Washout at Dawlish

Recommended Posts

I reckon he has 4 of those buzzy whirly thingjes strapped on his chair providing lift enabling site visits. Yes, well done Granitechops.

Well

Nah, too much dust,

I have done several modifications to

my fleet  of 2nd hand bargain motive power ( all 2-2-0 )

but the next pie in the sky was a forklift attatchment to the front of the red Shoprider!!

But thanks for the compliments

thanks

but looking at the webcam pic it looks like side hatches closed, off rather  than blanked off windows

did it have another life inbetween?

No, I think it went from being a passenger coach to a departmental vehicle.

A technical question - how do you take screenshots off the webcam? I've been looking at this site and the Network Rail one for several weeks, I can right click save as on the latter but not this one. Could someone embarrass me with my lack of technical knowledge and explain how simple it is?

I use the "Prt Scrn" keyboard button and paste it in to Word.  I then right click the picture, select "Save as Picture" and save it in my chosen computer folder as a jpeg, which can be uploaded to RMweb.

Looking at Roundhouse's 2nd pic of the barrow crossing

Just reminded me

I dont know what was there before

But

when I returned from my short trip up the line Friday

I had to use that crossing to get back to the Up platform where the ramp exit is

Very safe procedure, only available though when station manned

Both gates at top of ramp are padlocked

when I wanted to cross there was also a woman with buggy on the up platform waiting to cross.

Procedure

Attendant was on the up platform

he made her wait top side of her gate while he unlocked both gates, escorted me over

then escorted her over, then relocked both gates

I initially wondered why he did not escort her over while he came over the first time

Then I realised that if he did that,

he would have to turn his back on her,

leaving her at the bottom of the ramp with the buggy, while he unlocked my gate,

leaving the possibility of her suddenly returning to the other side if she had forgotten something,

or if she had a toddler beside her, him/her straying back onto the track

this way seems fail safe

well though out, I thought,

I imagine, some might find it a bit pedantic,

Better that than dead or injured

Edit

PS what time were those station pics taken, to get it so deserted, Late afternoon?

Print Screen isn't an option for us Mac users.  We can still get screen grabs using Command+Shift+3 (for the entire screen) or for the full range of options read this page

http://guides.macrumors.com/Taking_Screenshots_in_Mac_OS_X

Far simpler to do an image grab in Preview - then you can take only the exact bit you want.

Orange Army

just a thought to keep in mind

tecknically its not one army

but several regiments

each contractor has its own army,

usually with its own logo on the back

every one on site has to wear hi vis,

even the press had to be in orange

as did the Secretary for State when he walked down the site

I only ever saw the whole time 2 persons not using Hi vis,

& that was in the compound at Dawlish Station

No idea why.

I think we ought to congratulate the media for once in their coverage of this episode. For once they seem to recognise the importance of the railway network to the community as a whole and managed to stop their usual gripe of "overcrowding" "late" "inefficient" (insert other negatives as required) trains.

All we need to do now is educate them that it's Dawlish RAILWAY station not train station...but that was on another thread! Where's Ben Ando when you need him? :sungum:

After our travels yesterday FGW staff seemed very up beat, no doubt a big relief that things are getting back to normal.

The one downside that non of the staff should put up with is abuse that we saw at a Topsham last night when two blokes got off as we were getting on and one of the. Started having a go at the driver for not sending the guard through the train as it didn't stop on request where they wanted to get off. This bloke then started hitting the drivers window.

Looks like the 47s which delivered the Mk3 to Laira yesterday will be heading back through Dawlish today, though strangely now at 75mph rather than 90.

"Heritage" locos are a bit light on brake force, so have to run at lower speeds when light or when hauling a short train than when hauling a full-length train.

With regard to roundhouse's post above, sadly, that's one of the (many) reasons I hung up my hi-vis years ago. Front-line staff (not just traincrew) have to deal with far too much antisocial behaviour. Late shifts were never particularly fun, especially in my old neck of the woods.

Interesting that when the footbridge was replaced a few months back step-free access wasn't provided.  Was this because of conservation issues, or because the steps weren't replaced, or some other reason?

I know how you feel. There are always members of society that feel the world should revolve around them. The Exeter drivers are well used to that kind of thing around Exeter. Royal Oak of this parish is an Exeter driver and I don't doubt he'd say the same, straight over the head!

If I remember right, Topsham is equipped with CCTV?

All light loco's are restricted to 75 mph Edwin.

Unless you work for DCR ofcourse and then you just do what ya like and to hell with the rule book. :jester:

I think you'd be very hard pushed to be able to include a elevator with the attendant power plant on the seaward side of the footbridge. This is not only from the space and foundation angle but also from the corrosive nature of the sea when, IIRC, seems to have had something to do with the recent lack of trains on this section.

This is quite apart from any listing or aesthetics.

We get our fair share of "characters" and challenging behaviour even in our libraries..........

Sunday is a good time for reflection and now that Dawlish and points west are reconnected again to the outside world I'd like to say a big "Thank you" to those who have provided insight and information for us all.

We have been very lucky here to have had a number of those actually working on site willing to share their knowledge with us. It's heartening to see those with a management role donning the orange overalls, along with their colleagues. Sometimes it's a balancing act with those "in the know" as to what information to provide, but I've been impressed by the openness of Network Rail and the professionalism of those RMweb members providing it.

Thank you, one and all.

I drove buses around the south-western extremities based on St. Ives for a fair number of years.  We too had our share of antisocial behaviour and with the driver always the only member of staff on duty after 6pm.  If you broke down you called Camborne and hoped there was someone still there.  If you got a "ruff 'un" you were on your own.  A disarming smile and a steely nerve usually sorted things out (and sometimes with assistance from the regular late night passengers) and I'm pleased to report I never sustained any injury in the line of duty caused by another person's action or attitude.  I can only think of one theft of money and one assault occasioning lost work time among my colleagues in all my years there as well.

Antisocial behaviour can occur anywhere but seems to be more prevalent in and around our major cities.  I wouldn't want to drive big red buses for example but kudos to those who keep places like London moving 24/7 no matter what.

Now back to the story line and bookings aren't yet open for my next trips south-west but I have the accommodation booked and paid for so unless more untoward events occur between now and August I can look forward to a celebration of the Orange Army's achievements in the wee small hours as 10532 (other sleeping cars are available but that's the one I usually seem to get) rolls across what used to be a large hole in the sea wall.  And a week later I can enjoy the view in daylight though perhaps not the comfort in a refurbished HST "airline" seat!

Here we go again.

Why can't you just stick to comments relevant to the topic without raising that old chestnut? :nono:
