Getting close to wildlife - literally

Has anyone encountered anything more exotic than a few birds and the odd native mammal?

Would this do?

Having a pond in our back garden means we are a constant target for herons. Thankfully we are pretty bulletproof in protecting the fish, but that doesn't stop them trying. This one was on top of our neighbours roof for around 20 minutes this morning trying to work out how he could get his breakfast....

Eventually he won the 'staring out' game, so I opened the window and off he went. Just a shame he went away from the camera....

No doubt he or one of his mates will be back for another try...

I haven't hit a deer while driving, but that isn't for lack of trying (on their part). We did nerf one with the rally car I was codriving, but there was no damage on either side. The closest I came while driving was abut 2 ft, braking hard as deer #1 ran across in front of me followed by looking in the mirror to see deer #2 run across behind me.

On the way back from the cottage last weekend I pulled over to move a turtle out of the road. Fortunately it was just a small painted turtle rather than a snapper - they can get quite aggressive if they've been sunning themselves all day (guess how I know that...).

had the misfortune to smack one full on whilst co driving on the cheviots in the eightys made a right mess of the front of our sd1 as we were flat in fifth at the time !

did get some nice stakes of the sqaudies who helped us get going again after spinning off in shock

This fella was wandering through the fields and got to the fence, I was on the other side of the railway, he hadn't noticed me, he glanced away and I grabbed my camera and took this when he looked back !

A male roe deer I think.

He was off, with a final indignant glare

Talk about being in the right place at the right time. that is a VERY good capture and bit deserves a prize for a non related photo.

These little fellows at Sumburgh Head the other day.

About 15' from the ones in the first shot and about 10' from the second. When we walked down from the lighthouse there was one standing on a wall and JZjr got within about 3' to get a picture.

Not sure if this counts but this was as close as I could get with the zoom on the camera I was using at the time...

I caught this chap in the middle of executing his latest cunning plan.

I think this goes a long way to explaining the distinct lack of wildlife in my garden, except slugs of course!
