  1. Just to say a great big thanks to Andy for his continuing hard work to get RMWeb back up and running* - not the Bank Holiday weekend he would have wanted I’m sure. Darius * despite the “are we there yet” comments on FB.

  2. Yes, we have a major loading speed issue. This has been a problem after a system restart following a drive space upgrade. Server support has been very poor and being a bank holiday weekend it means there's limited support available from our own IT team. I'll keep at it.

  3. Greetings from Shrewsbury nick hospital where I hope that the escape tunnel will be in use either tomorrow or Monday. First of all, a tremendous thank you to everyone for the thoughts and good wishes that have been relayed to me by HH; ERs really is a superb, supportive forum populated by some of the best people that could be wished for and as well as being comforting it is more than a little humbling to be the recipient of so much goodwill. Secondly, thanks are also due for the uplifting news about the Tigers and for the many and varied suggestions for the organisation of an escape system as well as for arranging supplies, although I do suspect that if anyone sent cake it may not have got past Horton. I don't want to give a blow by blow account of the last week so I'll just settle for saying that the trouble was an unfortunate and untimely combination of contracting campylobacter, having a mini stroke and a resurgence of diverticula disease. Do I know how to arrange things or what? Anyway, providing the recovery continues I should be allowed to go home tomorrow or Monday and boy, am I looking forward to that! Then, apart from some double vision, which the consultant (and Andy P - thanks for the encouraging post Andy) says will eventually go away, as well as some follow-up assessment of the diverticula disease I should be OK - at least until the next bit of what was once a proud and fit body decides to pack up. Mind you, I suppose that had I treated said body a bit better over the years it may being somewhat better shape, but where's the fun in that? I mean to say, as Baz alluded to in his mention of the Heritage Park Hotel in the Rhondda all those years ago, you don't achieve notoriety on the exhibition circuit as the man who broke Owen Gibbon without some sacrifice (and it was good whisky Baz). As well as as being part of ERs I am extremely fortunate in having a lovely and hugely supportive wife who since I have been in the care of the NHS has been making drapes for the front of my layout - how good is that? And last but not least, of course, I'm lucky that I live where I can be looked after by the NHS which, despite all it's problems and shortcomings, still has some of the best front line staff anywhere to be found. So, thanks once again everyone for your support and I want to offer mine to Rick during his trouble as well as other ERs who are unwell or in need - I've only had time for a quick canter through the last week's posts and have probably missed some. Best wishes Dave

  6. Morning all, and Firstly a BIG THANKS to Andy Y for his dedicated work on restoring an almost normal Service. It is appreciated Andy. And on to more mundane matters, well not a lot to report, life has been fairly normal over this outage time, so have a good weekend one and all. Oh, and keep smiling.

  9. I had the camera out in the workshop yesterday and set up this picture of the lockdown PO train. They still need couplings (and weathering and removable loads) but I've decided a batch of couplings can wait for those long winter evenings in the front room. Building a complete train does take a bit of determination but is very gratifying when it reaches this stage and, for a large project like Bath, is a sensible way to go. I shall continue the policy, I have two or three options in mind for a winter project. Jerry

  10. As previously mentioned, some shots of Retford's fiddle yards. These were taken in 2015, and more roads might have been added since then............... The GN fiddle yard with the RH trains ready for heading south. As trains leave, they traverse a wide-radius 180 degree curve to enter the scenic section at Babworth. The GN fiddle yard with the RH trains ready to head north. To the right can be seen the GC curve from Whisker Hill allowing eastbound trains to enter the station. The GC fiddle yard with the RH trains ready for heading east. They have two ways of getting on to the scenic section; either use the Whisker Hill curve to gain access to the station, or take the shorter route directly over the flat crossing. The junction for this is off to the left. Note the GN main line to the right. The GC fiddle yard with the RH trains ready to head westwards, either to take the straight route over the crossing or use the junction (which is on the scenic section) to enter the station. Note the GN main line climbing over the GC fiddle yard, on quite a steep gradient approaching it. The GC fiddle yard also dips down in an astonishing piece of model railway engineering. The baseboard edge and electrical connections (seen through the 'hole in the sky' - to the right - in earlier pictures) are on the bridge section. A wide-angle view should make it all clearer. This is incredible, this is heroic. I'd even go so far as to say it required the work of a genius to conceive it, start it and work on it. Its completion will be the most-fitting tribute! Do you see now why I think Retford will be the 'greatest model railway ever'?

  11. Back from a round of golf during which I three putted nine times, including missing one from little more than one foot. In the end I finished up laughing at it, there seemed nothing else to do, really, Here is a picture of A2/3 Sun Castle bringing in the stock for the 1130 to Edinburgh. That worked very fast.

  13. Good afternoon all, It looks like someone broke RMweb again – it was out practically all day yesterday. And whilst I don’t live on the forum, I do dip into it now and again during the day (a bit like dipping into a choice box of assorted handmade pralines and without the risk of coming across items that have already been “hippo tested“), so its absence was very notable. I am a concerned about GWiwer’s, situation I’m hoping that what I am going to post is completely and utterly wrong, as it’s very difficult to assess this sort of thing just from what GWiwer had posted, but it does appear to me that Mrs G’s behaviour is starting to move away from an anxiety which although severe is within normal limits, to something that may require outside, professional, help. My understanding is that there are a number of telephone helpline is available in the UK where people can talk things through with well-trained individuals who can help them - at least initially. Getting help for these sorts of situations will, at the very least, help bring peace of mind to all involved. I do hope it all works out for them both. Unfortunately, people’s anxieties - both great and small – are not helped at all by the chaotic and frequently hysterical tone of communications about the pandemic by the government and especially by the media. Speaking of overreactions, I see that Britain has removed air-bridge status from Switzerland. So anyone travelling from Switzerland to the UK (or back from Switzerland to the UK) now has to quarantine for 14 days. Funnily enough, here in Switzerland, whilst there is concern about the rising numbers of infections in certain areas of the country, neither the Swiss media nor the government are proclaiming the coming of a Second Zombie Apocalypse! Given that Switzerland is now in purdah, I think it was rather prescient of me to move my planned September 2020 trip to London to May of next year. When I may, or may not, be able to travel to London. Had I been stranded by events, I would have had to have thrown myself on the mercies of ER for accommodation and regular supplies of ale, pork pies, whisky, steak and kidney puddings and cake (preferably not already HH tested). As things stand, in exile I may have to throw myself on the mercies of ER for postal supplies of pork pies and (tinned) steak and kidney puddings. Until the CARE parcel arrives (hint, hint) I will just have to content myself with a virtual tin of steak pudding from my “alternative” pantry.... All this talk of foodstuffs reminds me of DH’s predicament. Firstly, I hope that he is steadily improving and secondly, if needed, we could get him transferred to my Swiss Clinic: The Baselklinik für Modelleisenbahnerheilung for intensive treatment with Schwarzwalderkirschtorte and schnapps, administered by attractive “Swiss Misses” If there is a small crumb of comfort in all this, it’s that DH’s liquid diet is probably better than the hospital food! Stay safe, stay well, stay sane... iD

  19. Morning Afternoon awl. First of all, best wishes to Dave Hunt and my hopes for a speedy release and recovery. Thoughts too with Rick. It can't be an easy situation, particularly when you feel there is little you can do to change things for the better. In my current role, I speak to lots of people from across the company. As part of the Return To Workplace project team I always take the opportunity to ask how people feel about coming back into the office. Views range from "I'm not leaving my home until the virus is eradicated from the face of the earth" to people like me who jump at the chance for any trip to the office and the chance to interact with real live human beings. As someone who deliberately and voluntarily put themselves in harm's way over the years, I appreciate I'm at the extreme end of the spectrum and that there's still a lot of anxiety around. So apologies for being MIA over the last few weeks but my life has been pretty much all about RTW. I've been into the office three times this week to check up on the Covid secure measures being implemented. What we have is without doubt, gold standard stuff and I know I'll be safer there than anywhere outside my own home. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about the external environment. I took a trip into the town centre this week and was not at all surprised by what I saw. The Mall (aka The Arndale) has a one-way system in place and a requirement to wear masks even when not in the shops. The one-way was almost completely ignored and mask wearing was barely 30% and that included shop assistants. As for repurposed office blocks, Luton has far too many of those; marketed as "luxury studio flats" (a euphemism for bedsits). A large number have been bought up by London councils who use them to re-house people from their own boroughs, with all the social problems that brings. One particularly prominent office block always seems to have a police car parked outside. The first load of washing has been done. A muggertea, or maybe a muggercoffee up next has now been consumed with a bacon, egg and mushroom sandwich. (Post composed before server outage, hence the crossings out). Regards to awl.

