The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

A couple photos taken on February 7 at Barrow-upon-Trent during a day of photography in the Derby/Burton area which produced seven different locomotive types (including six class 20s) - who says the modern scene is boring?

First up, 60079 on the 0918 Hope - Walsall cement

Thankfully the light improved for 60054 heading the 1040 Kingsbury - Humber empty fuel tanks

Too bleak, wet and windy for a picture but 60007 was active on 6J46 from Peak Forest to Hope St. Peakstone today. Rolled past me at about 11:00 while I was waiting for a train at Marple.

I went to Eaglescliffe to see 60007 but it turned out be Sir Nigel Gresley!

There's been some cracking shots on here recently, good to see it's not quite all DB red yet!

I haven't posted to the thread for a while, so here's one from yesterday

IMG_0463-60039-6B33-XL.jpg

60039 approaches Highworth Jn, Swindon working 6B33 Theale - Robeston, today getting a clear run through Swindon thanks to the HST it normally follows running late today 26/2/14

Good to see that more great pictures are being added to this thread! Here's a handful from me form the last few months, the Tug activity has perhaps been a little quiet down South. A noticeable exception was 60066 making it down on a car train to the docks. It didn't stick around, heading straight back to Halewood with the empties.

First up is 60045 "The Permanent Way Institution" at Frost Lane, Hythe, working 6B93 Eastleigh Yard to Fawley empty tanks. This spot has just been cleared of a load of bushes and trees to allow this view. Useful as it's a 5 min walk from home! 23.01.2014

The next day, and under much gloomier skies, 60040 "The Territorial Army Centenary" is seen at Southampton Central working 6B44 Southampton Western Docks to Eastleigh Yard. 24.01.2014

The newest shot, 60059 "Swinden Dalesman" throbs through Denchworth working 6B33 Theale to Robeston bogie tanks. 04.03.2014

There was a red 60 lurking in Llanwern Steel works yesterday when I went past on a railtour... Couldn't see the number though!

Nice pictures Andy, when ever I go to Eastleigh the 60 there doesn't seem to be doing much so haven't been able to get any good pictures.

Any idea which 10 as I personally would have the ones stored inside the diesel depot at Crewe. If they are indoors then it's better than ones left outdoors. plus I'm hoping that 60002 High Peak is brought out as it's my last one I need to see.

Mathew

Im sure the two 60s at Crewe DMD,have been moved now.

I was there when two tone grey 60092 was moved, along with EWS 60038....

Been reported that 60002 and three other 60's are outside Crewe DMD near the station at the moment, and visible. You might want to pop over and have a look...

One (no 24) turned up on the Tinsley-Immingham steel last week (8th). Not often that I've noticed one on this working, but to be fair, I don't often see it, as it seems to work only every other week on Saturdays.

Here by the canal just N of Rotherham Central:

Latest wibble on gen groups is that some of the 60's are going to Colas..........................

Where's Big Jim when you need him?

Cheers,

Mick

There have been a lot of false starts in the Wabtec 60 saga and we're getting very close to April 1... Great news if it's true though.

Evening all,

Here's what I know about the rumour and the deal with the class 60's. They were going to have 4 of the 20 that Wabtec planned in having but that went down the pan and the deal never happened. Colas sat back and waited then dealt direct with DBS and have agreed a sale of 10 class 60's from DBS the first being 60087 the former Barry Needham loco. It is currently sat at Toton in an unserviceable state and will be going through the DBS super 60 programme very soon.

Slightly off this topic but... 47815 - Great Western (the former Abertawe Landore) - That's had a recent repaint then as it's last appearance was in a slightly workworn albeit tidy (although ex First Great Western) BR 2 tone Green. Surprising as it was already one of Riviera's neater 47s in appearance, especially given the state the likes of 769 & 847 are still in.

Cheers,

Mick
