  1. Say no to cruelty to dragons!

St Edmund is the real patron saint of England, English King and martyred on English soil.

Plus the story of the wolf guarding St Edmund's severed 'ead is far more plausible than saving a princess from a huge fire breathing flying lizard which had the dexterity to tie the princess to the tree.   And where did it get the rope, B&Q or Screwfix?

"the item you are attempting to glue will always stick to your finger before it sticks instead of sticking to the surface you are trying to attach it to."

      Fixed it for you.

  7. Is painting rails even more tedious than ballasting?

Yes, I would say it definitely is!

Try steel rails, leave them out for the winter and they'll become authentically rusty without any effort at all!

I've got no real problem with either painting the rails or ballasting as it's satisfying when it comes together. I can understand if there's yards and yards (or metres and metres) to do - but even then broken up into small chunks, it's doable.

However, I find rails more difficult as these new-fangled acrylic paints don't adhere too well onto the sides unlike enamels. Seems to be a factory finish coating on the track.

      Cheers,

      Philip

And when I looked in the fridge, I had no eggs!

So when I popped down to the shops, I also got half a dozen extra large, free range eggs and I'll have a hardboiled egg in my lunchtime sandwich!

Ever since it was published, I've regarded Night Watch as my birthday book. I'm reading it today.  😀

  13. Gapping copperclad sleepers, more tedious than ballasting

    1. Hroth

      Hroth

Are you gapping before laying, or after?  I found that "before" was slightly less tedious than "after"...

    2. Dagworth

      Dagworth

This is on points that have been laid. I should have done them on the bench in hindsight

Only ten points (plus some half points that cross board joints) and a double slip on this board!

      cravensdmufan

Yes I still use red and black wire for my feeds - and yellow for the polarity switching for "common frog" feeds to the Peco SL-E's!  Actually doing mine right now as part of layout rebuilding!

    3. Dungrange

      Dungrange

@Hroth said "Red and Black date back to the pre-1977 mains cable colours, you really should start thinking in terms of Brown and Blue"

... but Blue doesn't rhyme with track!!!  That's why it's still Red and Black to the track. 😀

A local hardward store sells them - I ended up buying a load for a few pence for just that reason!

  20. On target to finish all scenic track laying on Ipswich by New Year. One point left to build.

    1. Dagworth

      Dagworth

Still waiting on a delivery of chairs for some pot sleepers. If I hit my goal then all track will have been built and laid in one year.

  21. Double slips. Pain in the neck to build but really satisfying when they're done

    1. AndrueC

      AndrueC

I have both a curved double slip and a double slip with crossing on my layout:

      https://photos.app.goo.gl/FneMJhKfqQuoBUx19

The crossing was the most tricky. It's named after my late father because he liked crossings :)

  22. Board 12 of the new layout hereafter known as Eurovision... Nil Point.

  23. Lays road surface across level crossing... realises *just* in time that he's forgotten to gap the copperclad sleepers under the road surface before the glue sets!
