basically if you have the throttle open (as an example speed step 25 on a lenz 100) so its chuffing then shut it back to just rod clank (say speed step 22) and then open it back up by a couple of notches (speed step 23-24) it will give the draincock hiss, if you then open it up futher the draincock sounds shut and the exhaust it will give a deeper "bark" (eg back up to 28)

its not a function its built into the program, most howes steam chips do it now or if not bryan is slowly updating his progrmas to include it

Thanks Jim, I understand it now. The Tornado Chip looks very temping as it has a far more authentic chime whisle than that available on the SWD A4 supplied chip especially so when on on the move. Im assuming that the intermittent discharge of the Drain cocks will eventually be added to the Tornado chip but I can check that out with Howes when I eventally get around to ordering one

Thanks for the info much appriciated

Bob

HI All and particularly to Big Jim. When you put the sound clip of the ROD on I thought that the recording sounded good enough to buy. I know my comments and those that you passed to Brian and the "observations" (they weren't criticisims) from the down load I know "where" right. There is a major difference to hearing the chip in a loco in front of you!

There is a lot of quieter sounds that are there but are not picked up on the Youtube recording and they really do sound absolutly fantastic. I say that once the speaker is installed properly, my job tonight to make a better enclosure (or change to a bass enhanced) which infills the "splashers" in the tender chassis, will improve the sound efficiency as well as clarity. The loco will be good if not slightly better than the fantastic Super D recording.

So after all this ramble a big thanks to "big Jim" to upload the information, and also a masive thank you to Brian for bringing the product to the market!

Well, Doug didn't get that enclosure done last night, largely due to my talking to him on the phone when he "should" have been modelling!

I have to agree with Doug's assessment of the ROD sounds, having now had a litle play with his ROD on my layout leftovers. It really is a lovely sound package, Bryan has excelled himself. As Doug said, the speaker installation leaves the sound a little tinny at the moment but a few minutes work with some plasticard, glue and Blu-Tac should see a major improvement in the output quality - he may well have done that by now, even as I type this!

As an aside to the install of the sound in the ROD. I have changed the speaker to be a base enhanced 40mm x 20 (or there abouts) sound is improved in that the 'tinny' sound has droped to almost gone. The challange in installing is you have to remove the mounting for the 21 pin decoder and thin down as much as you dare the coal space. (I ended up with a slight over cut, so it won't hold water :( ) So in the end the speaker just fits in the longtudial direction to the front of the tender with the decoder/ plug loose above the speaker.

Sounds good, Doug (oh, a pun!). Does the coal space really have to hold water? Just tell that fireman not to hose the coal down! ;)

I'll look forward to hearing it soon - probably on Saturday week at the exhibition. cool.gif

Another member (thanks, Kev) has alerted me to the fact that my links to photobucket seem to have failed. I'm not sure why this has happened but it also applies on another forum I'm a member of. I will try to upload all the vids to YouTube (as soon as I can remember my password!) and redirect the links to there, although this may take a bit of time to get up and working properly. Please be patient with me as I have been a bit busy of late.

couple more videos from me, nothing new but these pair hadn't been run on bobs layout before, the other advantage being they are recorded on the new camcorder, there is a lot of noise from the wheels of the wagon the camera is sat on but they vids have come out very well

first up my chiltern 165 with the usual howes sounds the soundchip does not step down at 50mph so it seems to scream round the layout as it is using the original howes 158 as a basis for the sounds, hopefully bryan will be able to adjust it when i visit next

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu055ZB21A4

next up the Bachmann 150/2 with howes sounds as usual, unfortunatly bobs contorller only goes up to 12 functions and my "station announcement" recordings are higher up, this time the train stops in the station (we forgot to take the tools off the platform!) to demonstrate the door sounds etc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z41dEoHQm6A

i should all being well have a couple more chips tomorrow, a class 37/4 and a class 67, once i get them i'll post a couple of vids up here

Neil Wood and I did some recordings on Saturday, of his Voyager and GNER HSt, plus my classes 150, 158 and 4CEP. I have still to edit mine into something presentable before uploading. this time I'm going to try uploading to YouTube rather than my usual Photobucket. If successful, I'll upload all the previous ones to there and amend the broken links in my earlier posts.

As they say ... watch this space! :D