Greetings all from a grey Sidcup- good to read of positive progress for Dave and thoughts with Rick and with Chrisf. today is relatively quiet- we’ve been for our walk (including Hurst Road - see above) and I will be cooking a Mexican chilii chicken with red pepper and chilli salsa later while Mrs Lurker takes Elder Lurker to pick up some prescription sunglasses- presumably the final nail in the coffin of the summer! like Phil, our central heating kicked in this morning which did at least mean most of the washing from yesterday dried! tomorrow we’re at Brands Hatch and will be wearing layers! I think it will be quite chilly in the wind. have a good day all

  21. It is nice to have RMweb back in action for the first time in nearly 36 hours here. I see that many of you have managed to get in long before me so things are obviously changing all the time. My thanks to Andy and all those who have worked to get the site working again. I was sent an advert recently for an upgrade to my broadband which looked like a good offer so I called them today only to be told that the offer is not available in my area! So given that I have had an account for over five years they must have known that they could not supply what was being offered when they sent the email. False advertising comes to mind or just plain incompetence, at the moment I am not sure which. What I do know is that if a better deal comes along from another provider I will be jumping ship.

  22. I have the same strange feelings; after I had moved to Sidcup, my Mum happened to unearth her father’s apprenticeship papers; home address, Hurst Road, Sidcup. The house he had lived in with his parents is part the expansion of Sidcup in the 20’s and 30’s, and is still there, albeit clearly extended. For those that know the style of house it was one of the Chalet style semis. He’d grown up earlier in his life in Catford and apparently used to say he was educated at Sandhurst and Cambridge. Sandhurst was the primary school that was bombed while children were in the playground during the war but we don’t know what he meant by Cambridge. by the time the war came, he’d married and lived in Grove Park, a house I remember my Grandma living in (he died when I was 2 and so I don’t remember him).

  23. I am pleased to announce that Rumney Models will reopen to orders on the 1st September 2020. There will be a few minor changes to how things were done before. Please make note of the following points of information: Lead times from my etchers have increased since the beginning of the year and given this I will no longer be taking payment for any items that I do not have in stock. I am happy to take orders for items that are not in stock, but payment will not be asked for until I actually have them. This however excludes those items listed on the special etches catalogue and I may ask for a deposit for large orders. To this end… All orders by email first. Please email any order for confirmation even if you intend on paying by cheque. I don’t want to have to sort out postal orders which include payment for items I don’t have. Postage and packing rates. For the rest of the year (2020) I will not be charge postage and packing on orders over £20. For orders of £20 and under P&P will be £1.50. postage and packing rates will be reviewed in the new year. I am planning on placing orders with my etchers on the following dates over the next six months. 1st October, 1st December, 1st February. Please bear this in mind. Opening hours: Rumney Models is a part time busines, “office hours” are currently Tuesday (half day), Thursday (half day), Friday (all day) and Saturday (all day). Please do not expect a response to orders or enquiries outside of those times. I’ve really enjoyed actually having time in the evenings to myself rather than spending it answering emails/orders and I’m not going to start doing it again. Cheques. I find it amazing the number of cheques that are made out in a way that I cannot cash despite it being clear on my ordering page and order form who they should be made out to. It’s a pain to sort out and something I feel I shouldn’t have to do. All cheques should be made payable to “Justin Newitt”. Please allow 28 days for delivery. Turnaround should be much quicker but note that I will only be going to the post office once or twice a week (most likely Tuesday and/or Thursday) which will cause a lag depending on when an order is placed. Also anything arriving by post will be quarantined for 3 days before opening and I will wait for cheques to clear (typically 2 days) before sending an order out. I can use my smartphone app to bank cheques but if the app doesn’t like the cheque (it happens occasionally) and I have to take it into a branch then that will create further delays. If Covid rears its ugly head either locally, or heaven forbid in my daughter’s nursery or in the home this could cause delays of up to 2 weeks, not to mention any localised disruption to the postal system. In short please be patient, I am a one man band with a young family not Amazon prime! Happy modelling all. Justin

