RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted October 28, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 28, 2015 60s are the comfiest and 70s are quite nice (when they are not moving and bouncing around!) 37s are not comfy at all, 47s are ok, 66s big cab end are best for sleeping on I discovered this morning that my job out of bristol was cancelled so i decided to head home as i could get back there in the morning by train should tomorrows job run, anyway on the M5 just past worcester i got a call asking me to go to chirk to collect 60047 and 60095 to take to toton after 095 failed at hellifield last night, as i was heading in the right direction it was no biggie so off i went Yet another 'international rescue' mission, thinking of changing my name to 'jim scott tracey'! First stop out of chirk, shrewsbury, had to follow a stopper to wolves from there I then got stuck in traffic coming off the sutton park line, 37s on the flasks coming the other way while i sat at a red light Then it was a slow trundle to toton, following the boston steel all the way from kingsbury jn, by the time i got to trent the sun aas beginning to go down, anothe rpic at a red light (being as i was sat there for 15 mins!) And into toton via the north yard where i left 60095 on the fuel road It should have been a nice little run back to chirk with 60047 but they couldnt get a path back so ive had to leave it there and go to a hotel for the night in nottingham as i was up to my hours for today It works out nice anyway as its looking like tomorrows job is 37057 from derby to tyseley to collect a test train then back to bristol via banbury/didcot/swindon etc, i was hoping to tag the 60 to the rear of the consist to get it towards canton but that was a non starter!

lmsforever
About uncomfortable seats today I went to town by bus and as I left the bus station saw a driver waiting to take over his next bus carrying a large red pillow I was tempted to ask what his problem was but thought better of it! You have had a busy day Jim good photos like the last one.
RMweb Gold BoD Posted October 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 29, 2015 37s are not comfy at all, What is the view like from a 37? Quite limited I would guess. I really must make an effort to get in one and have a look for myself.
RMweb Gold Popular Post big jim Posted October 29, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted October 29, 2015 the view is awful! so some from the last few days from the proper camera bristol toton, waiting to leave for chirk, it ended up being cancelled so i got a hotel in nottingham for the night and back there this morning to pick it up again this time off to derby first to collect 37057 from the RTC, bet its been a while since a 60 was on there! turned in the station so the 37 was leading of course i had to do the job right and put the correct headcode on it and away to saltley, stopped at whitacre Jn for a bit at saltley i uncoupled the 60 and headed off solo to tyseley where the 37 was going on the test train and ultimatly bristol, the 60 left saltley and headed to cardiff where it has gone on the baglan logs arriving into tyseley i then caught a train into birmingham and called into my old depot at moor st, 68008 arrived in while i was there over to new St, looking very impressive now and back to chirk for my van before finally getting home after 5 days away

D854_Tiger
The Whitacre Junction to Kingsbury Junction line (part of the original B&DJ Railway is my local railway. Back in the 1990s, whilst container clearance work was taking place on the direct route to Water Orton we briefly became the main line with Peak hauled expresses passing by. Nowadays, only a couple of (late evening) booked passenger workings use this line for route familiarisation. During the mornings, we can get two of three freights an hour, round the loop, although it goes a bit quite in the afternoon, evenings and the weekends. We even get stuff coming round in the middle of the night now, though not sure why they need to go that way then. In the bad old days, I think it was the 1980s recession, a railwayman neighbour informed me that there was going to be a period of no booked workings over the line, with a view to closure. It lasted around two years, the line was kept available to the signallers, on an as required basis, but I've no idea how that translated to actual numbers of workings and I certainly very rarely saw or heard anything coming round. Anyway, they must have decided they couldn't do without the railway and ever since we've gone from very light use (two or three a day) to the situation we have now where it can get quite busy. railsquid
Tragically I have an inordinate number of brain cells devoted to changes in BR's motive power fleet during the 1980s. I'm sure they could be put to better use, just not sure what...

Gareth 73
The Whitacre Junction to Kingsbury Junction line (part of the original B&DJ Railway is my local railway. There are times these days we couldnt manage the service to derby with out the slows. We quite often have a class 6 waiting on the slows to follow a passenger with a class 4 coming main line to follow the 6 from kingsbury. Also if a passenger service is late from derby we can regulate via the slows so we can get the late in front of on time or on time in front of late which ever control want to get. As to late night use there are some services booked for route knowledge also if they are early and we have a line block on fast the slows r a good bet. There are also certain services from/to derby that get relief at coleshill so have no choice but to use slows. I will say when im on panel and i think i can get away with it, i beast stuff mainline (6m08 at nite is a fav as only going to washwood) with the flashing aspects onto park or down goods at waterorton it usualy works lol

WCML100
The 73 is interesting, is the caledonian sleeper trying to get an example of every BR class possible into their fleet? Aha
clachnaharry
Are the Caledonian sleeper 73s still fitted with third rail pick ups or are they purely diesel powered? If, 30 years ago, someone had speculated that 73s would be in regular use in 2016 pulling sleepers from Fort William, they would have been labelled as insane!
