richard w
I've continued working on the station and have got it back on the layout. Getting everything sitting right wasn't easy and took quite a while, but I've managed to get the station sitting right on the platforms and town scene. All the lights are wired up and I'm very impressed with how well they have turned out. I also made some extra pieces of platform that run under the town scene to create the effect of the station continuing underground. This looks much better than the temp pieces of wall I used to have in their place. Some extra detail is still needed in places, but its mostly finished. Everything is still removable if needed but its not easy so hopefully this is the final time the platforms will come out. Really pleased with the below pics, its like my camera was sent back to 1989!

shaunthesheep277
That's it now, I think all your running session video's should be done like that in the future.

You'll need to rename the station to Cheese Central after that 'tune' though Cheers Dave

Phil R
Absolutely brilliant. About half way through I thought all this video needs is a Swallow liveried HST. Sure enough one appeared! Really captures the late 80s/early 90s. Very entertaining, the black cab at the start is genius.
richard w
Thanks for all the feedback guys. Started another project today. Bought 21 Hornby Railroad HAA hoppers. Great price at only £19 for 3 of them. They need a repaint and some extra detail so my desk will be like this for the next week or so.
Jaggzuk
Love the layout, love the topic and your Youtube Vids are great and informative. Your recent 80's BR vid was just superb!!! On the MGR project, I will be very interested in what you do with the Railroad version of the wagon, so any detailed how-to photos and text will be much appreciated. I think as a wagon they are pretty good for the price (cant' justify £23+ for the fine detailed version). I am slowly buying them to form a rake of about 20 or so. I have been getting the box of 3 for about £15 (new) at Shildon NRM and these are the ones with metal wheels too. One of the OPs from the Shildon MRC showed me how to make very realistic yet lightweight loads for the wagons and using pipe insulation and coal dust, here are my efforts: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/469/entry-13100-mgr-wagon-haa-making-coal-loads/ Looking forward to more progress. Removed a/c
Are they easy to disassemble? and will you be adding Kadees?

Only one thing I could see wrong, the ticket office was very unrealistic as all the windows appeared to be open...
lozstlouis
What power soldering iron are you using & not burn out the LEDs? Good work sir.
richard w
What power soldering iron are you using & not burn out the LEDs? Good work sir. I use 50W soldering iron. Trick is to use some flux to minimise the amount of time the iron has to contact the led.
richard w
I've finished working on the hoppers, took about 5 days off and on them to complete all 20. First thing I did was remove the rather under scale buffers using a dremel with a cutting disk. Then I drilled holes and glued in new buffers from Lanarkshire Models & Supplies. Then I cut away any excess plastic and fitted a Kadee to the lead wagon with nem pocket at the correct height. The rest of the wagons will be in a fixed rake so there is no need for them to uncouple. I decided to make my own couplings out of paper clips. Its a simple hoop and hook setup. The hoop is nice and small to stop the wagon moving about too much within the rake on gradients. Then its out to the shed for weathering. I've already repainted the frames railfreight red at this point. I removed the EW&S lettering with a fiberglass pencil. The hoppers were then dry brushed with weathering powder to give a dusty coal look. The underframes were painted with some sleeper grime mixed with black to create a dirty grey. At this point I put them back together and airbrushed each wagon with matt varnish mixed with a small amount of the dirty grey. The wagons were then left to dry. After this I added some extra bits of painted detail to the buffers and also painted the wheels. The coal loads are from Parkside Dundas with some peco fine grade coal glued on top. The end result is a much better looking wagon that close couples and goes round 2nd radius curves. I've left the 'steering' axles in at this point but will probably change that as some wagons try to go diagonally down straight track. I've also filmed the whole thing step by step which you can find below. Cheers
sub39h
Wow excellent stuff! I'm an eastern region modeller so these MGR wagons are a fairly essential part of my fleet but I've never much liked the look of them so I went for HEAs instead. Your conversion has really got me wanting a set now though!
hybridangel77
You done a good job on the wagons richard, it's amazing how different and realistic they look with just a few easy mods. Can i ask where you got them for that price as i fancy a few myself. Terry
cromptonnut
Hattons are showing a box of EWS 3 for £19, or 36 for £210. http://www.ehattons.com/51093/Hornby_R6606_Box_of_12_3_x_HAA_MGR_coal_wagons_Railroad_range_/StockDetail.aspx
richard w
Yep, got the hoppers and real coal from hattons. The rest of the stuff I got direct from the makers.

richard w
I've started giving the same treatment to my HEAs. More painting this time as I had far too many of them in BR Bauxite. The complete rake will be 20 wagons, 13 are now in railfreight and the other 7 remain in bauxite which seems about right for 1989. I've completed 12 and added real coal. Just waiting on some transfers to finish the repainted wagons.