  25. More shillings in the meter please... Mooring awl, though I'm not sure you'll read this, this is my 3rd attempt at posting, the site seems unstable. One boat capping fitted then on to the barbeque.. Yesterday's bbq initial work went well, the extra serving areas by the barbeque were fitted with 2x4 beams as supports running from the BBQ to the side of the muddling shed and thecshelves fitted on top. Two drain pipes were fitted as extra support pillars to the MhRC eaves extension, there are more to be fitted. At that point I stopped for a short break, during which SWMBO turned up with a Muggacoffee.. This lead to further discussions on the layout of the area.. 2.5 hours later.... The other end of the raised patio had been redesigned, there will be a bar!! A small shed will be moved, to give storage for patio furniture and will provide the back drop for the bar, but it's low enough, to see the garden over from the raised patio. Various bits of walling, and an another aluminium shelf for the bar will link it all together bringing continuity to the design. I gave up any attempt of continue working on the area for the day and took Ben for a walk. In the evening, emails from the MRC, it's now been fitted with sanitizer etc, the cub will be restarting with groups of six per evening, all mask wearing, all social distanced . No use of the tea bar, The social distancing makes no difference on the normal Friday meeting anyway, as we're are all scattered down the club house working on different layouts . The Tuesday meeting is the big difference when 30 used to turn up.. I've had around 5 hours sleep, more shortly, its windy out there gusting 40mph. Plans for today, The forecast is rain so boat work seems likely, the cockpit combing fillet on the starboard side will be fitted, then returning to the the port side, the combing capping and fillet will have the last small piece fitted and the rest will be sanded. If the forecast rain has ceased, then back to the BBQ and prettying up of the area will commence with tiling the wall parts of the area facing the BBQ itself and that facing the serving shelf. Time for more sleep.

  27. Nothing too sexy this week I’m afraid. It’s all been trolley constructing & cutting plywood sheet to fit on top of them. However it’s possible to see the triangular landscaping taking shape, with much of the polystyrene landscaping on top. And the course of the river is easy to see as it bends sharply towards the camera. Just a huge amount of fettling heights & lengths of aluminium and plywood. Finally the first batch of lighting gantry rig bases have been delivered. These bases will be situated at the operating side of the layout and 7ft high vertical booms will slot into them which in turn support 7ft wide horizontal booms into which lightweight LED batten lights slot. So the lighting will be from above, and in front of the layout. I want to finish the whole layout in one month so have got this triangle to complete, the scenery for it, the extended river pour and the 4 tracks round to the fiddle yard. Then there’s the backscene to bring round and the foam board tunnels (which hide all track heading towards the scenic side).

  28. Even in rural Dorset we had this problem. Southampton Council had bought up a number of houses on a new development on the edge of town. Typical new estate with no facilities. So what to you expect to happen when you take a single-parent family away from any support network that they have and move them to a completely unfamiliar location 50 miles away with no facilities? Poor mums pushing prams for over a mile as the bus service that was a planning condition for the 700 home (later extended to 900) has never been provided.

You'd have thought that with the forum down for nearly 24 hours I'd have got quite a lot done. You'd have thought wrong. Apart from a brief shopping trip to Sainsbury's nottalot happened yesterday. However I did manage to finish off updating my cataloging of small things with wheels, that only took about an hour. I appear to have a lot more than I thought, too much in fact! Is that possible? This morning I will be visiting The Shed and then from about 2.30 I'll be watching rugby, Sale v Bristol today and that could be a good match. Have a good one and keep safe, Bob.

