RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 1, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 1, 2012 And from this June in Andermatt, they do protective clothing differently in Switzerland. I saw many of these natty Alpine hats in a combo with the orange gear. They certainly keep the sleet from going down the back of the neck. Felt hats used to be standard issue for SBB Shunters in Switzerland - no bump caps for them!

RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted October 5, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2012 SNIP I bet nobody asked what you were doing SNIP on the Ratty! Ahem. I have a Ratty story. In, I think, 1960, our skool Scout Troop (19th Dorking - and no, I was never a scout) went to camp at Boot, which I think is rather close to the Ratty. Early one morning, so the story goes, two or three small boys left their tents early and raided the Quartermaster's Store for a pound of butter, which they then applied liberally to the rails on the nearby bank. I think the little train took half an hour longer than usual on its initial trip that morning......
RMweb Gold Trevellan Posted October 5, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2012 Are you sure that's Alton ground frame? It looks like someone's back garden... Here's another people picture from my collection. This one dates from the second half of 1979 and shows Sunday track renewals taking place at Hertford North. The traditional look-out was clearly enjoying a brief moment of contemplation. His sports jacket was de rigueur at the time and provides an interesting contrast to the wall-to-wall orange boiler suits seen nowadays.
