montyburns56
I know this is slightly OT, but I watched a new episode of the US sitcom Young Sheldon and in a scene where he was fantasising about being on a railway, they used some footage of a green Peak pulling some maroon Mk1s. It seemed a strange choice for a US show. If you want to watch it's S5 Ep 4.

Popular Post Halvarras
I don't seem to have posted any photos to this particular thread before, although one of these may have appeared elsewhere - anyway, I apologise for the poor quality of these Kodak Instamatic images but I hope their historical significance makes it worthwhile. It would appear that I have taken the only photos of a Peak in Cornwall in the 1960s. And only just, since the 1960s expired at midnight that day!! Class 46 D151 had been seen working the same train through Truro (dep. 1405) the previous day, as far as anyone knows the very first such visit, and the start of crew training on the type. Why it wasn't left until the New Year is anyone's guess. The local 'grapevine' lit up so I was ready for it as it headed west into that final '60s sunset. Being a sunny December day the steam heating boiler was unfortunately working rather too well. As you can see, it caused a little excitement on the end of Truro's Platform 2! Also some interest from the crew of Class 22 D6309 sitting in the yard opposite: This photo was so poor I didn't bothered trying to fix the damage when I had the opportunity (at the moment I can't) - D151 departing, forward motion has at least blown the steam out of the way!: I hung around the west end of Highertown Tunnel, near Penwithers Junction, to catch the return up working, a local (2B24 I think) due off Truro at 17.12. It was only while scanning this negative that it occurred to me that I shouldn't have been able to take such an image just after 5pm because it should have been dark! Investigation revealed something I had entirely forgotten about - during 1968-71 'daylight saving' was temporarily suspended as an experiment, in other words we didn't mess with the clocks! Even so the Insta coped pretty well with what must have been failing light by then.......pity I couldn't better contain my excitement at seeing a Peak in Cornwall though...... Crew training on this working continued fairly regularly into 1970, always Class 46 until 23rd April when the first Class 45, D127, was recorded. After about a week D151 was replaced by Leeds Holbeck's D167 (strange choice) - these two were blue, but those which followed were almost all still in green syp livery (to the point where it was a relief to see a blue one - when it finally happened it was D167 back again!!) and of these D155 seemed to be the one which appeared the most. Here it is exiting Highertown Tunnel on the down working on an unrecorded day in April 1970 - again, wish it was sharper: A bit fuzzy but, well, the title of this thread does say "photos and memories" so I've covered both......!

Ruston
I was just searching my shelves for something when I rediscovered a load of old pictures that I took in the last 2-3 years of the Peaks. There's an entire album of Class 45s that haven't seen the light of day for years so I found this thread and thought I'd post some. The quality isn't good but they bring back a lot of memories. 45052 on the 7M41 Dewsbury - Earles Cement, at HM, Nov. 87. The unofficial name has been painted out, but the Yorkshire rose and painted 41A plate remain, so this must have been the name Satan painted out and before the new name was applied. I can't remember what it was then named. Anyone know? 45033 Sirius on the 9J28 Healey Mills-Tinsley yard, Nov. 87. 45033 again, same year and month, same working, different day. 45106 Vulcan on a Poole-Newcastle train, at Derby. 24th October 1987. And again, same train but at Sheffield Midland. Above the Vulcan name it also had BABS painted on. I'll scan a few more if anyone's interested.

Ruston
A couple more. 45052 entering the engineer's sidings at HM and 97410 (ex 45029) on the down line, toward Horbury Station Junction. 17th Nov. 1987. ISTR that 10 Peaks were reinstated to traffic and given new numbers after being withdrawn, to work engineer's trains in connection with the electrification of the ECML and the line between Doncaster and Wakefield. Two days later and 97410 must have turned somewhere as it is heading toward HM, at Horbury, with a crane.
