go ( along with a few bits of old Peco track) to get a feel for how it will look and I’m feeling inspired to crack on. The first picture shows the extended board and new pieces of track bed all led loosely in place. The double track at the rear is the Midland to Mangotsfield and Bristol with the S&D in the foreground. The plan is for the Midland to disappear between/behind houses etc about where it starts to curve. The second shot is Bath junction and the third looking the other way toward the station. The large space between the cardboard tube gasworks and sheds will be filled by Stothert and Pitt - principally a couple of great barns of buildings which will provide an excellent, and comparatively quick, backscrne. It can be seen that most of the pointwork for the mainline has been built with the goods and loco yards still to do. Jerry 24

RMweb Gold Not Jeremy Posted November 23, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 23, 2022 Huzzzahh!! I'd volunteer to help you ballast, but I just can't see anything that small any more... Seriously, so good to see the "bones" of Bath taking shape, with those distinctive track formations already shouting out the location. They are busy "improving" that part of the City right now, and it is becoming increasingly impossible to picture how it all used to be. I console myself with memory and my BR fire bucket rubbish bin, collected from the goods shed when everything was being finally ripped up fifty years ago. Can it really be so far away in time?
