Dave F's photos - ongoing - more added each day

This evening we visit the Great Eastern just east of Boreham where there is an overbridge which crosses both the railway and the A12, the road on the bridge comes off the B1137. Boreham is between Chelmsford and Hatfield Peverel.

I visited the location from time to time and never saw another photographer there. In fact I very rarely saw anyone else taking photos in the 70s and early 80s, even at preserved railways.

The line on the left in the first photo is the up goods loop which I had believe had a ground frame at New Hall.

As a child I used to look forward to our annual day trip to Clacton on a 309. The speed on a corridor train was exiting especially as my parents didn't drive so a lot of our travel was by bus.. They also made a real change from the trains that stopped at Brentwood. We would have to go to Shenfield to get on. A 312 to Colchester or Liverpool Street was also a rare treat. At the time I didn't like the 306s because you knew it was an 'all stations' to Liverpool Street. Edited by mullie

Another trip back in time this afternoon to look at the Worth Valley once again in its early years as a working preserved railway.

The people are as interesting as the trains!

photo C1812 of the 309s passing - interesting pic showing the use of destination boards on the bodyside

presumably useful if the train was split en-route

wonderful pics as always

I seem to remember the train splitting at Thorpe-Le-Soken with the shorter part going to Walton on the Naze and the rest going onto Clacton. We usually went to Clacton. Did these trains have a buffet car in the 70s?

These pics bought back so many memories, going to Clacton by train was something we always enjoyed because we didn't usually travel on corridor trains or go from Shenfield. For us, a family without a car Shenfield was more difficult to get to than Brentwood and trips to Chelmsford and beyond were something we did only once or twice a year.

I'm getting all nostalgic now, great photos as ever please keep 'em coming.

Photo C435; I wonder where this train originated, and where it was bound? It looks as though it's got a couple of lorry chassis/cabs (perhaps from Leyland, Bathgate?) and an odd selection of cars, perhaps warranty returns?

J8001;- I saw these a few times at Tyneside Central Freight Depot, with traffic to/from the Bank of England's regional office. On one occasion, we were taking some wagon photos there, when the foreman came up and told us to make ourselves scarce as the Bullion was due. On another, when I was looking after some offices overlooking the site, I saw one of the police cars, assigned to escort the load, follow the wagon from the reception sidings on the concrete road alongside the NCL warehouse. The driver was so intent on watching his charge that he forgot the hard left turn at the end of the building, carried straight on, and took the sump off on the first set of rails he hit.. I fear that some of the local police thought 'The Sweeney' was a training film, and drove accordingly.

They did have a Buffet car, which went on to Clacton, in the seventies.

Much fun was had by us commuters when people found that they were on the wrong portion, even after the guard went through the train announcing the split.

Hi, Dave. Great photo's of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, as well as Peascliffe Tunnel. Good nostalgic views of the ECML at Peascliffe Tunnel, with a very good variety of trains. Please keep the photo's coming.

All the best,

Market65.

David , great pictures of the new hall/boreham loop, it's ironic to think that it was lifted and yet now could well be the site for the new chelmsford area station and almost relaid , so to release pressure on the town's station and cater for an expansion in local housing.... Yes chelmsford is officially a city now but I can't get my head around that .

Fantastic pictures. Super for dating the signalling changes in the location. The MetVGRS searchlights have been replaced by multi aspect heads in the later shots.

Hi, Dave. Wonderful photo's of Norton Bridge this evening. The last one shows some passengers very eager to get off the class 304 EMU! Please keep the photo's coming.

All the best,

Market65.

Remembering the riding qualities of the AM4s, I think they were probably sea sick!

I hope one day to replicate in EM, that train in J8001. It would suit my small layout quite nicely. I've also got the TTG Class 47 and another Bullion car Kit to complete for the maroon version!

I have the Blue 31, I have one almost completed Comet Models MK1 Bullion Car and two unmade Comet MK1 underframes to be modified for the container carriers (they all had B7 bogies I believe) . I was going to make the containers from  plasticard. Not sure how I'm going to replicate the 'security' team' :triniti:

I've never seen this Bullion Train modelled (now there's a challenge...........)

Great pics Dave; there is still something nostalgic about the early '70s stuff, even to a hardened steam man like myself; possibly the remaining infrastructure that didn't really start to go till the mid 80s?

Hi, Dave. Excellent photo's of Manchester Victoria this evening. The first photo' is a great cab-end view of one of the class 124 Trans Pennine units. In the third photo' C615, there is one of those DMU substutions in the form of a class 108 DMBS standing in for a class 104 DMBS. Then in that last photo' a good 'end' view of one of the Inspection Saloons as modelled by Bachmann. Please keep the photo's coming.

All the best,

Hi, Dave. Good to see the photo's of Meadow Lane Crossing to Ratcliffe on Soar. I particularly like the 'trains in the landscape' effect in photo's C2872 at Trent Lock, July, 1976, and C2876, at River Trent, again July, 1976. Please keep the photo's coming.

All the best,

Smashing photos not an area I know much of so good to see them thank you, have you any GC photos of the southern area ie Woodford Halse?

I've just had a quick look in my indexes and there aren't any around Woodford Halse - it was a bit too far south. Loughborough (north of) was Dad's usual limit in the early 60s, by the time I moved south for a few years in the 70s the GC was closed.  I do have the odd one of Aylesbury and Quainton Road (preserved stuff) in the mid 70s.  In my black and white thread there are a few of Met stock near London and I think a few around Quorn all taken by Dad:

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/69274-dave-f-more-photos-added-21-june-from-1947-to-1955ish/

I'm not sure where they might be in the thread as they are no particular order - I just took them from Dad's albums.  Again it will be in single figures.

Sorry I cannot be more help.

David
