The Fall & Rise of the 60's ( was The End of the Tugs?)

You may still get to see the 60's as the local news is that it isn't GBRf, but Colas that now have the contract. More digging needed to confirm......

Cheers,

Mick

Now that is interesting. Certainly would make things a bit more colourful along the Calder Valley, as Colas don't feature this way at all at the moment.

It was reported on the Ribble Steam Railway facebook page. RSR haul the tanks into the Total depot on Preston docks from the exchange sidings.

Cheers,

Mick

A couple of recent shots of Colas 60s. Make that four pictures. Edited to add the couple from Cholsey. First one from last month.

60087 thuds past Ram Hill with 21 empty steel carriers in tow on 6V62 Tilbury Riverside - Llanwern 17/9/14

60039 crawls towards Cholsey following close behind a stopping unit working 6B33 Theale - Margam 20/9/14

60087 opens up as the driver accelerates towards Cholsey working 6V62 Tilbury Riverside - Llanwern 20/9/14

Finally one from today

IMG_2382-60021-6Z62-XL.jpg

60021 rumbles past a wet Hullavington, the Mirrlees - Blackstone 8MB275T echoing nicely through the cutting. The loco had a lengthy set of wagons in tow here, working 6Z62 Tilbury Riverside - Llanwern, a STP working after Saturday's 6V62 was cancelled. Despite the awful conditions, I just had to get out today for some fresh air (oh and to scratch another tug off the list...), having spent the last three weeks virtually solid on the sofa and in bed. 13/10/14

Ticking over at Toton Depot yesterday afternoon, 076 I presume, it seemed to be keeping a couple of fitters entertained, running from one cab to the other !!

Cheers,

Phil.

Thats an intriguing engineers(?) wagon in the background on what looks like a container flat, any idea of what it is?

It's a YSA "power wagon". The container houses equipment to provide services to the likes of a HOBC - high output ballast cleaner. or TRT - track relaying train

Thanks for that, I noticed that there is at least three minor variations between different vehicles, certainly a case for getting plenty of prototype photographs.

There's usually wagons from one or both of the trains mentioned by Mick, in the sidings there during the day. Usually a couple of Freightliner 66's too. Was 66539 and 66607 yesterday.

539 + some more of the 'yellow stuff' in the background, behind a sorry looking 60048.

Cheers,

Phil.

What was the loco to the left? Looks like another 60.

A slight twist on the thread title, we have 'Start of the Tugs'. Here are some photos I took ouside the Brush Works at Loughborough on a miserable wet day Sunday 27th July 1991. I was lucky in that all locos had their front numbers painted on as most did not have their side numbers..

Excellent photos Flamingo, they looked best in sector livery, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing them.

A few recent ones from me, including an unexpected appearance from 'Steadfast' - with a nice rusty set of KEAs in tow to boot!

IMG_2413-60021-6V62-XL.jpg

60021 thuds up the gradient at Callow Hill with a short 6V62 Tilbury Riverside - Llanwern in tow 18/10/14

IMG_2436-60001-6C54-XL.jpg

60001 makes light work of 6C54 Oxford Banbury Road - Westbury, running along the embankment east of Langley Burrell. This was a sight I wondered whether I'd see again, this being the first time a class 60 had worked a Mendip stone working for a long while, believed to be over a year. The 1960s signal gantry is visible here, with the new signals that will replace it in place, at present with bagged over heads, to allow for the forthcoming electrification 27/10/14

Finally a shot that's opened up with electrification related bush clearance, weather today was miserable (ISO1250, F3.5 1/500 plus a bit of RAW processing) but I fancied some fresh air.

IMG_2448-60021-6V62-XL.jpg

60021 appears from the misty autumn drizzle in very dull conditions at Pig Lane, Hullavington working 6V62 Tilbury - Llanwern, accelerating after a pause in Hullavington loop 29/10/14
