The National Festival of Railway Modelling 2013

BRMExhibitions

Who could possibly begrudge the BCB crew a drink? IMHO they deserve every mouthful, so there.

I visited the show yesterday.  Fortunately the advance queue was admitted just before the heavens opened.  The exhibition guide was a significant improvement on the tablecloth we had last year.

It is always a pleasure to view New Hey, its perpetrator and his slaves  I meant to spend longer looking at Summat Colliery and did not quite reach Happisburgh Goods but I am familiar with both.  Other layouts were available.  Obviously BCB was the main attraction and seemed to be behaving itself [mostly] when I was nearby.

Trade support was well mixed.  I did not buy everything on my [short] list but it matters little.  The unfortunately named S&M Tools triggered all sorts of thoughts, most of them quite unseemly.

Fortunately the line-up of demonstrators was not as sparse as the lack of reference to them on the show website implied.  I managed to miss the demos of baseboard lighting and electric grass but I'm sure there will be other opportunities to see them.  I was quite taken by the wooden coaches in 7mm shown by a gentleman whose name escapes me.  The idea of putting BRM staff to work at the demo tables would have worked better if they had not also been given other duties.  The group photo of them was likened by some to a boy band.  More unseemly thoughts!

Quite why the sign "coffee bar" was displayed above the Bachmann stand is a mystery.  Fortunately alternative suppllers were close at hand  and after my experience at Newark it is to the credit of those dispensing tea that they put the teabag into the cup before adding the water.  There's hope for us all.

Can anyone tell me what is happening with DRM.II know he is a Trader at Peterborough this weekend but I  understand that Mike Russell is on the verge of retiring and will no longer be selling his superb kits. However he  will still be offering a bespoke  building service of locomotives from his kits. Can anyone confirm or deny this information. He desrves to have a long retirement after the dreadful health problems he has experienced over the years. Good Luck buddy either way.

Regards,Derek.

Very good exhibition indeed. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and nice to see some very friendly RMweb faces.

Good mix layouts that were all of a very good quality.

BUT......why build a beautiful Exbn layout, and spoil it by some poor operating. Trains stopping in stations and all passengers ending up in the first coach.......trains departing 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds...?!?!

Black Country Blues an example of quality running with realistic speeds, acceleration and deceleration.....well done.

Fortunately only one layout demonstrating what would describe as poor running of the "get the move as quickly as possible type".

Otherwise, well done to all .

My first time at the Peterborough show today & thoroughly enjoyed it. Found it a very relaxing atmosphere compared to some & most of the exhibitors I spoke to were very friendly and only too happy to stop & chat. It was also nice to be able to have a good look round without the usual "rucksack in your face"!

Some good layouts on display today, although I thought it may have been a bit "top heavy" trader wise versus layouts but that's just my option. Thanks for a great day, I'll be back next year.

I had a chat with Mike today Derek. He is indeed retiring, and will be limiting himself to offering kit building commissions. Unfortunately he is still having health problems, but as we agreed, considering his diagnosis in 1998 he has done very well to still be with us.

Well I thought the show was brilliant, it was the first time I had seen BCB and the way the background had been printed so that the working part of the layout was highlighted was extremely effective, almost a 3D effect. Other layout that impressed was the tram layout "Crickey". Not so sure about the huge layout called "Dorehill St Stevens". Plenty of operators fiddling around with keyboards, but not much happening the several times when I looked, not one train had a 'clear run' through the main station. Must have taken many years to get the layout done though.

For me, you can never have enough diverse traders, where else can you purchase items that your 'local' model shop does not stock. My wallet is certainly suffering this morning anyway!  Roll on next year.

Mixed feelings about the show. As you entered there was no wow factor and an appearance of empty space where as before all the specialist and smaller traders were in there. A much better solution as it gave the feeling of a proper model railway exhibition on entry. Also if I recall there where often a couple of really good quality smaller layouts in there as well and again it added to the general we are at an Exhibition feeling.
