RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted August 2, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2014 So much for sticking to a winning formula :0 ( Don't worry I'm planning on getting "my" Manor out tomorrow and it won't be lined black with red plates either.
cary hill
We walked up to Waterside along the cliffs and there were other cases of lineside fires along there too. I was initially surprised to see that you didn't make it to Broadsands, but I suppose the recent live firing exercises may have put you off: Seems a bit OTT to me as means of clearing a couple of squirrels and a bat from the beach.
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted August 2, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2014 Talking of the mentioned lineside fires and it was noted they weren't easily accessed by the fire brigade in some cases.Of course in the old days the railways had someone of their own available to put them out. RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted August 3, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2014 Today is Manor Sunday complete with stunning scenery that I can't compete with.Enjoy some holiday photos overlooking Kingswear station. No Torquay Gas works coal trains, cranes or a turntable in sight. When she sounded her whistle the sound was superb and I thought afterwards what a great ringtone for my phone that would be.The rest of my family thought I was sad. Not all coach roofs are perfect.

Was that some fat ******d who had eaten one too many pasties and drunk too many Doom bars and then lay in the sun to ferment? Wasn't one of the DITD gang by any chance? Love that Gay Class MTB. I'm saying no more............................. If you look back to post #5276 that is also Kingsbridge Station; changed a bit hasn't it? P
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted August 3, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2014 Good to see the Kingswear pics, TVM. The level crossing in the first couple is where I stood with a trio of senior local RMwebbers about 15 months ago, snapping a blue A4 on its way back from a jaunt. I anticipate being in this part of the world a little more often in future, if present plans fructify. A nice thought!
RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted August 3, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2014 Did you manage to get a ride on the big wheel in Torquay Rob ? I'm suprised the MTB is not moored at Brighton Marina this week. I don't do heights Bob as the kids will testify with Smeatons Tower on the Hoe in Plymouth ! cary hill
Breaking news ........ "Finching sisters clinch deal to acquire a third beach hut on behalf of the ANTB Beach and Seawall Amenities Improvement Scheme (1947) Sub Committee" (photo courtesy of the Torquay Herald Express) "Flora and Minnie Finching supervising the removal of the last waste paper from the former Wartime Paignton Paper Salvage Depot. Also in the photograph are Septimus Smith, who will be transporting the beach hut to the Seawall using his recently acquired ex-Army lorry, and Arthur Chandler, Managing Director of the Paignton Waste Paper Company (1945), now in liquidation." Flora Finching was quoted as saying "We are thrilled to have acquired such an historically significant beach hut on behalf of the Commitee, and it takes us one step closer to our vision of how the ANTB Seawall will look when the landscaping is completed and the floodlights are installed later this year." RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted August 3, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2014 Rob, Please excuse my ignorance but the last picture - what are the things hanging on the rack used for? Thanks, Dave Fire (as in firebox) and ashpan cleaning Dave. The long shovels are for digging out ash and clinker from the firebox (also live coals for fire raising), various darts for breaking up clinker and at least one long ashpan rake (you get down into the pit and rake the ash from the bottom of the ashpan into the pit; hopper ashpans are a wonderful thing hence some preserved GW engines which do a lot of work have had them fitted). RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted August 3, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 3, 2014 LT pannier spotted again at the SDR on the way home yesterday.I had hoped to catch 1369 to take some photos for Chris [spams] but it was tucked away out of view. Am I allowed a diesel shunter.
cary hill
LT pannier spotted again at the SDR on the way home yesterday. I must admit to being slightly disappointed that the LT liveried pannier was on duty when we travelled the line in early June. Even SWMBO was moved to observe "aren't the steam engines here usually green?". I know the livery is authentic and it's supposed to be celebrating the 150th Anniversary of London Transport and all that, but it seems a bit naff celebrating that in rural South Devon. I reckon I could just make the 16.30 ex Chinnor - but it is harvest time so that might not work so maybe a weekday jaunt?

The livery doesn't sit well with chocolate and cream coaches in my opinion.Having said that it's the owners decision on livery.. Meanwhile I've finished fitting some vacuum pipes to my tankers and taken the tension lock couplings off.Don't they look better for it too.