  33. Greetings one and all Today the hiraeth is on full power and I wish I were 160 miles away. Were it not for that ruddy virus and all the disruption that it has caused, I would be heading for Cardiff to march in the parade at Pride Cymru with about 15,000 other like-minded souls. How I miss the atmosphere! Spectators line the pavements up to five deep and many of them cheer. It’s terrific, even when the temperature is 33 degrees and there is no shade. Cardiff is at the upper limit of how far I am prepared to drive out and back in one day. Fortunately there is a frequent train service between Cardiff Queen Street, the nearest station to the assembly point, and Cogan, where I park and don or doff my rainbow boots. Last year my journey back to Cogan was in a Pacer whose flanges squealed all the way. One must take the rough with the rough. Meanwhile, back in the all too real world, my Christmas and New Year holiday has taken a step nearer to cancellation with the inclusion of Switzerland in the quarantine list. Things can change in three and a half months but I have no cause for optimism. So I get to save four thousand pounds. Big deal. I would rather have the holiday. Best wishes to all Chris

  34. Well there went a day and a half - thanks to Andy forgetting things back, presumably they use the same providers that the isle of Man Telecom do as we had an almost total island-wide interweb blackout this week. (Shh - Nokia). My thoughts stray to Rick, a difficult situation and my fervent wishes that matters resolve well, and to Dave's health - good news there at least. Boring here really, a day spent painting the outside of the garage and house window lintels today, a lot of masonry paint spread about. The house it white spar dashed so needs no effort but the built-later garage has to 'approximately match' in planning, so is painted render as white spar was soooo expensive. Thus every five years or so needs painting, a tiresome task. Tomorrow we're gardening the 'public open space' in the circle we live in, as the commissioners (council) will only pay to mow the grass, and the flaxes and shrubs get a bit wild, so a few neighbours have a field day on them occasionally. Planners again - we have to have these shrubbery things, but no-one will then take responsibility to maintain them. I also made some coal loads for,er, those 16 tonner things.

Fine - no state benefits and no state pension. Let's see how strong their principles are now...... p.s. Dave's back In other news: Refurb of Bear's kitchen continues. Whacking plaster off the walls is pretty much completed - today saw the plaster around the kitchen door frame (on the front room - sorry, lounge side) of the wall removed. There's a few cracks that need correcting so it makes sense to sort both sides at once. Only Bear should've moved everything under the sun upstairs, but didn't . And plaster dust gets effin' EVERYWHERE. Bear will be very busy bunny tomorrow cleaning up the lounge Turdycurses

  38. I must have hit lucky and have replied 3 times in the afore mentioned 36 hours. It's still very windy here and we've had had intermittent rain drizzle rain drizzle dry rain drizzle The port corner fillet was fitted to the cockpit combing, then the starboard side was sanded. Thence to the BBQ area, an aerated block was adjusted... Mallet and chisel... Around 50, 6 inch white tiles were cleaned, many of them had been sitting in the "might be useful" pile for thirty years since I redecorated the bath room in our previous house. They still had some of the plaster that came off with them. The tiles were laid out along with blue glass small tiles, trying for a good fit and pattern. This was during a dry spell, I managed to fix on the tiles around the BBQ shelf itself. Then the heavens opened big time and everything thing got too wet to continue. So after an eyelid inspection in the mobile home, when it stopped I returned to the marquee, and fitted the port side capping. After a wash and brush up, I'm now on the sofa, dinner is imminent, however it was slightly delayed by one of the "rings" failing. Since it's an all in one, glass topped, hob, I guess its time to start looking for a replacement, it's about 15 years old. Dinner will be accompanied by a glass of red..

  39. RMweb being down yesterday meant I had no choice but to pull my finger out and get something else done I was concerned the brown was too light After painting the ‘metal’ parts black I used a black wash to highlight the gaps and darken up the brown. I also tried to simulate wood grain using the wash with a very fine brush, unfortunately the black paint made the rivet details disappeared So I used a white weathering power all over which highlighted the details and softened the whole thing What do you think?

