Great British Locomotives

When the series was running I had an agonising job trying to get copies of mags and the relevant models direct from the publishers - massive delays, numerous phone calls, complaints answered in publishing house procedural jargon totally meaningless to me. Beware.

This prompted me to have a quick look. There do seem to be GBL listed, some at reasonable prices.

I've no connection with any of these, but for instance:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/great-british-locomotives-collection-X11-5-still-with-mags-all-still-boxes/162148243252?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D37567%26meid%3D184c9f262f8a4338946ec5694adf1a50%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D122048455846

And the popular T9:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Great-British-Locomotives-LSWR-Greyhound-4-4-0-locomotive-1-of-6-listed-/122048455846?hash=item1c6aa7a4a6:g:9vYAAOSwNKRXi-QK

And the "similar items" bar pointed to some more .

I did buy one GBL direct from Amercom ok,  but this has reminded me that I did have trouble with another order that didn't turn up.

Thanks for this, prompted me to search eBay too and now have a Caledonian Single on the way for a tenner :)

My local model shop has just been given most of the models if anyone wants some I would advise giving him a ring on 01323722026 (no connection, just a customer) as he will probably be getting rid of them cheaper than eBay

And it's turned up today. Found an original pickup plate on eBay for less than a fiver too - my childhood 123 will be getting a makeover :)

G'day, RedgateModels,

I wish you well with your makeover of CR123. I had fun with mine (described here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/102076-motorisation-of-gbl-caledonian-single-and-upgrading-of-her-coaches/)and hope you achieve as much satisfaction.

I've posted a link to my project as there is a list of the paints and parts I had to source for my model.

I look forward to seeing your results.

Regards,

Rob

I noticed lots of this models (i didn't look to see which ones individually) on a secondhand railway stand at a show at the weekend, they were in the plastic outer but missing the magazines and BIG cardboard back piece.

He was Wanting £10 each for them!!!!

I've seen the magazines alone (I think) for £34.99 on ebay...

I am planning to sell most of my models, various reasons. All have been taken out of packaging, so best suited to someone wanting them to convert. I am not sure why I actually contintued collecting them, possibly because I had thought of either building a model scapyard(!) or a display cabineet in my house in France(now planning to sellup in France). I am also more interested in building something in HO , except for the few r2r OO models I stillhave. Part of my 3D printing project.

Any update on this project Gary?

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately nothing at the moment had a bad few weeks with various family members having health issues and I'm trying to build up enough projects to justify putting a sheet of transfer paper through the printer.

My summers are spent virtually "modelling free " in France but here is another A2/3, again using the GBL A2 with some resin parts on a Hornby Brit chassis. Not for the purists....

G'day Gents

Like the Thompson A2/3 Watling Street, if you don't mind, what valve gear did you use, as I will be building 'Watling St to, I have everything except the valve gear.

Thanks, manna

Hi Manna. I used Hornby A1 valve gear and cylinders for this as they are readily available as spares. with a couple of odds and ends from the scrap box. I used the latest Brit chassis, mainly because I had one. As a result, the driving wheels are incorrect, though its been suggested B1 drivers could be substituted, The A1 con rod needed shortening, - I cut a piece out and soldered it and that looks ok when weathered, Other bits need amending too, but in the great scheme of LNER Walshaerts, it's not the most difficult task. The A1 cylinder block is too puny and I'll bulk it out when I get back home ,

Having seen your other efforts, I don't see why you would have any problems, I imagine it depends on what chassis you are using. Feel free to pm me if that will help.

G'day Rowanj.

I have a Brit chassis, just chassis and wheels, I have a motor, without a worm gear, but I can fix that, at least I know where to start with the valve gear, I did think of using L1 valve gear, but yours looks good. Thank you.

Hi all,

Well I have finally done something with one of the GBL models, Well part of one anyway. i took a very careworn and delapadated 1970's Hornby Flying Scotsman and turned it into this. it has come out quite nicely IMHO. May not be quite upto the standards I have seen here but it is not bad. It was Rowanj's fault, i saw the A1 above and thought I must do something....... :)

Sorry the pictures have turned out a bit fuzzy for some reason.

Hi all,

Well I am working on another BR A3 pacific. This time it is 60036 Colombo. Will post pictures when i have finished it. It is yet another cheap buy for spares and repairs. Cost me a whole £12.00. Looks pretty good to me.

Who said you cannot teach an old dog new tricks........  :)

I am still looking forwards to seeing more pictures of Blue lightnings finished Gladstone.

Hi all,

Well after a bit of a disaster when I sprayed the engine with matt varnish. The black paint bubbles and started tp peel off. I stripped and repainted the engine, Well here it is anyway a very dirty and hardworked BR A3 colombo. All in all I believe I managed a minor miricle with these 2 A3's. The engines were really only destined for scrapping. Now they look better to me than when the were origionally made.Moral of the story is never throw anything away because it is old. It may just one day become useful. Well all in all with the cost of both engines and the transferes they cost me the princely sum of £25.00.Here are some piccy's with the Flying Fox in the background.

Hi all,

Can any one tell me. On the GBL Flying Scotsman's smoke deflectors there is a small brass plate each side. Was this just for the Flying Scotsman or did all A3's with the German style smoke deflectors carry this plate. If it was only for the Flying Scotsman i will have to remove it from the Flying Fox.

Hi all,

Well after hours of viewing pictures of A3's I have come to the conclusion that it was only the Flying Scotsman that had the plates on the deflectors. And that they were put there after it had been restored and not run by BR. So they have to go. If any one has any info contrary to this I would be interested to see it.

Many thanks.