  43. Afternoon all, It sounds like it's been a rough week for quite a few. I've not been able to look in for quite a few days, things haven't been too good here either, though not as bad as some of the other ERs - hope things get better asap for you all. It sure feels like autumn. I went out for a couple of hours in the garden and it was definitely woolly hat time. And digging felt like someone had been making industrial quantities of lumpy brown porridge and then tipping it all over the soil. Not really surprising, given the chuckitdarns Friday, sometimes the rain was drumming on our home-office's dormer so loudly it was interfering with phone calls. The forecast is better (for us) over the next few days, though tomorrow will still be a fleece and woolly hat for gardening. I'm trying to finish some work in time to get the autumn seeds in, ready for next year. Oh, and not have the place looking like a builder's yard. With a little luck, that's the last of the urgent/essential work to do round the house. Hopefully I might even ... get chance to do some modelling. One very overdue project is the plan for the next few days. I'm just praying I don't have any more crises dropped in my lap. I don't want to be greedy about such things, it might be my turn for one occasionally but I don't want more than my share. Fingers crossed.

Every time I've tried to get in over the past 30 odd hours the door has been firmly off the menu so it seems restoration or occasional access in teh meanwhile must have been a rather patchy, strange how this new(?) technology stuff does and doesn't work and amazing how carp service providers manage to stay in business. In some respects I don't blame Rick's wife Sharon for being distrustful of the outside world when you see the selfish behaviour of far too many people out there to whom social distancing and masks seem to be something to be ignored rather than used. but if she does build it up into a sort of phobia then she really needs professional help and I hope she will consider something. But in some respects she isn't alone, today the lad and a couple of pals have made their way to Lewes for a hydraulic experience (of the beer consumption kind, not the diseasal version) and when he gets home he will be stripped at the back door so his clothes go straight into the washing machine and he will be marched off for a shower. sensible precaution at the best of times but as there is some sort of demo on there it becomes nearer an essential than precaution if the people taking part in that are in anything at all like the usual recent mode of anti-social misbehaviour at such events. anyway back to the excitement of RMweb for a while and roast chicken for dinner tonight Enjoy the rest of your day.

  45. Afternoon All Glad to be back and running now, and with my Broadband currerntly running at about 15Mb/s and the new computer, it seems that things technology wise are looking up. However, my BB supplier has offered fibre for the same price, and I have taken up the offer, as they are offering around 36Mb/s which seems to be a decent offer. It will mean a new router again, but as this one, which I only had installed a few days ago, had dropped out a few times, and has needed the traditional switch it on and off solution to reboot it. 30747's niece came with us to Kendal this morning, and seemed to enjoy herself, so we dropped her in Lancaster so she could see how many closed down shops she can spot (which is loads with a couple more due to close next month, and both independents) - the latest is Argos, which closed for the pandemic, and had posters in the window saying it was closed temporarily, and which now has the windows blanked out and a sign saying this branch is now closed. Generic greetings, and best wishes to RIck (again) for Sharon. Got to go and pick up the wanderer now from Lancaster then some dinner. Regards to All Stewart

  47. I'll post a photo from the archive as some kind of uploading test as we appear to have problems that Andy Y is on to. Here is the ever popular filthy mogul.

  48. Morning All Site is up but very slow and flaky - had to consider doing some modelling instead of reading about it - hopefully it will get back to normal soon - I know Andy has been working hard to try to get things back quickly, and when all's said and done, it is not really down to him as he's in the hands of others who are letting him down. 30747'a niece arrived on time from Scotland, and Lily is beside herself with joy. Back sometime soon. Regards to ALl Stewart

  49. Not only RMW but the Hornby forum was , and still is, off! So I checked out FB as I never had before. Hornby and RMW will be enough for me, as there is a life after all! Brian.

  50. Nicely put, Darius. I find there are very few days in the year when I envy Andy his job. He seems forever to be firefighting, either with us lot or the tech, or on the really bad days, both! EDIT - Things seem to be speeding up a bit now. Here's hoping.
